I Will Miss You, Steve

Posted: 24 Oct 2011 06:18 PM PDT

The death of Steve Jobs has been affecting me much more than I anticipated. Just like every one else, I knew Steve’s days were counted. Yet, I didn’t really prepare myself.

Instead, I did what I sometimes do to unconsciously protect myself. I put my feelings aside and kept ignoring emotions as though they didn’t exist.

When the news broke, I was terribly shocked, but not surprised. At the time, I was very sad but I think I didn’t process the information right away. Again, I think my brain blocked my feelings to protect me.

As I watched Apple’s celebration of Steve Jobs’ in Cupertino yesterday, I couldn’t help but feel immensely sad, my eyes filling with tears, a few of them would eventually fall on my face.

How did I get there? How can I be so affected by the death of a man whom I had never met? A man that, mind you, I had very much disliked for many years.

Yes, for the longest time, I wasn’t a big fan of Steve Jobs’. While I respected the work he had been doing, I really disliked the human being. Steve Jobs was a real asshole. A dictator. A selfish, and egocentric man, with little regard for the feelings of others.

I remember reading about Steve Jobs’ return at Apple several years ago. The article told the story of how cutting the company’s philanthropic program was one of the first thing he did upon his return, in 1997. As an avid Windows user at the time, and someone with great respect for Bill Gates’ charity involvement, I thought Steve Jobs was just what I always thought he was: a big asshole…(...)

Apple TV Software 4.4.2 Now Available for Download

Posted: 24 Oct 2011 04:30 PM PDT

The Cupertino company has had a rough time sorting out its Apple TV updates over the past few weeks. It seems that all the trouble started when Scott Forstall’s team released iOS 5 to the public earlier this month.

Last week Apple released a software update for its media hub (4.4.1), but it was immediately pulled due to customer complaints. Apparently re-releasing it still didn’t do the trick, because tonight Apple seeded 4.4.2 to Apple TV owners…(...)

How the iPhone’s Camera Has Improved Over the Years

Posted: 24 Oct 2011 02:30 PM PDT

The iPhone 4S’ all-new 8MP camera is one of the handset’s standout features. Other than Siri, the improved camera is likely the biggest motivator for folks to upgrade to Apple’s latest smartphone.

But iPhones haven’t always sported class-leading camera hardware — it’s come a long way in 4 years. Gizmodo demonstrates this with a side-by-side comparison of photos taken with each of the 5 iPhone models…(...)

How to Add Up to 11 Lines of Text to Notification Center

Posted: 24 Oct 2011 01:30 PM PDT

Notification Center is far and away one of the top features of the new iOS 5, but it’s not without its opportunities for improvement.

Case in point, you can only see four lines of text maximum on any of the messages that are queued up in Notification Center. There’s no way to customize the length of the messages that are displayed.

There’s also the annoying matter of having to tap twice to clear out any messages. NotificationCenter Enhancer seeks to address these issues…(...)

China Mobile Has 10 Million Unofficial iPhone Users

Posted: 24 Oct 2011 12:15 PM PDT

Despite the fact that China Mobile doesn’t have an agreement with Apple to sell the iPhone, its network counts 10 million iPhones users, as the company reported this morning via Reuters.

With 630 million customers, those 10 million iPhone users are just a drop in the bucket. But they do tell a lot about how much China wants the iPhone…(...)

Posted: 24 Oct 2011 10:40 AM PDT

The built in dictionary is probably one of my favorite new features in iOS 5. It’s so incredibly handy, and it can be used across any app at any time.

Wouldn’t it be nice if you could search Google in the same way? Well now you can, thanks to DictGoogle — a new tweak that integrates seamlessly with iOS 5′s built in dictionary…(...)
