Well said Hester!
Thank you. I will go and read the 'article' now and write a comment or
'letter to the editor' pertaining to it. I'm sure it's nasty enough,
considering the source!

Maybe I'm missing something, but I didn't take it as such an attack. It appears she's just reporting what's in the book, and much of what she wrote was already revealed on 60 Minutes. Yes, it points out his darker side, but that seems to be all the buzz right now anyway.
The article is available online.

Well, the book is full of a lot of positives about him. This was 100% negatory. just my 2.

I feel the same. He did have a dark side. Don't most people of genius? Think of the other artists in history, many were quite batty in one way or another. It seems to come with the territory.

Yup -Dowd pretty much used the material straight out of the book - and I'm really not surprised. Jobs was a brilliant, creative, manic (possibly bi-polar), perfectionist who was heavily influenced by the counter-culture and it showed in his products as well as his private life. Good news / bad news. I've heard it said that Bill Gates has a certain mild degree of autistic / asperger's. He's also managed quite well.

Has anyone read the book? I'm curious if we've now hit the hot spots on TV and in the news or if I should go ahead and buy the book?

I am on the 3rd chapter of the ebook. I am going to purchase the
hardcover just to add it to my library.
Superb detail on Job's young years, especially during school. He tested
out at a 10th grade level while he was in 4th grade. The school system
wanted to skip him 2 grades, but his parents only allowed one grade
level. As it was, he had a problem with peers, being as smart as he was.

That's a Windows OS question [:)]
Many of us use Windows for various reasons, but the focus of the group
is the Mac and other elements of the Apple ecosystem. There are Windows
mailing lists and almost certainly Windows security Yahoo groups where
you'd have a much better chance of getting help.
This won't help you get rid of Kapersky, but my advice, once you manage
to do so, would be not to install Free AVG but rather Microsoft's own
"Microsoft Security Essentials." It runs on XP. It won't try desperately
to get you to purchase a fee-based product every year by hiding the free
download page; it won't bloat the installation with Internet Explorer
toolbars that send you to a search provider you don't want. It just
works.

This may not be of help now, however, I usually install Windows on the
Bootcamp partition. Then, I can use this install to run either
Parallels, Fusion, or straight PC. If I have an issue with software, I
can always boot straight into Windows, using Bootcamp, and the issue is
usually quickly resolved that way. Afterward, I can resume my use of
Fusion or Parallels, normally.

I recommend you look at Virgin Mobile if it is available in your area.
UNLIMITED data, 300 minutes voice, unlimited text for $35/month and no junk
fees. VM is the MVNO of Sprint. They have two really good smartphones -
the LG Optimus V (for about $100 on sale) or the Moto Triumph (4.3" screen,
$300). Both are really nice phones and run Android 2.2. And, a very simple
process to enable (free) wifi tethering. With integrated voice actions and
third-party apps, you won't even miss Siri. For another $10/month, you can
add Line2 and have unlimited calling.

Depends upon which version of the OS they ship with. A Mac can't boot
from an OS disc that is earlier than the version it ships with, unless
that's changed over the last 6 months.

Bill,
Funny, my iMac shipped with 10.6.4. I've tried booting with lower
versions, including the original $30 10.6 upgrade disc, and the machine
won't start. The gear spins and spins, but no boot. If I use any disc
that is bootable with 10.6.4, the machine starts right up. I had to
update Diskwarrior to a new boot disc so I could just use it.
Alsoft offers a free update service to folks who have discs that won't
boot because of OS versions and releases.

Harry, I can't speak as to pre Leopard as my first mac was an iMac that
shipped with Leopard I bought when Snow Leopard came out and only ran
Leopard for a few days until Best Buy got more copies of Snow Leopard (which
was free with Mac purchase).
I have bought several Mac Minis and two Airs since and I recently bought a
2011 Lion Mini to use as a Server for an office that came with Lion and I
was able to boot it, format hard drive and install Snow Leopard Server with
the unopened disk that came with the 2010 Mini Server I have at home (which
is running Lion after I upgraded from Snow Leopard which had been formatted
and installed over Snow Leopard Server).

You might have misunderstood what I was referring to. I have a mid-2010
iMac that shipped with 10.6.4. If I try to start with any release of
the OS below that, 10.6.3 or lower, the machine will not start. It has
to be 10.6.4 or greater.
The iMac I had before that came with 10.4.8 or so.. I forget at this
point. I could not boot with a lower release of the operating system.
The machine would not start. It would sit at the spinning gear forever
if I let it.
I had a release of Diskwarrior that had an earlier boot than 10.6.4 and
could not use it. Alsoft replaced the disc with a newer one, for nothing.
I started early on in the OS X days, not during the public beta, but
during one of the first commercial releases. Prior to that, I used
System 8, I believe it was. I had a clone back when Apple did it's
'licensing thing'.

PBS will take an unflinching, in-depth look at the influences on Steve Jobs
character and career in the one-hour documentary *Steve Jobs One Last
Thing*, which is set to premiere Nov. 2 at 10 p.m. ET (check local
listings). According to the announcement, the documentary features
interviews with, among others: Ronald Wayne, co-founder of Apple with Jobs
and Steve Wozniak; Ross Perot, who invested in NeXT Computer when Jobs was
running out of money; Walt Mossberg, principal technology columnist for *The
Wall Street Journal*, who interviewed Jobs every year from 2003-2010;
will.i.am, frontman and producer for The Black Eyed Peas, whose I Gotta
Feeling currently ranks as the most downloaded iTunes song ever; Dean
Hovey, designer of the original mouse for Apple; Robert Cringely, writer and
host of the PBS series *Triumph of the Nerds: The Rise of Accidental Empires
*; Robert Palladino, calligraphy professor at Reed College, whose classes
Jobs credited with inspiring his typography design for the Mac; and Bill
Fernandez, who introduced Jobs and Wozniak in Sunnyvale, where the three
hung out in his fathers garage and tinkered with electronics.
It also includes footage from a never-before-broadcast interview with Jobs
in 1994, when he shared his philosophy on life: You tend to get told that
the world is the way it is, but life can be much broader once you discover
one simple fact; and that is that everything around you that you call life
was made up by people no smarter than you Once you learn that, youll
never be the same again.
The documentary takes its name from Jobs penchant for appearing to reach
the end of a presentation, before saying Oh one more thing and revealing
his latest design

Tough link to follow, I get through reading a couple of sentences of the
doc's description, and the page refreshes to a comment page. Tried this
several times with the first link above and it happens consistently.
Not sure about other browsers, I'm using Firefox currently.
