Well... at least Steve Jobs' Mac products are now so accessible for people who are blind / low vision, that we can use them off the shelf as opposed to having to add on expensive screen readers / magnifiers. Can't say that for Bill Gates' Microsoft products.

Since when does a successful person have to be a saint? This
politically correct generation is the first to get lost in minutiae
while losing the big picture. History will remember Henry Ford more
for his automotive contributions than his well-published tracts on
anti-semitism. The man was a raging racist, but he built a huge
empire that had even greater impact on society than did Jobs, by
essentially enabling a mobile society.

What's the value in dissecting these personal aspects of character?

It's interesting to see that when you step away from the whole
Jobs/Apple thing, the most admirable quality isn't the operating
system, the machines or company; it's the fact that one man's vision
can still overcome corporate inertia and win.

Personally, I'm a big fan of "one man against the system" stories.
When I watch movies about clever prison escapes, I always root for
the inmate that outthinks the system to win back his liberty -- often
forgetting that what got the guy into the can in the first place was
murder or robbery.

Apple issues updates fixing iPhoto, QuickTime, Lion Recovery and Thu

http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/9To5Mac-MacAllDay/~3/aj4yMrpAmVE/

Sent to you by Bill Boulware via Google Reader: Apple issues updates
fixing iPhoto, QuickTime, Lion Recovery and Thunderbolt Mac issues via
9to5Mac by Christian Zibreg on 10/27/11

Apple late yesterday released half a dozen updates addressing issues
with iPhoto, QuickTime for Windows, Lion Internet Recovery and
Thunderbolt on Mac computers. The iPhoto 9.2.1 update fixed unexpected
quits caused by the 3ivxVIdeoCodec plug-in while QuickTime 7.7.1 for
Windows squashed a number of security flaws allowing maliciously
crafted movie files to compromise your Windows box. 9to5Mac recently
reported of displeasing Thunderbolt-related issues causing random
blanking out of an attached Apple Thunderbolt Display.

Apple fixed these, too, while improving reliability of Thunderbolt
Target Disk Mode performance. Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI)
updates also addressed problems with Lion Recovery from an Internet
connection. Thunderbolt updates are available by choosing Software
Update from the Mac menu, unlike the updated iPhoto which is deployed
via the Mac App Store client. Release notes after the break…

iPhoto 9.2.1 [357.18MB]
What’s New in iPhoto 9.2.1
Addresses an issue that could cause iPhoto to quit unexpectedly on Macs
with the 3ivxVideoCodec plug-in installed

Included in version 9.2

Addresses compatibility with iCloud and iOS 5
Left and right swipe gestures can now be used to navigate between
photos in Magnify (1-up) view
Previously imported photos are now displayed in a separate section of
the Import window
Book/calendar themes and card categories can now be selected using a
pop-up menu in the carousel view
Resolves an issue that could cause some pages of books to print
incorrectly
Rebuilding a library now correctly preserves saved slideshows and books
This update is recommended for all users of iPhoto ’11.
QuickTime for Windows 7.7.1 [37.58MB]
QuickTime 7.7.1 improves security and is recommended for all QuickTime
7 users on Windows. For information on the security content of this
update, please visit this website: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1222.

Sanity check on advice related to HP 6200 series printer

Posted by: "John Richardson" richards@spawar.navy.mil

Thu Oct 27, 2011 9:58 am (PDT)

Hello,

I was asked to provide advice recently on a HP 6200 printer. The advice I
suggested was to update the drivers. Is there a better or more efficient
method?

I did not see the configurations in person and the problem statement is from
memory. I know it is not Lion. It is either Leopard or Snow Leopard. I can
acquire more details if necessary.

The Problem: There are 2 printers connected to a Macbook air. One [HP 7XXX
series] is in an office in NJ. The other is in an office in the FL and is the
6200 that is causing trouble [will not print].

The Macbook Air was updated by Apple store personnel in NJ and prints using
the 7XXX series printer. Then the Macbook Air was subsequently updated in FL
by Apple store personnel. After the southeast upgrade the 6200 ceased
printing.

My advice was to update drivers as stated above. Just doing a sanity check on
the advice.

Lastly, the Macbook Air owner is thinking of getting a new printer.
Suggestions are welcome.

Wanted ENET thin coax->RJ45 adapter

Posted by: "Bill B." bill501@mindspring.com   kernos501

Thu Oct 27, 2011 8:28 am (PDT)

When I search for these or BNC->RJ45, I come up with a lot of stuff for video. Can anyone suggest a product? BNC should be male.

I now have it on a hub with a BNC plus a splitter with one end terminated. I assume I would still have to terminate the coax side, if I can find an adapter to RJ45.

TIA,

Bill

Howdy.

MacMall and other online retail places will have coax cables and
terminator plugs and BNC based networking items and RJ45 to coax
adapters. I think the cost seems to be going up for coax things.

<http://www.macmall.com>

For an excellent online source for high quality cables and connectors
of all kinds, check into Blue Jeans Cable. In addition the Blue Jeans
Cable web site has interesting and extra and good info on cabling
issues, networking issues, that can be very helpful.

Blue Jeans has a section just for adapters of all kinds.

<http://www.bluejeanscable.com/index.htm>

Look at some of the Beldon type cables or Beldon rated cabling if you
want a product that IMO is extra trustworthy, made to high standards,
and high quality requirements. Beldon is a company that began in 1902
and is known for quality products but often used by industry groups
like the old US Bell System which installed phone products designed to
last for decades and not for a year or two.

Looked here, but it reminded me that I"m looking for an outlet that has
the mini TOSlink audio adapters for most of the desktop digital audio

Have you found any Dan?

Try MacMall. I'm not knowledgeable on TOSlink at all but MacMall has
TOSlink and mini TOSlink items available.

Some items like this tend to not be in stock but have to be ordered.

Also try Amazon.com.

MPEG-2 video component?

Posted by: "DaveC" davec2468@yahoo.com   davec2468

Thu Oct 27, 2011 10:31 am (PDT)

I'm using MPEG Streamclip and attempting to export to DVD video from
.avi files.

I see no option for DVD (MPEG-2) format export, and in the manual for
Streamclip it says that this format is dependent on the Apple MPEG-2
QT component.

I have a faint memory of having purchased this a few years ago, and a
disk search turned up this:

AppleMPEG2Codec.component

in the Library>Quicktime folder.

Is this the component that is required? (Get Info says it's version
1.0.2) Why does not Streamclip recognize it?

Thanks,
Dave

iPhone ear bud Recommendations?

Howdy.

I need to get someone a new iPhone ear bud set. the guy has gone
through about 6 of them in the past 12 months I'd guess. He uses them
daily and then wraps them tightly and stuffs in a pocket at work.

I almost never use ear buds so my couple of sets have been "borrowed"
and . . . . . done in -- like the others.

Any suggestions for good quality, durable, long lasting ear buds?

Ones with good sound? That don't fall apart?

Hi Dan,
I use v-moda that are red. I use them every day on my Itouch, and also on
my Ipad if I have to l.isten to something. They have buttons up near the top
that I can use to pause, or make louder or softer.

i had an older model V -moda that i used for years, but they wouldn't work
on the ipad..just the itouch, and didn't have those controls. Hubie is using
them for his itouch.

There are many cheaper brands, but this brand is the only one that doesn't
hurt my ears and doesn't fall out. They come with several size tips.

Unless you like to keep it in a pocket with diamond rings you haven't sold yet, or some such.

The Gorilla Glass front that you wold be protecting is harder and more durable than anything you could put over it to "protect" it, and the oleophobic coating sheds skin oils very nicely.

I occasionally wipe mine on the front of my t-shirt, and after 15 months it looks like new.

You don't need one. Which is why Apple stopped selling them.

However, you may want a protective sleeve or carrying case. This is
my favorite company for those sorts of things:

I got this skin for only $8:

and this leather case for $10:

I switch off between the two, and both are high quality. You can't
beat the prices.

2007 Mac Pro USB Wireless adapter

Anybody have or know of a good USB wireless adapter for an older Mac
Pro - ideally one that uses the Mac wireless client. I've used a few
in the past with mixed results but they all used their own client. I
know that I could install an airport card but that's a serious hassle
from what I remember.

Any advice?

Thanks,
-Dane
