That's good. I assume this means that all audio streamers/players are now
likely to support it alongside FLAC and the rest.

Hmmmm! I am going through the same process with the new iMac that I just bought. Even my files are locked until I tell the computer to unlock them.

Howdy.

Jeannie, I read your question and read the responses. There's no
enough information here for anyone to be able to help with a good
answer.

The password issue happens for a variety of reasons but always
connected to something called "permissions." These are not the "disk
permissions" that you see as part of the Repair Disk Permissions in
Disk Utility.

Each file, each folder, has a set of permissions. The basic ones are
READ and WRITE permissions for a file/folder. But there are also
restricted permissions like READ ONLY.

It is possible that files that you moved from one computer to a new one
or to Lion may have a different set of permissions. Or, perhaps the
user account name is different.

These permissions will vary depending on where a file/folder/icon is
located on the hard drive.

If files are just transferred from computer A to computer B, and do not
end up in the correct folder, this can cause permission problems and
the system will ask for a password to do some things.

If you try to create a new folder in the wrong location, you may also
be asked for a password.

These permissions can be changed.

The way to change permissions in Finder is to select a file then do a
Get Info command. In the Get Info dialog box, at the bottom, is a
section called "Sharing & Permissions."

It will say:

"You can read and write" (and then there is a table with two columns
named Name and Privilege.

There are usually 3 items under Name and to the right under Privilege
you see the corresponding access right or permission level.

If the file you did Get Info for is IN your own User Account and if you
are logged in as this same user, then the name column will say (I'm
using my own user account short name for this since I don't know yours
or your daughter's):

Name Privilege
- - - - - - - - - - - -
dan (Me) Read & Write
staff Read only
everyone Read only

To the left of the word "Read" under Privilege is a little up/down
arrow.

You can change permissions using this little up/down arrow. Click it
to see the choices.

Before making a change, you will very likely need to "authenticate"
(really means to unlock this capability) by clicking the gold padlock
and typing in your (or your daughter's) user account admin password.

You can change the permission. Also look at the Gear icon at bottom of
Get Info for more permission options.

Permissions Trick!

If you first select a folder with several files in it - just one click
on the folder - then do a Get Info command there is a time saving trick
for permissions.

You can change permissions for the folder and then using the Gear icon
you can make the permission change filter down to all the files in that
folder. Big time saver. The command on the Gear popup menu is "Apply
to enclosed items." You won't see "Apple to enclosed items" when you
do Get Info on a single file only but only for a folder.

Thank You , Dan, and everyone. I am going to forward this on to my
daughter. I was just helping here yesterday with her new mac Book pro, and
I set up a folder into which I could put everything from her external drive
, so that we could format that external drive to a Mac file system. Until
she brings the computer back, I can't do anything, But aI think that after
my photoshoot tomorrow, and after I ahve processed those shots, i may
finally install Lion to my Mac Pro..

There are multiple places you could attempt to create a file or folder. By
default, this will be within Home* (Macintosh HD > Users > HerUser), but it
could be anywhere else under Macintosh HD. Have a look at Macintosh HD on
your own Mac using Finder in column mode and you should see what I mean.

*This is shown with a "house" icon in Finder.

Synchronization problem between Iphone & Macbook Pro

Posted by: "Bill Morton" billmorton999@gmail.com   redpup99

I have an Iphone 3 running 4.2.1, and a new Macbook Pro running
10.7.2 Lion. When I
plug the Iphone into the computer, it says "Syncing with Iphone" or words
to that effect,
but it doesn't even try to synch either calendar items, or address book
items. What am
I doing wrong?

This phone was 'paired' to an Apple G5 before I got the Macbook.
Do I need to do something to "unpair" it from the old machine and "pair" it
to the new one?

Thanks in advance!

How get apps

I'm trying to get a free program that will allow me to view vob files.
I found MPlayerX, but can't figure out how to get it. It first asked
for a program to open the app store. I chose iTunes, but when I click
to view it in iTunes, iTunes opens, but I don't see anything about the
program. I tried to download it from other sites, but it always takes
me back to the same page where it asks me about a program to open the
app store. Frustrating being run around in circles. Can anyone tell me
how to get this program or if they know of another that is free and will
allow for reading vob files, I am open.

The name of the program that accesses the Mac App Store is "App Store", and it should be located in your Applications folder, if you are running either Lion or an up-to-date version of Snow Leopard.

Using Win Outlook with iCloud

Posted by: "Harry Flaxman" harry.flaxman@comcast.net   hflaxman001

Sun Oct 30, 2011 1:52 pm (PDT)

I've been having an issue sending email through iCloud using Win Outlook. I
haven't used any other client to try to send from @me.com, so I don't know
if this is specific to the client or not.

I keep on getting prompted for a password for the SMTP server, my iCloud
password is apparently rejected. I don't know what's causing this, but it's
a pain in the butt. There isn't even a specification to 'not bother me
again', so it's a recurring nightmare.

iCloud for Windows is pretty specific about creating the IMAP account under
Outlook, so I assumed there would be no issues. Hah! I should have known
better as it's running under a M$ mess!

Has anyone else experienced this? I know, I know, we don't handle Windows
here, nor should we, I'm just interested in anyone that might have had the
same experience.

TIA

Harry

Yes, I know. My own photos, taken with a digital camera, are displayed with correct metadata in Photo. The problem arises when photos from the Internet are imported into iPhoto.

Therefore I am amazed that this is not working in iPhoto (I'm having the latest version which Apple calls 11 but for some strange reason is in fact only v. 9.2).

Well, I just chose randomly a picture from flickr.com

http://www.flickr.com/photos/houseofduke/2899726968/sizes/o/in/photostream/

and imported it directly into iPhoto. As you can see here no metadata were imported, everything is blank.

So it's the same old story then. Denver Dan mentioned already the scandal with comments in System 7. I think they fixed that in System 8.1 if I remember right.

> handled things differently by allowing you to write to an actual EXIF

Do you have any idea why they didn't do it?

> That's ok

Well, I think it is a major catastrophe. This means I cannot import thousands and thousands of photos I already have in Finder into iPhoto. I would loose invaluable information such as where I got the pictures from in the first place. Such info is of vital importance for me as a freelance author. Am I allowed to use that particular picture xzy … yes or no? And if not, how can I contact the author and ask for permission? If I import to iPhoto I won't be able to do that anymore. And importing the pictures one by one, adding the pertaining information manually will take years! I am not exaggerating.

I don't see any information pane in the lower-left of the window (what window? You mean when I click in iPhoto on Events, locate the picture and double click on it? No small blue "info" there either as you can see here:

http://min.us/mAEzdecd8

Are you maybe using an older version of iPhoto? Perhaps you could send me a screen shot directly?)

> This pane contains marginally useful info, but pressing

I'm almost sure now that you must be using an older version of iPhoto or you are using Lion (I use OS 10.6.8). I can't find command-option-i in any of the iPhotos menus.

>

This has serious disadvantages:

A. Most pictures I store in Finder after having dragged them off some websites will be trashed later (sometimes a few hours later) because I realize that they are not worth being kept (not more suitable for my project, for example.)

B. Just dragging them off the webpage and dump them into a folder in Finder saves time, the download location is always preserved in the form of a URL, so it's easy to go to the original website and look for contact infos to contact the author in case I decide I want to use the picture for a project. Look at this:

http://min.us/mKYQABhzi

> Besides,
> it should make your workflow slightly smoother by eliminating the

I would consider this workflow a major impediment to intelligent work. First write down all the pertaining information such as URL and then delate the picture a couple of days later with all the information that I wrote down so painstakingly. What an absurd joke. :-)

>
> Oh, and as a photographer, thanks for at least giving a crap about

What am I supposed to do with the photos I have imported into iPhoto and I would like to use for my next project but whose source infos were wiped out by iPhoto? Should I just use them and then write a note to the reader saying: Lost the copyright holder, sorry folks, I'm using a Mac …

Hi Otto,

I think I may perhaps have forgotten to mention that the core problem is how to get all my old Internet photos into iPhoto *without loosing* the source data, the URLs. Importing the photos is not an option because that will result in loss of metadata.

What about Apple scripts? Has anybody written scripts to save the Spotlight comments as "Description" in iPhoto? That could be the solution.

Hi Terry,

imagine you are reading a book in your bedroom. You come across several words you are not familiar with and whose meaning you would like to know. You grab a piece of paper and write the words down on that piece of paper. After a while you take the paper, stand up and go into your living room in order to look up the words. Being now in your living room you realize that the ink has been wiped out on your way from your bedroom to your living room!

your piece of paper, first it's empty but you can write whatever you like on it
= Get Info window

Yes, I know. My own photos, taken with a digital camera, are displayed with correct metadata in *iPhoto*. The problem arises when photos from the Internet are imported into iPhoto.

Don't presume that photos imported from the Net contain Exif data, Anna.

I have, in the past, also brought pics in. As always, I've been curious as to when they were taken. As often as not, there is no Exif data present. This probably occurs when the original was changed (cropping, etc) and the Exif data was not transfered (or could not transfer) to the new file.

Pics that have been sent by friends almost always contain Exif data.

I use the iPhotos Information as much as possible. I'm fast approaching 20-thou photos and I need to be able to track people, situations, etc.

Information comments can be located/tracked within iPhoto and by Spotlight.

To be clear, are you talking about info *you've added* to the image files
using Finder, or info that's *already* part of the file? IOW, what is the
origin of the data you don't want to lose?

Tanya,

I don¹t use Snow Leopard, but I think the following will work. Highlight all
the emails in which there are attachments which you want to save. Since you
have 3 years¹ worth of emails, you probably will do better to work in
batches‹say 10 or 20 at a time.

After you have highlighted the emails, go to FILE->SAVE ATTACHMENTS. You¹ll
be asked for a folder in which to save them.

I hope this helps.

Howdy.

Since you don't mention which email program you are using no one can
answer your question.

If you are using Apple's included Mail program, it isn't easy to save
attachments in bulk.

If you are using an email program like Outlook, Entourage, GyazMail, or
a couple of others, these program have filters that are part of the
program and these filters can be configured to save all attachments
from a whole group of selected messages to a folder on the hard drive
that you designate.

It is possible that there is some kind of plugin for Apple Mail that
might also make this possible. I've tried to make an Automator plug in
for Apple's Mail that would also do this but could never make it work.

What about Photos > Detect Missing Faces? That triggers an option to add faces to a particular photo that is being displayed. Click on the info-button and in the right pane 'Faces' as well as 'Add a face' will be activated. Clicking on 'Add a face' will then insert these square labels into which you write the name (of the "face"). See here:

How many photos do you have in iPhoto? I have (only) 2.720 photos in iPhoto and there are no problems with Faces.

You should do the following immediately:

1) Create another User Account and make sure "Show fast user switching menu as icon" is activated. That makes switching quick and painless.

2) Start iPhoto in the new User Account. If the problem is gone then you have a problem with your old User Account and not with iPhone.
