I have the new iPhone 4s. It is in fact my very first iPhone. I feel right at home because I have had an iPod Touch for years as well as an iPad 1 for what seems like forever but is more like 17 months.

The iPhone 4s is great. The Siri free service is by far the best feature. It is a nice looking phone.

I had an Android phone for over a year and there are some pros and cons to switching to the iPhone.

Pros

- Smaller

- Email handling is much better; replying or forwarding allows text selection and editing; formatting.

- Siri

- More Accessories choices

- More apps

- FaceTime

- Better Notifications

Cons

- Heavier

- More fragile; glass on all sides

- No removable battery

- No removable memory

- Built-in GPS not as good

- Can't dial a person from SMS app after reading a text

- Lost fancy camera tricks

- More steps to toggle wifi and Bluetooth on and off

Things that remained the Same

- Battery still an issue as I am a heavy user

- Flash for camera

On the surface the above lists would appear to make my decision a bad one as the Cons seem to out weigh the Pros. I am extremely happy with the choice.

Siri makes managing my day and communicating a breeze. It is like Apple took the Zen that Palm OS had and made it easier through the old technology of speech.

Still missing from iOS

Apple needs to make it more convenient to toggle wifi and Bluetooth; use notification area and Siri to toggle.

Apple should add the ability to have different signatures for the multiple email accounts. We do we have to have our business signature on our personal accounts and vice versa?

Accessories that have to complete my setup:

The LG HBS-700 Bluetooth headset is awesome! If you have ever wanted to free yourself from tangles wires, this is the way to go. Of you are like me, you hate the traditional Bluetooth ear pieces. With the LG HBS-700 Bluetooth headset, you have a light weight device that rest on your next like a necklace. It include normal ear buds that dangle or magnetically attach to the device until needed. This thing works great with my iPhone, iPad and iMac.

The Mophie battery case extends my iPhone's battery by at least 7 hours plus it protects the phone during and drops.

I also have a belt case that can hold the iPhone while in the Mophie case.

Thanks,

Carl W. Brooks

You can actually dial a person's number after reading an SMS.
Just tap the status bar on the tap and it'll scroll to the top. Choose either Call or Contact Info.

And I agree that Apple should add the ability to have different signatures for the multiple email accounts. In fact, right now, I have to edit my signature.

I'd argue that point. Two screws removable with a special screwdriver, but one available cheaply on line, slide the back up, unplug the old battery, plug in the new, put it back together - done! It is almost as easy as changing any battery where you have to unscrew a screw holding the battery cover.

I actually had 2 backup batteries for the Samsung Epic. The Mophie case last longer than the 2 Epic batteries, so I am good - plus I don't have to remove anything.

The Mophie makes it a bit bigger but I love it. I tries hard to emulate the look of the iPhone. The volume buttons are a little hard to get to but not a showstopper.

The Epic's back was easily pried off with a finger nail. Carrying a screwdriver around and fiddling with cable inside an iPhone is not practical for me, let alone a non-techie or non-tinkerer.

Plus your solution would most likely void your warranty even if someone was willing to do so or had a clue where to get an extra battery from.

Replacing the battery on the iPhone 4s shouldnt void warranty.
I have yet to take one apart but on the 4 there are no seals or markings to indicate it was ever apart should one want to put in a different battery.

It is an Apple Store process, you have to have the miro-pentalobe
screwdriver to remove to the two back case screws and the battery connector,
I believe, does have a "Void Warranty" label on the connector but if you
need to replace the battery yourself you are likely out of warranty anyway
as if it quit working during warranty they would replace it.

There are more and more independent "Apple Device" repair stores, I know
there are 3 local to me that do the repairs at about 1/3-1/2 the cost of an
Apple Store.

settings>add account>gmail> then just give it a different name but use the same log in as your first account. Then you can add a different signature. When you send email just use the account that has the signature you want.

Does having more than one signature only work on the 4S? If not I must be
dense because I can only see where to put one signature. I have a GMail and
a work email and would love to have separate signatures.

Not sure what Paul is referring to, I don't see this on the iPhone 4s. The signature is outside of any particular email account in the settings app.

Jim,

The Google GPS app is incredible useful, but I found a decent free app
called Waze GPS & traffic - Social,
fun!<http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/click?id=0vIGoTZF8Uw&subid=&offerid=146261.1&type=10&tmpid=3909&RD_PARM1=http%3A%2F%2Fitunes.apple.com%2Fus%2Fapp%2Fwaze-gps-traffic-social-fun%21%2Fid323229106%3Fmt%3D8%2526uo%3D4>
that
works for now. I mainly like turn-by-turn with voice prompts so I don't
have to look at the screen all the time. I also like the 3D view instead of
a overhead view. So this con was helped with software from the Appstore.

The built-in camera app had lots of things like Panorama, "Add to it" and
many filters. I have a couple of FREE apps that do most of the tricks, but
not all. There may be a paid app that do them all, but I like free better.

Again none of my cons were show stoppers just slight irritations until
alternatives are found.

Thanks,

Carl W. Brooks

Apple engineers contact iPhone 4S user to diagnose battery issues

Sent to you by Bill Boulware via Google Reader: Apple engineers contact
iPhone 4S user to diagnose battery issues via 9to5Mac by Jordan Kahn on
10/28/11

Apple engineers are in the process of contacting iPhone 4S owners in
order to determine the cause of alleged battery life issues. One iPhone
owner told the Guardian that Apple engineers "installed a monitoring
program" on his iPhone to diagnose the source of the problem:

"I then got a call from a senior [Apple] engineer who said he had read
my post and was 'reaching out' to users for data and admitted this was
an issue (and that they aren't close to finding a fix!) and asked lots
of questions about my usage and then asked if he could install the file
below and that he would call back the day after to retrieve the info. I
extracted the file from my Mac after a sync and emailed it to him. He
was incredibly helpful and apologetic in the typical Apple way!"

The unnamed iPhone user was apparently expericing a "10% drop in
standby every hour", he turned off location services and Siri in an
attempt to troubleshoot which new features exclusive to the iPhone 4S
might be causing the battery loss to no avail. We first reported about
users complaining about the iPhone 4S's battery draining unexplainably
fast a couple weeks ago. The issue seems to only be affecting a small
number of users, although the Apple discussion boards are still full of
people experiencing similar problems. If this account with an Apple
engineer is to be believed, it looks like Apple is at least
acknowledging the issue even if they "aren't close to finding a fix".
We'll keep you posted as we learn more.

My battery life is fine. About the same as I remember my 3GS being
and about the same as my EVO.

I have never really got more than 1 day with "MY" use from any phone I
have had, Treo, BB, Palm Pre, EVO, Instinct or couple versions of the iPhones.

With a lot of use, I had to charge as soon as I get home but no different than
any phone I mentioned above.

Same here, I am getting same USE battery life that I did with 4 which was
quoted during announcement. They did say the Standby time was reduced to
200 hours from 300 but didn't list a reason. It is assumed this is iCloud
constant syncing, PhotoStream, etc.

I would speculate that the people experiencing battery drain restored from
older phone backups, use Exchange account(s) with Push enabled (ActiveSync
is a HUGE battery drain - when I am trying to run battery down I change my
Exchange from Fetch to Push), and/or use Find Friends and other Apps that
heavily use GPS.

I know that during the beta process, using my Mophie Juice Pack on iPhone 4
with WiFi on would drain the JP because it was constantly looking for iTunes
to "WiFi Sync" with - they fixed this around Beta 3 or 4.

Safari - Keeping Logged In

I have a 3GS, and upgraded to OS5 a few days after it came out.

Since then, I have had trouble on Safari "holding" my logged-in website information. For example, I was posting on a message board earlier today, and put my phone down. I came back about ten minutes later to finish my comments, and had been logged out from the website.

This happens on more than one board, and is irregular. When I go out of Safari, 99% of the time I just hit the Home button (sometimes a double-tap to go to another app, but it's rare). The phone may snooze for a bit, but I've not done anything to log-off or even close the window.

Anyone have a suggestion? Has anyone else noticed this?

Funny message

Hello

I´ve just restored my iphone old firmware and got a message:

"Congratulations..your phone has been unlocked..." and it asked me to register it.

My iphone is factory unlocked since I bought it..so why is that message? Does anyone know?

I´ve been reinstalling the firmware many times and never got that.

Has somebody received this message after a phone restore?

Funny isn´t it?

Rod

As mentioned title above, can Siri work stand alone or with Wifi connection without dataplan?
