Temiskaming Shores, Canada - When Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty suggested last September that the time had come for electorate to engage in meaningful debate on the issue of handheld media devices in the province's classrooms, the backlash was swift. The public wanted nothing of it. Those darn things will be nothing but a distraction to the already over-stimulated and disengaged youth of today, the detractors said. Next issue, please.

But with the sudden emergence and breakaway success of tablet computers, namely Apple's iPad, some educational experts believe it may be time for the public to reconsider McGuinty's comments.

It's what happens when phones become computers and computers become more mobile. The lines blur.

Tablets aren't phones, but they certainly can be used as communications devices for instant messaging, which is one of the most disconcerting points in terms of educational application for most Ontarians.

"Here is a device that has tremendously useful properties as an educational tool," says Dave Brown, an Ontario teacher who also heads Interactive Elementary, a company that builds educational applications for the iPad. "It can be your textbook, word processor, calendar, whatever. Really it can be a zillion things, but no one will be focusing on all of the potential ways in which students can use tablets until we address the misguided perception that these devices are nothing more than toys."

Brown believes his company's first release, Middle School Math, is helping change the way educators and parents think about the application of mobile technology in the classroom. Emphasizing game-playing and skill development, the app debuted on Apple's' App Store in June with activities based on basic algebra, data management, and coordinate geometry. The app is being utilized by students in twenty countries, and yesterday the company released its second major update in two months.

"Give a tablet to your two-year old and have her do a puzzle. You might experience a paradigm shift."

With several schools south of the border experimenting with tablet computers and other hand-held media devices, the debate as to whether mobile devices have a place in the Ontario classroom is certain to find its way back on the radar before long.

In fact, the tablet may be the example McGuinty wished he had a year ago when an overwhelming majority of his electorate found his suggestions ludicrous.

"Over time, student use of mobile devices will gain acceptance in Canada," argues Brown. "But the bigger question is who is responsible for purchasing the hardware and, by extension, who is given the reigns for controlling the software. That's really the issue school boards will be wrestling with over the next decade."

This is no small point. If the freedom for students to bring their own mobile devices to school is not the most pressing issue in terms of how school boards manage technology today, it is certainly the most contentious.

Brown sees both sides of debate, but points out the need for cash-strapped schools to look at utilizing the tools that their students already possess.

"I think the vast majority of the public, and for that matter the vast majority of the educational establishment, would be very resistant to giving children the freedom to bring their own devices into the schoolroom. Long term, though, I think society has been headed in this direction for a while, and I see it as an inevitable conclusion."

"It sounds cliche, but we can't keep doing things the way were doing them thirty years ago. The world is a rapidly changing place and we need to examine ways in which our institutions can respond to these changes without putting on our collective earmuffs. I'm not preaching an overhaul. I'm suggesting adaptations."

Societal trends aside, the concerns of detractors are abundant.

For many of the province's teachers, the fundamental issue is how the software is controlled. On board-owned laptops and desktop computers, students have very few opportunities to use technology inappropriately as they are not given the power to install programs. Administrators have this power, and instant messaging programs usually don't make the cut. So when students start bringing mobile devices into school from home, the fear is that control is lost. Hence the policy of the majority of the province's schools: Leave your personal devices at home.

David Ashby, a Dallas-based educational technologist and a proponent of Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policies, urges detractors to consider their concerns within a historical context.

"When students only used paper and pencil how did you know if they were using it to pass notes or to take notes? It should be no different than before the students used the devices. The main question is this, is the student on task? "

According to Ashby, fairness is another big sticking point for those hesitant to embrace a BYOB culture. If schools aren't supplying the hardware, some fear a two-tiered system is created where some have tools others simply can't afford.

"BYOD is not about everyone doing the same thing in the same way. It allows for individuals to use the tools and techniques that are at their disposal, but if you do need everyone to have a device, it is much easier for the campus to provide 5-10 devices for students who do not have their own, rather than the district or campus to have to supply all 25-30."

When asked how a teacher should respond when a student's device chimes from a notification or even rings, Ashby is straightforward.

"Has your phone ever gone off in a professional development meeting? We as adults are just a guilty. Do what you can to communicate the expectation of silencing all devices. However, be patient and forgiving. You've probably forgotten a time or two also."

Upon leaving any set location or arriving at another, Therelam automatically posts news of the change of location to Facebook or Twitter.

Frankfurt, Germany - Greenstones today is pleased to introduce ThereIam 1.0 for iPhone 3GS/4/4S, their new Social Networking app that allows users to post custom messages to Facebook or Twitter automatically whenever they change location. The geosocial app lets users set a red pushpin in a street level Google Map, each pin indicating a frequently visited location, such as home, work, or gym. Upon leaving any set location or arriving at another, Therelam automatically posts news of the change of location to Facebook or Twitter. The app continuously tracks location using very little battery power, and messages can be sent even if the app is not running.

Therelam includes several features that make its use simple and convenient. First, users can set up dozens of red pushpin locations all over a city or all over the world. Second, each pushpin defines not only a specific location, but also a user-set zone surrounding it. This zone is called an Area, and each New Area can be adjusted to include a circle with a diameter of between 300 and 5,000 meters (.19 and 3.1 miles). The larger the Area the lower the sensitivity of the app to changes in location, and the less likely it is to interpret location changes incorrectly.

The third innovative feature included in Therelam is the ability to independently control each Area, turning it On or Off in the app. Fourth, users can create custom messages that are posted on entering or leaving an Area. For example, a user might create the following message when they enter the zone near their workplace, "I'll be at work soon. See you then!" On leaving the zone, a different message is posted, "I'm leaving work now. I should be back home in 30 minutes." Each Area can have its own entering and leaving message, and each message can be set to post to Twitter, Facebook, or both.

Fifth, Therelam includes a Messages page that displays a log of all the messages the app has automatically posted. Each entry indicates the time sent, the message posted, and the name of the Area that triggered the message. Finally, the app does not disclose the user's exact location or coordinates. That information remains private - only the user's comings and goings, to and from specific Areas, are made public.

With a total of 40 tricky puzzles, TryAngulate challenges players to place the triangle-shaped pieces onto the blank board so the color of each edge matches all of the edges it touches. The game is also available as a free version called TryAngulate Lite with 8 puzzles.

Valencia, California - Rovinware today introduces its first app for iPhone, TryAngulate, a new game designed for challenge-seeking puzzle lovers where players arrange triangular pieces on a game board to match the colored edges.

With a total of 40 tricky puzzles, TryAngulate challenges players to place the triangle-shaped pieces onto the blank board so the color of each edge matches all of the edges it touches. Pieces can be moved and rearranged, but cannot be rotated or flipped. The round is successfully solved when all of the pieces are on the board and arranged perfectly, matching each colored edge.

"The more you play TryAngulate, the more delightfully complex the puzzles get," said John Quigley, Founder of Rovinware. "You'll need your very best puzzle-solving skills to discover the correct pattern to them all!"

In addition to the full version, the game is available as a free version called TryAngulate Lite with 8 puzzles. TryAngulate Lite allows players to try the game before upgrading to access all the levels.

TryAngulate started as a board game over 10 years ago. John Quigley, inventor of the game, even created a wood prototype of TryAngulate but could not find an outlet for getting it mass produced and sold by the major board game publishers. Quigley considered translating his idea into a software game but, at the time, it was difficult for individual programmers to reach large audiences with their software.

The internet revolution and Apple's invention of the iPhone and App Store opened up new possibilities for inventors and small businesses. Last year, a friend introduced Quigley to iPhone development tools and he began converting the board game into the new mobile app TryAngulate.

"Modern technology has provided marketplaces never before available for creative projects," said Quigley. "It is great that TryAngulate is selling and providing some income, but it was more important to me to just finally get it out there and that people enjoy playing it."

The TryAngulate app features 2 levels and 40 total puzzles, giving players hours of puzzling entertainment. Each level has the same triangular pieces but a different game board, making each puzzle fresh and interesting. Successfully solving at least 16 out of the 20 puzzles in Level 1 will unlock Level 2, with 20 additional puzzles.

When they start, players see just a blank game board and the possible pieces. They choose a piece and drag it into position on the board. If they change their mind, players can move the piece off the board or to an open space.

Pieces have three colors on the edges. The goal is to match the edge's color with the colors of all other edges it touches, which could be 1, 2 or even 3 colors to match. The puzzle is solved when all pieces are on the board and all the colored edges match.

To help with the puzzle solving, users are given up to 3 hints per puzzle (40 hints per level).

Top Camera description:
An excellent HDR (High Dynamic Range) feature, Video recording in HD, an artistic Slow Shutter Mode with Light Trail effects, and the use of Folders for file management make it unique among camera apps. Additional features include: 4 Picture Quality settings, Burst Mode, 4 Camera Timer settings, Virtual Horizon, Exposure Box, Focus Box, Geotagging, picture alignment Grid, White Balance, Stabilizer, and Digital Zoom. Top Camera also supports operation in both portrait and landscape orientations, includes iTunes File Sharing, and saves images to its internal Gallery, the iOS Photo Library, or both.

Top Camera incorporates a highly sophisticated, user-selectable focus zone feature, as well as user-selectable exposure zone. This means that iPhone photographers can optimize focus for any part of the photo, and set the exposure by locating that zone that produces the best results. Users just drag the purple box on the screen to the area they would like to have in the sharpest focus. Then they grab the green box and move it around in the frame to find the optimal exposure setting for the scene.

Top Camera's advanced HDR capabilities extend this feature to a range of iOS devices (any device with a built-in camera), overcoming Apple's limited support for only iPhone 4. According to Apple, "Now you can take great photos that capture a wider range of light intensity using the new high dynamic range (HDR) setting. After selecting HDR, just point a device at your subject and shoot. iPhone/iPad automatically captures three photos of the scene - each with different exposure levels. Then it layers the shots together to create a single photo that combines the best elements of each shot and more accurately represents the wide range of light in the scene. Both the regular shot and the HDR photo appear in the Camera Roll."

The app also incorporates a new Slow Shutter Mode that brings the compact iPhone even closer to the capabilities of a DSLR camera. Set to Automatic, Slow Shutter Mode produces a blur around moving objects, while maintaining a perfect exposure. Set to Manual, it allows shooting in extremely low light without a flash. And using the Light Trail setting produces pictures where moving lights, such as cars at night, produce time-lapse, trails of light.

General:
The app was designed in cooperation with Artist / Photographer David Scott Leibowitz to incorporate the highest quality in every detail. An extraordinary amount of time was spent designing the interface, to make it as beautiful and intuitive as possible:

Photo Gallery:
Clicking the picture icon in the lower left corner brings the user into the world of Folders, Viewing, Editing, and Sharing. Entering this function of the app, photographers can see the contents of selected folder. Selecting an image in the Main folder reveals a pop-up window with options to view, edit, change folder, export, delete, or email the image:

* Folders - organize photos into folders. Create new folders, delete, reorder, export, change names, and move photos from one folder to another
* Export - paste image to clipboard, export to photos or send by e-mail
* Share - send one or more images to Facebook, Twitter, Dropbox, YouTube or Flicker
* Add new photos - import from the Photo Library, paste from the clipboard or duplicate a selected image
* Select mode - Switching to select mode allows the user to quickly select many images, and then delete them, change folder, send by e-mail, share on Facebook/Twitter/YouTube/Dropbox/Flickr, export to the Photo Library and copy to clipboard

Viewer:
Tapping the View button, or double tapping on a thumbnail will bring up the folder's images for fullscreen viewing and also give users info options to see the photo's metadata including a GPS map view. Clicking the action icon in the top right corner displays a pop-up with e-mail/edit/change folder/export buttons:

* Slideshow display
* Display image info and metadata
* Display GPS location in Maps

Photo Editor:
Tap on the Edit button to open the app's powerful photo editor. Here, users can crop an image, fix common photo problems like bad lighting, low contrast, or fuzzy colors, and apply special effects, or add a frame. Users not pleased with the results can easily revert to the original image:

* Crop - free mode, keep ratio, square, 2x3, 3x4, 9x16, golden proportions
* Rotate - rotate 90 degrees left/right, flip horizontal/vertical
* Adjust - use sliders to adjust brightness, contrast, saturation, improve (definition, sharpen), color temperature, tint, shadows, and highlights

The throttle increases and decreases easily by sliding horizontally, as simply as increasing the volume on your speakers. It is part of a revamp of the user interface panel which gives users easier access to Dolly Drive's breadth of functions including backup, disaster recovery and soon to be available online storage.

Cube Cat Games today introduces Sidera 1.0 for iOS, their upcoming touch arcade Game where players are a supernova and must destroy all the stars and planets on the screen. The planets and stars do not move, though the star field background does. By touching it the player destroys a star or planet, but the explosion alters the supernova's position. Careful planning is required, because only stars and planets that are in direct horizontal or vertical alignment with the supernova can be destroyed.

Montevideo, Uruguay - Cube Cat Games today is pleased to introduce Sidera 1.0 for iOS, their upcoming touch arcade Game where players are a supernova, and they must destroy all the stars and planets on the screen. The planets and stars do not move, though the star field behind them does. By touching it, the player destroys the star or planet, but the explosion pushes the supernova backward, changing its position. Careful planning is required, because only stars and planets that are in direct horizontal or vertical alignment with the supernova can be destroyed.

Sidera (Latin for star) is played in portrait orientation and includes 80 levels. The object of the game is to remove all the stars and planets from the screen, after which the player's supernova explodes, clearing the level. The supernova is a half-inch wide animated particle, colored yellow and orange. There are three other stellar objects of the same size, each with a different animated pattern and a different color. Lastly, are the icons for small planets that look something like a revolving bull's-eye.

Touching one of the stars or planets surrounding the supernova will cause it to explode, forcing the supernova backwards in the opposite direction. However, if the object is not directly in a line, horizontally or vertically, with the supernova, it will not explode. Instead, a white crosshair reticule will appear, briefly indicating those bodies that are in a horizontal or vertical line with the supernova. With the supernova's current position, only those bodies close to these targeting lines can be destroyed.

Players must evaluate the screen to determine which bodies can be destroyed and which to destroy first. Successful players will develop strategies for anticipating one or more moves ahead in helping them choose the best planet or star to destroy. This can become quite complex, as at higher levels there may be dozens of planets and stars that must be cleared.

It lets Lets 9- to 13-year olds create their own funny zombie comics. Players "mix" cartoon panels to create their own zombie stories, the way a deejay mixes tracks to make a new song. The dozens of panels are designed to work together in endless combinations. The stories can be funny, action-packed, scary, or totally wacky.

New York, New York - The new iPad app Comixer Zombies - Comics Mixer allows storytellers young and old to weave their own undead-themed comics. To celebrate its release, the app is on sale in the App Store for $0.99. Comixer Zombies was created by three former Nickelodeon Magazine editors and cartoonist Travis Nichols, author of The Monster Doodle Book from Perigee Trade. The app is a game, a puzzle, and a creative tool all in one.

The developer, Comixer LLC, previously released Comixer - The Comics Mixer, where players could mix pre-drawn panels to create a wacky medieval tale.

With the new Comixer Zombies, players "mix" cartoon panels to create their own zombie stories, the way a deejay mixes tracks to make a new song. The dozens of panels are designed to work together in endless combinations. Players control the fate of a young couple in the zombie-infested woods, and of the world itself. The stories can be funny, action-packed, scary, or totally wacky.

Graphic novel author Travis Nichols drew the panels, but how the story unfolds is completely up to the user--there are no right or wrong combinations. For kids, Comixer encourages creativity and reinforces literacy skills.

Players build a library of their macabre masterpieces and then can read their comics in a digital comic book. They can also email their favorite undead stories or share them on Facebook.

Chris Duffy, who wrote the panels for Comixer Zombies, says, "Zombies want to eat us. Humans don't want to be eaten. Therein lies the conflict that Comixer players can resolve any way they want."

Artist Travis Nichols, who drew the panels, says, "I have never drawn so many popped-out eyeballs. In other words, this was the most life-affirming and fulfilling thing I have ever done." Nichols adds nervously, "Please promise that you won't hesitate to destroy my brain if I turn."

Comixer Zombies - Comics Mixer is the brainchild of three former editors from Nickelodeon Magazine. When the magazine folded, freshly unemployed editors Chris Duffy, Laura Galen, and Carmen Morais committed to bringing their expertise in entertaining and educating kids to the iPad. Their love of humor, comics, and puzzles led them to the idea of creating a Comics Mixer, where kids can create their own stories.

Cartoonist Travis Nichols is the creator of The Monster Doodle Book, as well as Punk Rock Etiquette. His comics have appeared in Nickelodeon Magazine and Herbivore.
