As we previously reported, Apple's new MacBook Pro lineup is launching
as early as next week. Today, we have all the details on the new
notebooks and this looks to be a minor refresh with faster processors
and more storage (for some models). The prices will be the same as the
current model's prices.

New 13-inch MacBook Pros:

- 2.4 GHz dual-core processor, 4 GB of RAM, 500 GB hard drive, SD card
slot
- 2.8 GHz dual-core processor, 4 GB of RAM, 750 GB hard drive, SD card
slot
New 15-inch MacBook Pro:

- 2.2 GHz quad-core processor, 4 GB of RAM, 500 GB hard drive, SD card
slot
- 2.4 GHz quad-core processor, 4 GB of RAM, 750 GB hard drive, SD card
slot
New 17-inch MacBook Pro:

- 2.4 GHz quad-core processor, 4GB, 750 GB hard drive, SD card slot,
Express Card slot
Built-to-order configurations:

- 15-inch: 2.5 GHz, 4 GB of RAM, 750 GB hard drive (faster 7200 RPM)
- 17-inch: 2.5 GHz, 4 GB of RAM, 750 GB hard drive (faster 7200 RPM)
Current MacBook Pros specs for comparison are after the break. As
always, Mr. X!

Not sure, it may not be Lion but requires an Intel Chip. I'm running
Leopard on a G4. They are in a private school which uses exclusively
Macs and the school tries to do a lot of homework on custom software
through their portal. I know they have problems a lot of time
accessing the software and running it.

Using Two Firewire 800 WD Studio LX External Drives on one Macbook P

Posted by: "Nick Andriash" Nickster248@telus.net   andriash2005

I have bought a 2nd WD Studio LX external drive, and I would like to use the Firewire 800 connections if possible, but using them in parallel appears out of the question unless one can purchase some kind of Firewire 800 splitter to use off my Macbook Pro. Hooking them up in series seems the only alternative, however I am worried if doing so will damage any of the two drives, or my MB Pro.

Is it possible to hook them in series, or do I have to resort to a USB connection for my 2nd drive?

Howdy.

You can daisy chain FireWire drives with no problems. FireWire is
intended for exactly that. In addition, it won't slow down like USB
devices do on the same USB bus.

You can also buy a FireWire hub. These are not as plentiful as USB
hubs. Sonnet Technologies makes one called the Yin Yang. Check OWC
for this at <http://eshop.macsales.com/search/firewire+hub>

Note that if you connect a FW 800 device at the end of a FW chain and
the next device is a FW 400 device, the FW 800 device will still
perform at FW 400 data transfer speed. It will have it's speed reduced
by the FW device between it and the FW 800 port on the Mac.

If you connect a FW 400 device at the end of a FW chain and the next
device is a FW 800, then the FW 400 will still move data at 400 speed
but the first device in the chain, the FW 800 device, can still move
data to the FW 800 port on the Mac at 800 speed.

We are also now seeing the first Thunderbolt hub devices. I recently
came across one that connected to the Mac via Thunderbolt and had USB,
FW, eSATA, and HDMI on the hub end. I have tried to find this link
again but now can't. I thought I mentioned it in this group in a post
but have searched and can't find that either!

Firewire was DESIGNED to be used in series.

One caution: if you have a FW 400 and a FW 800 drive, connect the 800 to the computer, and the 400 to the 800.

"desktop" drives) have 2 FW ports for this very reason.

Oh yes, if you're using a combination of 800 and 400 drives, make sure
the 800 drives are first in the chain so they run at 800. If you
connect FW 400 drives first with 800 drives at the end of the chain, the
FW 800 drives will only communicate at 400 speed.

Daisy chaining is precisely how you DO connect FireWire. That is why
most of them have two connections on the back.

Otto, I have two portable drives 1T drives that daisy-chain 800 FW. They are made by OWC and are called "mercury on the go" and can be ordered with FW and if so, they come with two 800 ports and one USB. You can also use an aux power source, but it is not required and does not come with the units. I use five HDD's and one Drobo with four HDD's installed, now I have two small non powered HDD's to use remotely and bring back to the daisy-chain. So far, everything is working well.

Really like the OWC portable FW drives!

Howdy.

I don't know what a TB port would be.

Recently I came across a Thunderbolt converter/adapter device that was
on the market.

It did Thunderbolt to the Mac and then the box had USB, FireWire,
eSATA, HDMI, and Thunderbolt.

I thought I posted a mention of this in this group but now I can't find
the post and I can't remember the name of the device.

Thanks for those links Dan. Very informative.

So, unlike USB, T-Bolt is implemented by -- currently -- Apple and
Intel. Thats why there's such a dearth of options right now. To quote
from the first link:
"
At this point LightPeak and ThunderBolt are largely in Intel and
Apple's direct control. There aren't multiple T-Bolt chipset
manufacturers shipping ThunderBolt-compatible chips in broad
distribution, so expect a slow (and perhaps painful) road to a truly
thriving market of Thunder-Bolt peripherals and accessories from a
wide variety of vendors.

Howdy.

I understand that the introduction of a Thunderbolt device or devices
on the market may be held back due to license complexity due to
involvement of both Apple and Intel and others in the protocol.

The term "Lightpeak" was the original term and this was supposed to be
a technology that used fiber optic cable. However, the issue was being
able to provide power via the fiber optic and this turned out to be a
problem that they couldn't solve. However, Lightpeak development is
still ongoing and we may see a consumer oriented fiber optic cable
system at some point in the future that can also conduct power -
perhaps with a copper add-on next to the fiber optic.

Hence the current "Thunderbolt" term. But Thunderbolt is also based on
copper cable and not on fiber optic.

The other issue causing delay in introduction, as I understand it, is
that the connector ends of a Thunderbolt cable are more complex and
thus more difficult to manufacture and thus more expensive. The
connector ends have chips that have a lot to do with the speed of the
data transfer.

USB is not an Apple developed protocol but it needs to be noted that
the first computer with USB ports was made by Apple.

USB has some serious problems with speed. I've done some testing of
data transfers on my MacPro between different drives using USB,
FireWire, internal SATA to SATA, and eSATA and without a single doubt
USB 2 is significantly slower than FW 400 even though USB 2.0 is rated
as officially faster.

Lagos, Nigeria is one popular place for old trashed Tv's and
computers.

As long as the export goal is "recycling," U.S. shippers can
legally send e-waste wherever they wish.

Supposedly they are donated - but about 75% of
them do not work. They are usually burned or dumped in swamps.

See an African swamp full of computers. Lovely!

Multiple reports and speculation and rumors today that Apple may be
building a commercial TV set.

No one really knows about this who can comment but it is assumed by
many of the writers that the TV would combine Internet, DVD/BluRay,

I believe it, the Apple TV takes control each time there is an update. I always have to reprogram my universal remote. I have thought that was because apple was going to come out with a compatible tv.

Grrr I am sick of this rumor - there is a new "Apple TV" (like the current
one, likely with A5 processor for gaming, etc) that was confirmed because
the Gold Masters of all iOS 5 firmware references AppleTV,3,1 and the
current is 2,1.

The new rumors are because there is a quote in the biography from Steve
(paraphrased) "I have cracked the code for the HDTV / user interface" it
does not mean there is an actual TV...

Howdy.

Sorry to bore folks outside of the US with this info but it is
interesting.

This is a side-by-side comparison of 3 identical iPhone 4S phones doing
several different speed tests on 3 different cell networks.

Verizon was faster at download small chunks of data like a web page.

ATT was faster at download larger chunks of data like an app or a
video.

Sprint was abysmally slow at everything.
