I look for objectivity and credibility in a review. I have to say, in view of many posts on this very list, that the review of the 4S is somewhere between optimistic and fawning. Sorry, nothing is this perfect. We know there have been problems with battery life. We know that some people are having difficulty with Siri. I don't really understand that, since I have Siri as a separate application on my 3GS and it works fine for whatever i ask it to do. I don't need it to remind me to take an umbrella, call my mother or dance the hoochy-koochy.

I've singled out the above comment as an example. While it may indeed be the best camera the reviewer has ever used, it doesn't begin to hold a candle to the Nokia N-series. I've seen photos from the 4S and am not impressed. Much would be correctible in Photoshop using levels, but the shots seems darkish and lacklustre to my eye. Here is an example of the image quality, for instance from the Nokia N8. It was used by the Aardman (Wallace and Grommit) folks to shoot the largest stop-motion ever. It's life-size, and the image quality is startlingly good, rivaling my Nikon DSLR. I understand this is an Apple iPhone list and I love it. But again, objectivity and credibility. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ieN2vhslTTU It's a very entertaining video, and there's a "making of" that's remarkable.

I appreciate the time and trouble it took to write the review. No, really! But it did seem a tad breathless, and failed to warn of already known problems. That's doing no one any favors, except maybe Apple.

I think of a review as pros and cons of a product. Take your review quote: "The camera on the iPhone 4S is the best camera I have ever used on a mobile device." it doesn't say why they think it was the best they've ever owned. A good review will, imho, will have "because" statements and examples of why they think as they do about a product. Your comparing the Nokia to the iPhone was a good comparison. Comparing the iPhone to a DSLR is not. A DSLR is a much better camera if one knows how to use one. I don't remember in the keynote Apple comparing the 4s camera picture quality to any other cell camera picture quality. Seems one could say that the 4s camera is the best of all the iPhones cameras. I thought the 4 camera was a great camera for a cellphone camera until the 4s came out. I have yet to upgrade to the 4s. I have a 4. Still, I take my canon 50D with me on photo walks or when I know I'm going to be able to get some good shots. I use my iPhone camera when I want to take a quick pic and tweet it.

It seems Apple wants us to use a me.com addy with them. I got a MobileMe account when I bought my first Mac so I've used it with Apple ever since. I didn't have the problem of a gmail account linked to my iTunes account and then getting iCoud with a new iTunes account using me.com and having to figure out if I can merge my 2 accounts. I think it's something Apple has to look into.

When I created my @me address after getting ios 5 I don't think it was really turned into another apple ID per se. When I log into apple and go to
Manage my account, it lists my primary account and ID as the gmail account I set up with iTunes around February , and the new @me address as a secondary email.

Since you had a gmail account used with iTunes, then naturally it would be set as your primary account....at least to my way of thinking. It's the "oh gee, now I have 2 email accounts, what am I going to do" people that want to merge everything into 1 account. Sure, 1 account is easier to manage but managing 2 accounts is easy to manage. Just remember which account you use for iTunes and which you use for iCloud. My problem is that my gmail doesn't sync with iCloud so that no matter which device I read mail from, the mail gets deleted from all my devices as I delete from one of the devices. I don't know if iCloud just doesn't work that way or if I've got something not set right.

If you can log into iCloud with both the gmail apple ID and a @me account, what's the difference which one you use for iTunes and which you use of iCloud?

Good question David. I've seen many ask how to have one login for both accounts. I'm with you, what does it matter.

Does anyone know why in the Reminders app it lists long strings of letters and numbers sometimes? I can delete them when I go into edit but I have no idea why they keep appearing.

That's possible, maybe for the sake of simplicity I kept it the same if that option was there.

Yes it does, thanks. In my case the only apple device I have is the iPhone so I can't really take advantage of having something go to "all your devices" as it were. But I like the idea of having my iPhone stuff backed up in the air nevertheless...lol.

Thanks. Usually I get the idea my explanations don't make sense LOL For me, 1 device to sync would be easier than 2. As it is, my iPad seems to get every app my iPhone downloads. There's no way to tell my iPhone to sync only with my iMac and not with my iPad. It's a pain. I don't know of a solution at this time.

It doesn't seem to matter if I have iCloud turned on or off, the iTunes sync doesn't complete. Any ideas?

Let her create her own account without credit card. You can search the net on how to do that. Then just gift her any app she needs that isn't free.
