I think Anna's point is that during the iPhoto import process, the
original file is stripped of some of the information that resided in
the original file downloaded from the internet – not information she
added.

I think what gets stripped is the "Where from:" field that shows up
when you use Get info from the Finder, and the Last Opened field.

Anna - I did a test and downloaded a picture from the internet. I
can see the Where from and Last Opened field using the Get Info
command but when I open the file using Photoshop Elements browser, I
do not see this information listed in the metadata. I think Apple's
file system must add the information on where the file was downloaded
from but it isn't part of the file's metadata.

That's why you aren't seeing it in iPhoto. However this information
isn't lost. If you open up the iPhoto library, using control click
and show package contents, you can go to the actual file which is
under Originals:Year:Event or Date: You can do a Get Info at this
point and see the information that isn't showing in the metadata.

You are a photographer, could you point me to a photo on the web with EXIF data? I would then download the photo, import it in iPhoto and see if it gets through. I suggest we do this because I still can not rule out the possibility that something on my computer has got corrupt. I know that my User Account is not working exactly as it should.

I get the point, although I still think Apple should have preserved the Finder info comments.

I think I will follow your advice. I guess I have now no other choice.

Till now I considered my iPhoto as a place where I would store and organize photos that I wanted to keep (forever!). Now it will become a dumping ground for all sorts of photos, also photos I throw away again after a couple of hours after having realized that they don't fit in my project or were rejected by the magazines I use to write for.

My old workflow was certainly easier and I maintain more intelligent: Just dump your picture downloads from the web into a folder in Finder and you are done. The Finder will automatically keep track of the download-location (the URL) for you. Later (hours or days later, depending on the work you are doing) you will take a look at those photos again and throw half of them away because after a certain time has passed you see them in a different, more objective light. Finally I end up with a few, really good and interesting photos that I want to keep and they will be put in iPhoto. That was the old method. Now I'll probably have to create a new iPhoto library and name it "Pending approval" or something similar, indicating that those photos are waiting for my last approval, most of those photos will be delated anyhow, after I have spent huge time meticulously writing down the URLs, all in vain.

Thanks a lot for the suggestion. Hope the import from iPhoto to Photo Mechanic will not result in loss of information then. :-)

Of course: http://www.flickr.com/photos/macdane/285277657/

Here's a tip: when viewing a photo on Flickr, click on "Actions" just
above the photo and select "View Exif Info." If it's there, you'll see
it; if not, you won't. Either way you'll know whether to expect the
data to show up in iPhoto based on whether it's there to begin with.

> I get the point, although I still think Apple should have preserved

I agree. What they probably should've done is write those comments to
an actual EXIF field rather that would be preserved, rather than
creating a new proprietary field. That way, the info there would be
preserved upon import to virtually *any* image cataloging/editing app.

> How do you sort and store *your* photos?

I use and (mostly) love Adobe Lightroom. I've been using it since the
first beta and am heavily invested in it at this point, to the tune of
250,000-ish photos. I'll be in bad shape if I ever decide to move to
something else!

Although it's nice that there's a demo version of PM, I'd suggest a
couple things first. I'd make sure to back everything up before trying
anything, and browse their support forums for situations similar to
yours before attempting anything on your own. If you go one step
further and contact them for help before you begin, they might be able
to offer some good specific suggestions.

PM has some powerful tools for re-mapping data from one field to
another; the real question is whether it can even see the Spotlight
Comments field to begin with. If it can, you should be in great shape.

Best of luck!

Getting back iBiz info through Time Machine

Posted by: "Barb Adamski" adamski@telus.net   bkadamski

Mon Oct 31, 2011 9:53 am (PDT)

Hi there.

I somehow deleted information for a client whose project I was tracking through iBiz. I desperately need it back. How can I access that info through Time Machine? Clicking on the icon just gives me the software info. How do I get to the actual data that I need to restore?

Thanks!

When I double click the Time Machine icon in /Applications, I get a stack of windows showing my Home directory, with the top window labeled "Today." Along the right edge of the screen is a "ruler" showing past dates of Time Machine backups. I can select a backup by either clicking the "ruler" or one of the stacked windows.
The selected backup then becomes the front window, and I can select any or all items in it to restore. I can also navigate out of my Home directory if necessary, to restore from any existing backups of other directories.
Hope that helps.

Hi, Robert.

Thanks for your help.

I'm not sure if that will work or not. Before when I tried to restore certain files, I can actually view the file I wish to restore. With iBiz I have to restore the app. What I really want to do is make sure the correct timesheet is there and restore just that. The problem with restoring the whole app is that I might restore a previous version of a different timesheet as well, which might not be a good thing (although at least in that case, I can write down the number of hours and reinstate the project later).

Hope that makes sense. I'm not sure I'm explaining it correctly.

I guess you should try and find out exactly where iBiz stores its timesheets. The most likely locations would be in your Home directory in ~/Library/Application Support/iBiz or in the root level /Library/Application Support/iBiz. Some apps store such files in your Home directory ~/Documents folder (Microsoft Office uses this location).
If you are still unable to find the timesheets, you could try emailing the iBiz developer to ask them where the timesheets are located.

Jurgen,

Have you gone into Settings: Facetime and assigned the e-mails you can
be reached at for video calls? Also the other party has to set up
Facetime in a similar fashion. If you select a phone or e-mail which
hasn't been registered you do get the Facetime failure message.

In what unique ways do you use your iDevice

Posted by: "DaveC" davec2468@yahoo.com   davec2468

Late to the iPhone party (with my "new" 3G): gifted someone's old
iPhone, now I'm in the game.

In what unique ways do you use your iPhone/iPad/iPod touch? We all
know that it's a phone (well, one of them is... (c: ), a music and
video player, an appointment reminder, contacts book, web browser,
mail client.

But in what way do you use your iDevice that's unique? (The geekier
the better...)

Thanks,

Howdy.

Using the Zaggat's guide app on iPhone on the New Jersey Turnpike in a
raging January blizzard to find Killmeyers Old Bavaria Inn on Staten
Island, using the Outerbridge Crossing from NJ to Staten Island,
finding the restaurant using the Google Map app, sliding into a
shoveled out parking space between 4 foot banks of snow, sitting under
a giant stuffed moose head with lots of München and Bayarisch knick
knacks, ending up with a very good meal of leberkase and rouladen, the
waitress dressed in full Munich drindl saying in her very best Brooklyn
accent, "Glad youse guys came in tonight," then sliding through Staten
Island and on to the Verrazano Narrows Bridge and over to Brooklyn in
snow being driving at horizontally past the car, and still with help
from Google Maps on iPhone finding the hotel in Brooklyn.

<http://www.killmeyers.com/>

Being on Staten Island, which is one of the five boroughs of New York
City is, in parts, like being in a little village in upstate New York.

Retail news: Seamless Fifth Avenue glass cube debuting this Friday,

Sent to you by Bill Boulware via Google Reader: Retail news: Seamless
Fifth Avenue glass cube debuting this Friday, Apple Store app
self-checkout, multiple shipping addresses for online orders via
9to5Mac by Christian Zibreg on 10/31/11

An artist̢۪s rendition of the seamless glass cube Apple Store at New
York̢۪s Fifth Avenue.
Credit: The Gothamist.

Apple is set to unveil an all-new glass cube entrance into its iconic
outlet at New York City̢۪s Fifth Avenue, MacRumors has learned. The new
look should be unveiled this coming Friday, November 4. The work on
remodeling the building hailed as New York̢۪s top photo attraction began
this summer. According to permits, changes include using larger,
seamless pieces of glass and reducing the number of glass panes from 90
to just 15, or three per side.

Apple is also said to remove protective bollards, install new pavers
around the cube̢۪s perimeter and remove and reinstall surrounding water
drains. This major makeover will cost six million dollars, nearly
matching the seven million dollars they reportedly paid back in 2005 to
assemble the now iconic glass cube entrance.

MacRumors also noted that Apple will allow buyers to use the official
Apple Store for iOS app (which, shamefully, has yet to be updated with
full iPad support) to “utilize self-checkout for purchases of
accessories and other shelf-stocked items at the company̢۪s retail
stores”. Heylookitseric is mentioning the November 3 launch for the
updated program. How is the self-checkout process going to work?

After making a purchase via the Apple Store app using the self-checkout
option, you will receive a receipt vie email and show it to a store
employees as proof of purchase, the publication explains. This option
will not be available for Macs and iOS devices and is meant as a
time-saver for both customers and retail employees in regard to
accessories kept on store shelves.

For items kept in the stockroom, such as computers, notebooks and iOS
devices, customers will be able to pre-purchase those using the app and
complete their transaction with an assistance of a store employees
carrying an EasyPay device. Another interesting retail update from
Apple right after the break.

As you know, Apple last Wednesday began offering in-store pickup of
online orders in San Francisco and all 16 other stores in the Bay Area.
Today, the program has expanded into the Fifth Avenue store and three
other stores in New York City (the SoHo, Upper West Side and West 14th
Street stores). The company is also said to introduce a new buying
option to allow for different shipping addresses for items purchased in
a single transaction. This way, for example, daddy will be able to buy
an iPad for grandpa and an iPod touch for his junior in a single
transaction and have them shipped to two different addresses, which
wasn̢۪t possible in the past without having to purchase each item in a
separate transaction.

Yes or you can plug an Ethernet cable into both machines and it will
transfer it that way, it is faster than Firewire (as long as old MBP has a
Gigabit Ethernet).

How do you define "network"? Hook the two of them together with a
FireWire cable and boot the old one in target disk mode and that IS a
network.

Odd domains that seem to be legitimate

Hello,

Mostly curious. I periodically get email with links to odd top level
domains.

Example: http://is.gd/XXXXXX where the X's are a random set of Alphanumeric
characters. Another example is the ly (Libya) top level domain. I originally
thought that these were bogus links but keep getting these from legitimate
sources who have verified the links. GD is Grenada.

Can someone explain the IT purpose of this pattern to me.

iPod Nano, iMac and Cinema Display question

Hey Guys - does anyone know if the current generation Nanos support
Bluetooth? I see some "add-ons" that plug in to the Apple 30-pin connector
and create a dedicated Bluetooth to the other end of the device but I would
like to use all of my current Bluetooth headphones.

Second, I stay on top of the iPhone/iPad/iOS beyond a normal level but I
only scan the rest - has there been any rumors other than (
Buyersguide.Macrumors.Com) about a holiday iMac Refresh? The other half is
finally ready to give up her Windows desktop and either wants a 27" iMac or
would "settle" for a 27" Cinema Display that she can plug her Macbook (or
my old Macbook Air, or one of the Mac Minis) in to.

Personally I would like to buy myself a new Quad Core i7 27" and convince
her my last gen 24" will fit her needs.

The above leads to the last question, I know that the previous 2010 27"
iMacs allowed you to use the display for another machine and they disabled
that with the introduction of the 2011 Thunderbold 27", correct? The
current 27" Cinema Displays support both current and older non-Thunderbolt
Display port machines (pre 2011 MBPros, 2010 Air, pre 2011 Minis, etc)
correct?

AirPlay Mirroring, iMessage reportedly headed to OS X [video]

Sent to you by Bill Boulware via Google Reader: AirPlay Mirroring,
iMessage reportedly headed to OS X [video] via BGR: The Three Biggest
Letters In Tech by Zach Epstein on 10/31/11

The eventual arrival of iMessage on OS X, in some form, is almost a
foregone conclusion at this point, but a new report claims to confirm
that Apple is indeed working on bringing it to the Mac platform
alongside AirPlay Mirroring. Citing multiple anonymous sources, 9to5
Mac says Apple is already hard at work bringing the services to OS X,
though it is apparently unclear whether or not the efforts will bear
fruit. AirPlay Mirroring will theoretically allow OS X users to mirror
their Mac display wirelessly to an Apple TV while iMessage will let
users carry on conversations from Mac computers just as they can now
with the iPhone, iPod touch or iPad. The report says Apple is also
currently debating whether or not iMessage should be integrated into
Apple̢۪s iChat app or introduced as a standalone app, and a concept
video of how the latter scenario might work follows below.
