My 4s heats up during the use of some application. This looks like a lot of heat to me coming off the side. Anyone else experiencing this ? Thx

That is not anything new or unique to the 4s. My 3GS will get hot if I use
the GPS for extended periods.

Once, on a hot summer day I accidentally left it on the dashboard in my car
and when I came out it was so hot I could not hold it without getting
burned.

No biggie, I just turned on the AC and put the phone in front of the vent.
Within 20 mins it was back to normal and it still works fine.

My new 4s gets very hot when using some apps, particularly a gps app. I
checked the discussion forums , this seems to be a problem with many others
with no solution. The apple tech site shows a warning that will appear if
your device gets too hot to use, but I still worry that it is damaging the
unit.

I already had a Starbucks gift card which was purchased from a local shop. All works fine with that, including adding $$. If you visit a store, get a card for whatever amount then register it in the app. You should be good to go from there.

Strangest things anyone asked Siri?

Posted by: "Rich" thekellergroup@gmail.com   rkkeller8

So what have people asked Siri that might not be main stream?

Siri takes everything very literal and sometimes it's funny. I was
playing around with a bunch of friends and:

We said "I am horny" and Siri gave me a list of escorts in my area!

We said something about "I don't have a date tonight" and she pulled
up dating services in my area.

We also asked a few things I can't include here but Siri can get funny.
If she doesn't know some answers she pulls up Google searches
on them.

I am too. Took it to the Apple store and because I was one month out of warranty, they wouldn't do anything. I am just having to wait patiently till February when I can upgrade.

I hate having to put the button six times just to get it to register.

My wife had trouble with hers, a month out of warranty. We took it to the Apple store Saturday and they found dust under the Home button. They cleaned it (for free) and it works fine now.

I have yet to see a software issue cause this.

All the times i have seen this problem (home button) its always been a physical issue. Corrosion, dust, debris, stuff like that causing it to fail.
replacing or cleaning has always worked.

I had trouble with home button and software...too many apps installed made the iphone slow and when I pressed the home button seemed to have a delay...and so many people talking about this problem I tought it was hardware...restored and it got fast again

Smartphones nowdays are just like computers...too much stuff in it makes it slow.

Apple iOS 5 is around 750MB in size and MS Windows XP fits in a CD which is about 594MB...just to give an idea.

Sent to you by Bill Boulware via Google Reader: Control Siri across the
room: Iris 9000 turns iPhone 4S into your own personal HAL 9000 via
9to5Mac by Christian Zibreg on 10/25/11

Siri, open the pod. I mean, do I need an umbrella today?

It looks like HAL 9000, it’s named similar to the famous antagonist in
Arthur C. Clarke’s science fiction Space Odyssey saga and is the first
accessory for Siri, the iPhone 4S’s artificial intelligence-powered
digital secretary. Introducing the Iris 9000, a voice control module
from ThinkGeek that lets you control Apple’s Siri voice assistant from
across the room. Just place your iPhone 4S into the Iris 9000 cradle
and tap the included micro remote control once to trigger Siri. The
accessory features a built-in microphone that picks up your voice from
up to 50 feet away and the embedded speaker amplifies Siri’s spoken
responses.

And, you can also make and receive phone calls using the Iris 900 like
a standard speakerphone. Plus, the glowing eye that flickers with
Siri’s voice completes the effect. Now, if only we could replace Siri’s
voice with a soft and conversational (but yet a tad menacing) HAL 9000
voice, which was played in the Space Odyssey saga by actor Douglas
Rain. You can register your interest for the Iris 9000 with ThinkGeek
today. The accessory will go on sale in Spring 2012 for $59.99. Check
out the cool presentation video included right below and go past the
fold for the specs.

Iris 9000 by ThinkGeen
• control your iPhone 4S and Siri from across the room
• classic Sci-fi styling. Aluminum accents.
• included micro remote triggers Siri with a single button press
• built-in mic picks up your voice at a distance

• powered by included 120-240V AC adapter

Personal testimony: I just moved from 4 to 4S.

EVERYTHING is faster.
Booting, system functions (task switching for example), app startup....
Everything.

I periodically test download speed with one of the SpeedTest Apps, and have been seeing as high as 5 megabit per second (double my previous high on the 4).

I have several fractal apps (graphics intensive) - WOW!

Same here for all except Speedtest, I haven't noticed any increase in Speed
Tests, on 3G I averaged 3.7Mbps down and 1Mbps Up on my iPhone 4 and maybe
4Mbps down and 1.2Mbps up.

I don't think they have flipped the HSDPA+ service in my area and/or have
not enabled it on my phone. Although, I just looked at my AT&T Bill and
they have moved me to "iPhone 4G Data Unlimited" from my previous, "iPhone
Data Unlimited" and charged me for a partial month and a month in advance
AND charged me a $20.50 Upgrade Fee - the usual "$18 that we are not going
to use to increase our activation server capacity no matter how many years
we go down" and an additional $2.50 in "fees" om that $18 that they also are
not going to use to fix it.

Then again I am a little spoiled by my VZW LTE Android phone averages 14Mbps
down and 11 Mbps Up so I am a little spoiled and often flip WiFi Tethering
on and connect iPhone to it via WiFi when downloading anything more than a
few MB. Over WiFi the 4S Speedtests faster than iMac on the same WiFi
network, assuming it can write faster than the spinning drive..

On a side note, I managed to fix my "freezing keys" URL entry by deleting
all bookmarks on all machines and forcing an overwrite of iCloud - I guess
at some point in time one installation of Safari imported my Firefox
Bookmarks which have decades worth of items saved so that every time I
tapped a key in a URL it was scanning every bookmark...

Lost apps and music on 3GS - very frustrated husband

Posted by: "Carol" floridabouvs@gmail.com   floridabouvs

My husband (3GS) is over the cloud with annoyance at having done the upgrade to 5.0 and now all his music and most of his apps are gone. These were downloaded apps and music from his library, not purchased items. But it represents hours of time.
How can he get all that back?
BTW, I had no trouble at all with a 4 and the ipad 2.
Thanks,

Um, "downloaded apps"? As opposed to what?
Download them again. You only have to buy them once, re-downloads are free.

"Music from his library, not purchased items"? I suppose this means ripped CDs, not bought in iTunes. In which case they must be in his iTunes music library.
Re-sync them from iTunes to the iPhone.

What does the "cloud" have anything to do with upgrading to 5.0 and how do
either have to do with losing music and apps? You upgrade/restore phone,
sync back music and apps using iTunes and turn on iCloud if you want to use
Find My iPhone, Contacts, Mail, PhotoStream, etc.

The only thing that could have to do with Music is iTunes Match which hasn't
been released publicly yet, although at $25/year to stream OR download any
song (in a high quality AAC version) you have ever put in your iTunes is a
great value - much better then their overpriced $20/year for an extra 10GB
of storage (I pay $5 year for an extra 20GB at Google and will eventually
move to an extra 80GB for the same $20).
