wireless sync: where's the music?
Posted by: "sniffermanmi" sniffermanmi@yahoo.com sniffermanmi
Sat Oct 29, 2011 5:00 am (PDT)
I have succeeded in setting up wireless syncing on my iPhone 4. But now, I have to ask...what, exactly, is being synced?
I have a smart playlist for Coldplay in iTunes, and all of that Coldplay music has been synced to my phone. Yesterday, I downloaded the new Coldplay album. When I performed a wireless sync, the new album did not transfer to my phone.
Sorry if this is a dumb question, but is music supposed to be part of the syncing process? Is there a setting I need to change to include new music downloads?
While I'm at it...can I un-sync a smart playlist from my phone, or add one from iTunes, wirelessly? How?
Thanks, everybody!

> It is an Apple Store process, you have to have the miro-pentalobe
screwdriver
It is an arms race between Apple and the third party shops. They can gain a few weeks at best by changing the screws - but type "micro-pentalobe" and dozens of sources ranging from $3 to $7 show up. Overnight shipping at additional charge.
There is nothing new in this, or unique to Apple. Weird screws have always been a tactic to keep people out of consumer goods - and it always fails for the exact same reason: third parties will always be out there with tools very quickly.
With a bit of prowess, anybody can take a file to the shaft of an existing tool and come up with a micro-pentalobe on their own, or at least something that will get the screws out. That is what I did. It took about five minutes with a file designed for precision work.

I don't see signature in the user guide for iOS 5, but if you go back to the user guide for iOS 4.3
"Add a signature to your messages: Choose Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Signature, then type a signature."
How he is getting multiple signatures for different accounts is beyond me, as for a non-jailbroken iPhone 3GS, you are given only one option to set up a signature that is applied to all your email accounts.
It is possible that this feature was temporarily dropped in iOS 5.0, but that is just a W.A.G.

wifi not working on iphone but working on netbook in the same house.

At home I have wifi. My netbook picks it up just fine but as of yesterday (at least that's when I first noticed it) my 3gs iPhone is only using 3G! In the upper left shows 5 bars, AT&T and 3G. I go into settings and select wifi, which already shows my wifi's i.d. as being on, I touch that and am brought to the "choose a network" page and all that happens is the hourglass or refresh circle continues to revolve at my wifi's i.d. When i touch the arrow it has "forget this network" at the top and below that it shows the ip address and subnet mask. The remainder of the items are not filled in, but I've never had to do that before so I don't want to make things worse by guessing what to enter. I turned off my phone (all the way) for over a half hour and it's still the same. Please help! I can't think of what else to do. Thank you for your assistance.

One possibility to try is:
iPhone - Settings - General - Reset - "Reset Network Settings"

IOS 5 missing feature: easy notification sounds off
Posted by: "Betsy Schwartz" betsys@gmail.com betsys99
Sat Oct 29, 2011 9:35 am (PDT)
In my job I am on-call one week out of five, and I get notified by
phone call. I used to be able to go to sleep with the phone volume on
high and set "notifications off" with one button, and that way the
phone call would wake me but I would not get random bloops and bleeps
and 3am "your opponent has played a turn" messages. NOW, I can't find
a one-button toggle, and the only way to have the phone ring but not
the messages is to go in and turn every type of noise off
individually. Which is a pain, which means I will end up not using
noise notifications.
Is there a way to turn off notification sounds in less than a few
dozen clicks now?

Look for the app Videos. Apple decided to fix something that wasn't broken by breaking up audio and video from the ipod app. Notice that what used to be ipod is no just Music.

Seems odd that Apple would do this when iPod is one of their signature products.

1. Apple is odd. This is news to you?
2. "iPod" is the name of a physical device. It has certain capabilities.
The iPhone is a *different* device. It has, in general, greater capabilities and flexibility.
It is hardly surprising that some capabilities are found categorized differently on the more flexible devise(s).

I think it's very surprising, Jim. Ipod and the ipod name belong to Apple, why not use it on the iPhone? Oh yeah, they did up until the software update.

I guess you were NOT one of the people loudly complaining not so long ago that Apple had lumped EVERYthing under one roof, and why don't they separate music and audio under one heading, like "Music" from movies and videos under another heading, like "Video", from Apps, and from Books...?

Neither Apple, not I, nor, I am sure MANY others, feel it *is* a "stupid" change.
A new user (and there are MILLIONS of them) sits down with their NEW Apple product. What is the most likely thing they think of to play a video?
1. "iPod" ?
2. "Videos" ?
[3. "Siri" ?]

IMO you are right. It made perfect sense that all the "iPod" functions were
included in the "iPod" app on the iPhone. Splitting off the video function
into a separate app made no sense and, even if it did, how does *keeping*
Podcasts under "Music" make sense?

The strange thing, though, is that the change only made the iPhone consistent with the iPod Touch, which had music and video split to begin with.

Audio would probably be the more proper term, since video podcasts are sent to video.

Battery Life Problems via The iPhone FAQ - Information about the Apple
iPhone by Bob Bhatnagar on 10/29/11
Apple is currently investigating reported battery life problems
experienced by iPhone 4S users. There are many tips and tricks floating
around about how to extent battery life on your iPhone, but you
shouldn't have to shut down most of the useful functions of your device
to get battery life back. Normally these problems are due to specific
bugs or corrupted files in the iPhone firmware or applications (this
happened with the iPhone 4.1 update).
Apple will often issue a fix in the next iOS update, however in the
meantime iPhone users must do what they can to solve the problem or
deal with abbreviated battery time. There are many general tips and
tricks that can improve battery life on your iPhone, but these involve
much compromise and will switch off many features of your iPhone. In
the past specific apps such as Ping and Game Center were pegged as
culprits. The flood of feedback from users of the iPhone 4S point to
