Upgrading, Help!

Ive been trying to read everyone's posts, look at links posted etc. I'm really going crazy. Many of the links and suggestions are great, but my head is swimming and I don't know where to go from here.

I'm not going to upgrade the phone until I get all this settled plus it sound like the waiting line for the phone is quite long or will be, so I may as well wait. I'm also not sure that as soon as I upgrade the next one will come out with more improvements. No one seems to know when.
Meanwhile, I've read about upgrade problems with the new iOS and the cloud etc.

I need a succinct list if anyone has the time or desire to figure out what my first move should be?
Should I do the cloud first then iTunes upgrade? I thought I'd try my iPad first, but it wouldn't let me unless I went to I tunes first on my computer to upgrade.
I'm trying to put some of my songs on CD before i lose them and copy my addresses, but how do I know that I will be able to upload them from my exported list?

I did the iTunes upgrade first. Then upgraded my iphone. Last I did the 10.7.2 upgrade to Lion. All went well.

On another note, I have my iTunes library on an external drive, so IF anything went wrong, all I'd have to do is have iTunes reimport the music to iTunes.

You HAVE to use iTunes first for this upgrade. The reason is that is will
do a FULL save (backup ) of all your stuff on your iPhone then it will
automatically RESTORE the info from your Itunes to your Iphone as part of
the install of the new OS.

It's nice that there is an app like iTunes that all your syncs go through. It's pretty much automatic, if you let it be. You can also do your syncs manually through iTunes. That's good too. Gotta have some place to save your stuff other than your iPhone. I've heard too many Apple Genius stories of people that haven't synced their iPhones and when their iPhones had problems or they upgraded, lost what was on their iPhones....ie: pictures, saved emails etc. I'm a proponent of backing up.

This applies to any device. If that device is the only place you have
stuff, that stuff vanishes the instant that device is stolen/broken/wiped.

What is it about backups that people don't get?

The corrolary to this is that yo only have to back up a device once. --

No I haven't synced my 3Gs like that. I usually just do the manual configurations, but I haven't updated since 3.2 nor backed up since then. So just back up and sync?

I'm nervous about using iCloud. Would I have to upgrad the iOS on my 3GS?

For me, messages in general are ephemeral.
Shortly after sending or receiving one, the conversation is deleted.
So when I upgraded my iPhone 4 to iOS 5, I didn't really pay attention.
And again, when I backed up the 4, wiped it, then restored the backup to the new 4S, I didn't pay close attention to what was happening to messages.

But after those two maneuvers, I now see that I still have the single old message that I was keeping - from AT&T - from November, 2010.

Try turning it off and back on, as long as you have internet connectivity
it should be working.

My story about my trip to the Apple store will be coming in when I get
a chance but in the meantime:
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/9To5Mac-MacAllDay/~3/NzhBdC2zZIA/

Sent to you by Bill Boulware via Google Reader: Apple airs impressive
new iPhone 4S iCloud, Siri, and Camera TV ads via 9to5Mac by Mark
Gurman on 10/30/11

iPhone 4S iCloud TV advertisment

Following up on the first iPhone 4S siri TV advertisement from last
week, Apple has just released three new advertisements surrounding the
iPhone 4S. The iCloud iPhone 4S advertisement shown above shows the out
of the box iCloud integration for the iPhone 4S. Examples include
downloading a song on the iPhone 4S and having it instantly appear on
the user̢۪s Mac, bookmark syncing between an iPhone 4S and an iPad 2,
iWork document syncing, and Photo Stream.

New Siri and Camera ads are after the break:

iPhone 4S Camera TV advertisement

Apple̢۪s TV advertisement about the iPhone 4S camera highlights the
device̢۪s eight megapixel sensor and advanced optics. Additionally, the
commercial discussing photo editing options in the iOS 5 camera
application and full Twitter integration for sharing photos.

New iPhone 4S Siri TV advertisment

Apple̢۪s new Siri iPhone 4S advertisement, a followup to the original
from last week, highlights Google Maps integration, listening to text
messages, checking the weather, and hearing up a day̢۪s appointment
schedule.

Thanks, MacBenTosh!

Any of the free emoji apps in the iTunes app store will work fine. If you've upgraded to iOS 5, there is one already built into it.

Re: iCloud without Lion

When I check sync all books I get a message: "Allexisting songs, movies and TV shows on the iPad will be removed." This makes no sense to me. So I don't sync them. I've never been able to get an explanation why this happens. I've asked on users groups and looked online.

Sent from my iPad

>When you plug in your iDevices to your computer and open iTunes, do you go to the books area of iTunes and check sync all books? Do you get the message that it's going to delete your books at that time?

I'm not sure how much of iOS 5 is useable with Snow Leopard since I upgraded to Lion before upgrading to iOS 5. Sorry :-(

I want to update the 3GS and iPad 2 to iOS 5 and use iCloud to sync Mail, Notes, Calendar, Books and a few non-Apple apps between the iPhone and iPad. Is this possible without upgrading to Lion or am I asking for trouble? Is it better to forget about iCloud until I've done the Lion upgrade?

But the horror stories I've read about updating make me hesitant to try. I'm not a novice, but not a pro either. For example, I still am not sure how to get my book purchases from the i devices to the computer through iTunes. The "all your books will be wiped" warning notice when setting up sync has scared me off from trying.

Upgrading from 3G to 4S

I would like to upgrade but have several questions that I'm sure can be answered here. 1)Does the 4S use the same charger connector? 2)Will all my Apps transfer over and work?

Thanks very much.

Yes & Yes - but I wouldn't try and restore a backup of a 3G to a 4S - set
up as new, sync all of your apps over, etc.

Thanks Bill,
If I go to the AT&T store to upgrade, can they move everything over? Would that be easier?
