There is much, much more at apple's site. This is the "top level", from
where you can "drill down" to tutorials, manuals, discussion, etc.
<http://www.apple.com/support/>

You might want to start with
<http://www.apple.com/support/switch101/> and
<http://www.apple.com/support/mac101/>

Of course, we can try and answer your questions too. ;)

Lion Accounts & Mail

Posted by: "Harry Flaxman" harry.flaxman@comcast.net   hflaxman001

Originally, I set the accounts prefpane up with all of my email accounts
excluding Yahoo, as it has always been a pay service, and apparently still
is, under most circumstances.

I decided to give it a go. Well, lo and behold the OS set up a Yahoo mail
account within Apple Mail, configured as IMAP. This is not a workaround.
It seems to me that Apple must have some sort of deal with Yahoo to have
this happen. Has anyone heard anything about this?

I tried setting the same account up on a pc using Outlook, and there is no
way it will work. It is denying access to any server.

Going to the web site, yes, they still charge monthly for POP access, talk
about being behind the times!

I have a silly problem that is another reason I don't use the mail on my
ipad, but go directly to gmail. It seems as though few few of my email
addresses are in the address book, but htere are bunches of email addies
that belong to people that I have never heard of. It does have my husband's
address though. I see no way of getting into the address book, and even if I
did, I don't want to have to manually input all my addresses.

Thank you, I made the thumb drive.

My son had a MacBook Pro that got wine spilled on it. The person who spilt it, bought him a new one since the Mac geniuses could not get it to work.

He sent it to me, we have a friend that could work on it. Just for fun, we started it and it works…. I was hoping to put Lion on it but a thumb drive made from a Mac that came with Lion installed will not work with a machine that has Snow Leopard on it. But that is okay, Snow Leopard on a free MacBook Pro is just fine. And I have the security of the thumb drive backup. Thanks again.

Or, make a thumb drive for Lion. Or, both.

Help with Installing MS Office 2011 for Mac

Posted by: "Nick Andriash" Nickster248@telus.net   andriash2005

Thu Oct 20, 2011 9:48 am (PDT)

Hi Everyone,

I've had Office 2011 for Mac happily installed for the past 4 months. However, after all the recent updates I installed, suddenly Outlook would no longer open...it simply bounced on the dock a few times. So, I tried re-installing Office for Mac, and have run into a new problem. The installer says it cannot continue because SyncServicesAgent is open, but for the life of me, I cannot find a way to close the application.

I am new to Mac and am not sure where I can find a list of open applications so I can close this darn file. I do not even know why such a file would be open in the first place.

Thank you for your help.

Howdy.

Welcome to the Mac, Nick.

SyncServicesAgent is something installed by Microsoft.

It's located in:

Applications/Microsoft Office 2011/Office folder

A couple of things.

1. I have MS Office 2011 and have just have MS Word 2011 running then
quit it. But SyncServicesAgent was not running before, during, or after
I launched then quite MS Word.

Something must be mucked up with it.

After you find this mucked up MS file, if it can't be quit, then try a
Safe Disk boot. Boot with the Shift key pressed. The computer will
take longer to boot. Safe Disk boot does some maintenance things,
deletes font caches that are part of the now invisible Apple ATS system
(Apple Typographic System), and turns off things that automatically
load each time you boot normally.

After the Safe Disk boot, find SyncServicesAgent file and try to delete
it.

Note that after doing a Safe Disk Boot you need to reboot normally
since a lot of normal stuff (like Internet access) gets turned off for
the Safe Disk Boot.

2. Programs and processes that are running can be seen by using a
utility found in the Applications/Utilities folder. It's named
Activity Monitor.

You can use Activity Monitor for a bunch of things. Check for RAM
usage, drive and network usage, apps and processes running and the
percent of CPU they are taking (in real time).

Yo can use Activity Monitor to pick a Process and then quit or force
quite it.

3. You can search for and find all kinds of things (like
SyncServicesAgent) by using the Find command. This command uses the
Spotlight index that is created when you first create a user account
and which is continually and automatically updated.

To do a specific Find/Search for something do the following:

a. Open a Finder window.
b. Select an icon (a drive, a folder, a sub folder).
c. Press Command f.
d. The Finder window changes into a Search/Find window. There are
many options. Look at the popup menu that should say "Kind." Click
this and at bottom select the Other item. Use the long list of items
in Other and go through them and put a check in the check box. When
you close "Other" the check(s) you made will promote this search
specific item to the Kind menu for convenience in using.

You can search for invisible files and even for things like the f stop
setting in a photograph.

A search that you set up using specific criteria can e saved as a
"Smart Search." It will then remember what was searched for and just
by clicking the icon will instantly display the current results.

Good Luck!

Denver Dan

You are right there. All my other MS Programs such as Word, Excel & PP work just fine, but Outlook just will not start. Now I am receiving the following message:

This identity cannot be opened with this version of Outlook

I've been using MS Office for years, but this message is new to me. But to put things in perspective, my MacBook Pro itself is not working properly. I receive more coloured wheels now than I ever did before. I am almost tempted to erase everything and start over again.

BTW, thanks very much for the very informative reply. I started flagging all your posts many weeks ago. ;o)

Howdy.

Try the 3 basic troubleshooting routines.

-safe disk
-delete cache files (try the free OnyX utility)
-Repair Disk permissions

Also check for Randy Singer posts listing his excellent Mac troubleshooting site.

Safari Extension to change text encoding?

Posted by: "Bill B." bill501@mindspring.com   kernos501

Does anyone know of a Safari extension that could change the text encoding of a page on the fly? Too many sites don't declare a charset and use my default which is UTF-8 or Western. Still I get a lot of bad characters.

And, why is there not a search field on Apple's extension page?

The Finder is the Mac equivalent of Windows Explorer/My Computer. You should
see the drive on the Desktop at top right and in the sidebar of a Finder
window.

One of the best things about a Mac is when you insert the flash drive the drive will appear on the Desktop for your use.

When you stop using the drive you must press Command-E to eject the drive. Don't forget to highlight the drive first.

Howdy.

Are you using Mac OS X 10.7 Lion? If so, the option of displaying
hard drive icons on the Desktop is off by default in Lion (but not off
by default in earlier versions of OS X). Why off? Who knows.

Go to:

Finder > Preferences.

Click the General icon in Finder Preferences. Note the check boxes for
"Show these items on the desktop."

Put a check in all four of them. The flash/thumb drive should
immediately show the Desktop icon for it.

Howdy.

Thanks, Bill, for this note. I've owned Tex-Edit Plus for a long time
and it was badly in need of an update!

For folks not aware, this is one of the great and convenient and
many-featured text editors. It's a GREAT program for doing a bunch of
automatic stuff to blocks of text (like removing tabs, extra spaces,
converting smart quotes with plain quotes, and much more) with a single
click.

Let's hope it still has a Save As feature!

Indeed it does and still includes saving as a number of older word processor formats. The scripts are all there. I use the Convert scripts all the time. It is universal so will work with Lion. The old version was PPC only.

And it still has a real Font menu (which can be shown in the font-face) which I like a lot better than Apple's silly font picker.

It has a number of features found in BBEdit, though is easier to use, IMO, esp in the Find and Replace dialogue. I think of it more as a text manipulator than a word processor.

Suggestions on a new computer -  iMac or Mac Mini

Hi all,

I think with the new IOS 5, I'm finally going to have to step up and
upgrade my G5 tower and my kid's G4 Imac.

I wanted some advice from you all on whether it makes more sense to
get an Mac mini or an Imac keeping in mind the balance between cost
and capabilities.

For my tower upgrade, I figure I have a bluetooth keyboard, mouse and
the 23" Cinema HD
Display that works well. I have an external Isight camera that I use
with this. Is there any reason not to get the Mac Mini. I know in
the past the Mac-mini was targeted at switchers. The tower works fine
for all my current needs but given that it can't work with all the new
IOS and cloud software I'm some what forced to upgrade. I'm also
trying to do so as cheaply as possible.

Same issue with my kids, they are on a IMac 1.25 GHz G4. Complaining
about the speed of accessing their web-sites and also that it is
incompatible with some software at their school and with iCloud. I
have a spare Viewsonic VGA monitor that I figure could be used with a
Mac Mini though I'm not quite sure if the latest Mac-mini's allow a
VGA connection of if there is an adaptor. So should I get an Imac to
replace the kid's current iMac or get a Mac Mini.

Thanks for your recommendations.

Jay

I think the Mini would fit both of your needs quite nicely. I think it will
allow you to hook up to a VGA monitor via a DVI to VGA adapter.

Or... you could buy yourself a new iMac 27" and give the kids your 23"
monitor and decide who gets your keyboard mouse and the ones that come with
the iMac. :)
