iPhoto question

How can I import photos into iPhoto from Finder while preserving the original metadata and Spotlight comments?
I have a large collection of photos in Finder which I got from the internet. Information about each photo (copyrights etc.) is stored in the Spotlight Comments field (Command + i) and as metadata in the file itself (for example Where from: ). Now, when I import photos to iPhoto all comments will get lost, so it seems.
How can I import photos into iPhoto from Finder so that the original metadata and Spotlight comments will be preserved?

Anna, I am not really following your problem that clearly. Are you saying that you Have imported photo's into a folder on your computer and now you want to put them into iPhoto? If this is the case and they actually came with additional information you should be able to import them directly into iPhoto. At any rate that is the only way you can get them into iPhoto is by importing them. IPhoto will only import a copy of the photos and leave your original in the folders.

OK, I'll try to make it as simple as possible.
1) Find a picture on the net which you like.
2) Download that picture with Safari to your hard disk (or simply drag it from Safari to the desktop per Drag and Drop).
3) Now select the photo in Finder and press Command + i.
4) Then write some information such as the download location (= the site from where you got the photo) into the Comments field.
4) Under "More Info" (in the middle of the pane) you will see that metadata are enlisted: Dimensions, Color space, Color profile, Download location, etc.
5) Now close the pane which you opened with Command + i and import the photo into iPhoto, and delete the original in Finder, you don't want to clutter your hard disk with unnecessary duplicates.
6) Now scrutinize the photo in iPhoto. Spotlight Comments and metadata such as the download location (= the URL) have been stripped off during the import process.
7) In iPhoto you have now no possibility to see from where you got the damned photo, nor can you see whether the photo is copyrighted or not.
Is it clear now what I mean?

Where do you see "comments"? When I download a pic from the web it's just a graphic there is no text area? If I want it opened I use photoshop in CS but I think one can also use preview. Still it's usually just a .jpg. I must be missing something.

yeah - it's a real pain and was really hoping to avoid it with a
decent USB adapter and client software. I've used the 'AftertheMac'
adapter you mentioned and it worked OK but I didn't like the client.
Still looking.

Howdy.
Some companies make ear buds that come with removable ear size adapter
thingees.
I have a Bluetooth Jawbone Icon device (one ear only) that comes with 3
or 4 different style ear size things.

My ears are really strange, as the canals are very small. I found that
V-moda with the sets of rubber tips in 3 sizes are what works for me. They
are the only ones ,so far, that don't hurt, and don't fall out of my
ears. Before finding that brand, I had to use earphones that went over the
ear.

earbuds are horrible - in my ears, they're too big, and they hurt. they tend to look like disks, unlike earbuds which have some sort of flexible piece that fits inside the ear and stays in a lot better.
the "in the canal" version is a whole other thing - google etymotic, for example. those are great - they have a flexible earpiece that sits way inside the ear, molds itself to the ear and feels great. here's a link to their cheaper version - http://www.etymotic.com
another choice is the zagg smartbud - those have a microphone and a volume control for the ipod/iphone volume.
the others the people have recommended are also good.
have fun shopping!

Rob, those ends look exactly like the type ends I have tried before.
I like listening as I walk, and d__n things work themselves loose.
I haven't paid more than $20 for any pair of "buds" though. But the
more expensive ones look so close the the "waste of time/money" ones? jr

Well, the Klipsch stuff usually comes with THREE sets of gels, small,
medium and large. I'm not an overly huge guy, but I have to use the
large. It's trial and error.

In the 1980's, I had a soft in-canal earpiece professionally fitted for my work - unique for *my* left ear only. It was much more comfortable than leaving a stethoscope earpiece in my ear, but to maximally obliterate external noise, I still had to either hold my hand over it and the ear, or press it firmly into the canal (It was constructed so that it couldn't go too far in).
And I still didn't like it all that much for prolonged time periods.
I have had a pair of Bose noise-cancelling around-the-ear headphones for a few years, which I *love*, and recently got a pair of RocketFish blue-tooth on-ear phones; I find both of these considerably more comfortable than any kind of EAR-phone.

Re: Mac & Parallels
Posted by: "Jurgen Richter" yahoo-1@sympatico.ca epsongroups
Fri Oct 28, 2011 10:10 am (PDT)
Quite true - Windows is Windows through Bootcamp, but through Parallels
or another virtual machine there are many issues that come up that are
specifically Mac relevant, like:
If you are printing to a USB-connected printer through Windows, you
cannot piggyback on to the same USB connection to print from the Mac
concurrently; at least that is my experience here.
If I want to print from my Mac side, I have to use the wireless print
queue with the Mac driver, else through USB it just does not go
anywhere. If, however, I quit Parallels and the virtual machine, then
the USB bus becomes an "apple" bus and prints normally.... so there is
the biggest issue. I have not been able to get around that....
When you plug in a USB flash drive you are presented an option each time
if you want it to be recognized as a PC or Mac "compatible" drive... in
my case, i use the key for encrypted PC files, so i have checked the
option to "always remember this choice" so that it mounts as a
"lettered" drive/device under WinXP (= drive 'J'), not as "Data Traveler
4G". While I may be able to access the device, in general anything you
connect has to be flavored either Mac or PC at any given time; both will
not function together as it is an OS/Driver issue, and the driver seem
fixed for the moment and cannot be changed on the fly. At least that has
been my experience...
So the questions should be asked on this forum in those circumstances...
they can always be referred to another forum if they are really deemed
off-topic.
Cheers

Yes, and therefore the virtualization software if fair game. Even discussing how to safely and efficiently run Windows on your Mac seems appropriate fodder.
But these considerations do not mean "Windows is now a part of the "Apple" ecosystem".

I fear we are getting a bit off-topic here. Time to move on?

Is it possible ...

to access the files on my G5 from my MacBook Air? Some kind of file sharing for all the other stuff besides iTunes (which I've activated)?
The G5 is connected to my wi-fi through a USB adapter, not with AirPort. Have gone into System Preferences/Sharing and then I'm not quite sure what I need to do to make them talk to each other. If that's even possible.
I've done some preliminary Google searching, but I thought I'd best start here for a yay or nay and, if a yay, maybe a link or two to get me started.
Thanks.

Howdy.
You can access/swap files between your MacBook Air and your G5 Mac.
This can be done in a variety of ways.
The basic requirement is that the two computers be on the same
network.
The MB Air has to use WiFi to network.
The G5's networking ability depends on using either a wired Ethernet
cable (to the router - if it has an Ethernet port(s). Or, the G5 might
be able to "talk" to the WiFi router via the USB adapter and then on to
the MB Air. I'm not sure whether a USB wireless adapter will work for
this purpose - no direct experience with this.
If the G5 has an Apple AirPort card installed in it, the this would
work to network to the WiFi router. The G5 has a slot for an AirPort
card but may not have had the card as original equipment when bought.
This card is something that can be bought used on eBay or other places
but if you do this IT IS IMPORTANT to be sure to get the exactly
correct AirPort card model (they look very much alike but are not and
an incorrect model may actually cause damage to the AirPort socket
connector pins if it is inserted).
Other options are to use Bluetooth (two Macs must be pretty close
together - perhaps in same room.) If both Macs of WiFi/AirPort, then
that can be used directly without going through a router. Not as
convenient but still possible is to connect both computers via a
FireWire cable and use FireWire Target Disk (FTD) mode. But both
computers have to have a FireWire port for this to work. Also
possible is to connect an Ethernet cable directly between both
computers but may also not be very convenient (older computers will
require a special Ethernet cable for this called an Ethernet CrossOver
cable but the G5 should do fine with a regular cable). The Ethernet
option means both computers have to have an Ethernet port.
You have to turn some things on on each computer.
1. System Preferences > Sharing panel.
2. Turn on File Sharing.
3. Do this on both Macs.
The G5 will be running, probably, an older Mac OS X version so the
Sharing panel may look a bit different on the two Macs.
If both Macs are booted up, if both on the network, and if both have
File Sharing turned on in Sharing panel, then you should see the other
Mac listed in the Sidebar as a "Shared" item. You can access the
other computer by clicking the name in the Sidebar. There is a
connection routine to go through - see below. Once this connection is
working you can even automate it by adding the mounted icon of the
other computer (once it appears on your Mac's Desktop) to the Login
items in your User Account in System Preferences (if you do this then
you need to be sure the other computer is always booted up).
There are a couple of things to be aware of. I'm going to be my usual
wordy self in hopes that some of the new Mac users here may find the
info useful.
Special folders on each Mac for Sharing files.
A. Public folder.
The folder named Public inside your home user account folder is for
sharing files between different computers on a network. The Public
folder is exactly that. It's not for private things. So anything in
computer A's Public folder can be see by anyone using computer B or
computer C. EXCEPT - that the sub folder inside Public named "Drop
Box" is ONLY visible to the home account owner. This is so Computer
user B can drop his resume in Computer User A's Public/Drop Box and
ONLY Computer User A can see it.
B. Shared folder.
In your Users folder (but NOT in your own home user account folder) is
a folder named Shared. This folder is intended for Macs with two or
more user accounts on the same computer. So if Debbi has an account
named Debbi and Debbi's 9 year old son Donnie has and account named
Donnie, then by putting files in Shared both Debbi and Donnie can see,
open, and use these files no matter which user account is logged in.
Access Tricks and Restricting Access Tricks.
Once the two computers are networked a couple of tricks are worth
knowing.
If you access the other computer as a "guest" you will have access to
that Public folder only (see above).
If you access the other computer using the other computer's home user
account name and password, then that other computer assumes that its
owner is accessing it and it gives you full access.
You can restrict access in several ways. One way is to create an
account on your Mac for the person who needs access and then you can
restrict access for this new account to specified folders that you
designate. The person accessing your computer will have an account
name and password and you can be flexible about making access available
to whatever you want. It could be two folders that your designate, or,
it could be your entire Documents folder, etc. Depending what version
of Mac OS X you have you can do other restriction for specific files
and folders even down to making it possible for other computers users
to read but not change, save, or alter a file.
