Thanks. I didn't realise there were any bus-powered external drives
supporting daisy-chaining.

Does anyone have/know of "desktop" (3.5", AC powered) drives that do not?

buy now or wait

Hi all.
I'm in need to buy a new Mac to tackle Autodesk Maya because my Mac
Book Pro simply can't handle it anymore.
I'm looking at the Mac Pro and am planning on buying an nVidia Quadro 4000 card as the Radeon card currently in it has been shown to be less than adequate for tackling Maya Fluids, DMM and PhysX tasks.
My question is...what would I gain by waiting till after the first of the year after the new models with Thunderbolt are released versus buying now?
Are we looking at significant processing speed increases over the present technology? or isn't it worth it?

Opinions welcome.

Thanks.

Simple answer for me. If the refresh is as close as 6 months away or
less, I wait. Lately, Apple has been releasing new models with
increased cpu speed, ram speed and such. Have you looked at the iMac
line as opposed to the Power Mac? They're pretty powerful now, all with
quad-core processors.

Howdy.

All things being equal you would gain speed by waiting. The current
MacPro uses an Intel Xeon server class processor.

If you do look into a current MacPro, check out the hexacore unit.
I've seen some very strong speed tests of it even compared to the dual
8s.

However, there are a number of rumors floating around about the form
factor of a new MacPro: narrower? shorter? Some rumors that say there
might not be a new MacPro because the i5 and i7 processors have been
pretty fast.

I recently saw a Thunderbolt card cage which means the card cage could
have a PCIe video card like the one you mention to run a monitor on an
iMac.

Personally I think there will be a new MacPro tower. In fact, I'm
waiting to buy it. The pent up demand will be high.

Today's rumor, which you allude to, is that there are problems with the
new Intel chips and the MacPro will be delayed until 2012.

maybe the Model T wasn't made from hemp, but many, many, many things were, including clothing, newspapers (trees don't have to die), medicines, the list is
nearly endless. it was outlawed due to greed i.e. william hearst, among others.
the history is very illuminating.
the social conditioning that followed the banning of use of hem is also illuminating.

Moderators, are you reading this? This is a MAC list, not a list to
debate the legalization of marijuana, regardless of which side you
are on.

This is a followup to my earlier query to say that the password request no longer pops up. I took a hint from another discussion that mentioned an association with a video viewer program. I did not have the particular application on my machine but I did have something similar (I've already forgotten the name). Tossing this unused application in the trash seems to have solved the problem.

I thought I might get rid of it by installing a new copy of Safari but the popup persists. In fact if I open Chrome in front of Safari the popup is still on top. Since I cannot attach an image to this message, let me try to type in what it says, minus the diacritical marks.

Password management

Posted by: "Darrell McDonald" fussyoldfart@gmail.com   fussyoldfart

Mon Oct 24, 2011 7:16 pm (PDT)

My little adventure with a password request that popped up when I launched Safari, has me thinking that I need a proper password manager. This becomes particularly evident when I realize that all my email is now available on my new iPad which is shared by family members and frequently handed to visitors to play with.

As a requirement I want an app that works both on my iPad and my iMac and will sync one with the other.

A second requirement or strong preference is that the app be free or low priced.

It should also be easy to use and not require any sort of dongle or device beyond my own ability to remember one master PW.

I have, of course been browsing the net and I realize there are many password vaults/wallets/boxes and most of them will also generate "strong" PWs but my initial search did not turn up an app that meets both requirements.

I know many members of this forum have experience to share and apps to recommend. I look forward to your advice and to a lively discussion :-)

Hi Darrell,
LastPass (http://lastpass.com/) fulfils all your requirements. It does
however store all your passwords (albeit in encrypted form) in a
password vault in "The Cloud". Whether you trust this depends on how
much you trust 256-bit AES encryption. Personally I'm happy with it
and it syncs my iPad and Mac passwords perfectly.

Ian

It is not the Airport card that requires a password. It is more than
likely trying to connect to a router that has WPA, WPA2, or WEP
protection set up. Those require a password before they can be
connected to.

Do you have a wireless router? Check the settings and protection on it.
