Niifty apps

I went to the mac app store and typed in Kindle. It was there along with kobo and nook, I only like free books. There are plenty at both the kindle and kobo web sites and both work well with the iPad2. If anyone can make the nook work please tell me how. I just wanted to pass this along.

I, unfortunately, bought a Nook last year. B&N has many free books, however, they are not very good. Most booksellers have free stuff. Do a search on 'free books' and you will find them.

I use the Nook Study App on my Mac. It works fine. It says it is for
textbook, but it works fine or normal ebooks also.

Thanks Gijzette. I was only finding the Kindle app in the Mac App Store.

Yes, emoticons have evolved. I texted my high school senior son and used the emoticon ;)
He was quick to respond that I shouldn't use that emoticon because it means "DTF". I responded "?"
He responded "I'll tell you tonight".
I looked it up and was aghast. Who knew?

As a frequent emoticon user, I appreciate knowing that. To me it was
merely a smile and a wink.

I'd say it is a devolution, not an evolution!

But, I do appreciate knowing that small fact. It will keep me from
inadvertently offending.

There are 42 definitions of this acronym, of which 6 may apply. Which one made you aghast?

Apparently it was the TV Trash definition.

It could be anything, however, I looked it up on <http://www.acronymfinder.com/>, which for the uninitiated is a Acronym Finder site. Total *known* acronyms from this site for these three letters is 42 and then they broke it down to subgroups. I assumed it was in the last sub group, but really do not know. However, here again, Mr. Nada, I did not see a TV Trash definition. However, that is okay because this thread has gone to far any ways. Any further enlightenment should be made directly to me and not this group, please!

A quick web search brought up a reference to Jersey Shores or whatever the program is called and referred to Snooky giving "Down to (fornicate)" as the meaning.

TV Trash is the new Trailer Trash.

Fellows:

I have asked more than a few questions to members in this group. Talented and knowledgeable people like Randy who offer help are a great asset for following this group on a regular basis. This holds true whether one asks questions or just reads the words of the wise, or can from time-to-time offer some assistance, it is a great "community" of Mac users.

My own practice is in a rural area in which, aside from public schools, is a "sea" of windows users and the nearest Apple store is about 90 minutes away. The point being there is no help locally and thus getting any advise/help is usually by phone or internet. While Apple Care is a big help, I've been quite thankful for some of the insights and knowledge that is offered by our esteemed members.

I recently had a problem with a new version of a windows excel file that baffled me as well as the folks at Apple and even at Microsoft. It was about a month worth of research and I did ask Randy directly about the problem when all other avenues were dead ends.

While I don't consider this group to be "Mac First Responders" I have found that when all else has failed there are some very experienced and smart folks who contribute here.

Thanks to all of you!

John

Randy: In 20+ years of Mac experience, I have had one detected virus. It was the old "Windows Definition" WDEF virus, which I loaded myself from a floppy to test some Norton virus detection software.

Thanks for your reference to all known Mac malware. Keep up the good work!

Cheers!

I remember that virus...never had it. I've been using Macs since 1986, and have never had any sort of virus, worm, trojan horse, or anything else. (I've never used any sort of anti-virus software.)

For those who want more information, John was sent an Excel file with
"lots of embedded macros" and was told that it wasn't working for him
because "the Mac can't handle that."

I don't recall your telling me, John, did my suggestion to try the
demo of Office 2011 work? Or did you find some other solution?

Let me just say that having Activity Monitor running can tell you a lot.
Click on the CPU column as Randy said, then drag the window into the bottom
right corner of your screen so that just the first 3 columns and the top 3
rows of processes are visible (the rest are off-screen). When you have a
problem it can be hard even to get anything running, AM included, but if
it's already there you have a good chance of seeing what's hogging CPU.

You might even put it your Login Items.

My pleasure, Vickie! I'm glad that I could be of assistance.

If you could give us more information as to which of the things that
I suggested that you did, and give us a guess as to which one might
have done the trick, that would be very helpful for the next person
that has this problem.

My experience is that Adobe Flash causes the spinning beachball
problem the most often.

I've always used Entourage until about a month ago. One thing I don't seem able to do in Mail.app is send attachments "clipped" to the message so that the filename but not an image of the file itself appears in the body of the message. Is there a way to do this in Mail?

> I'm new this week to Lion. I used to use Expose to flip back to my desktop. All the open windows would conveniently slide off the screen so I could access my Hard Drive, and my photo folders which live on the desktop. Now when I use Expose to slide the open windows off, they don't slide off, but I get all the open windows, plus the old desktop still on the screen, but over a brand new, gray canvas-like desktop, and I can't even see my Hard Drive or the folders that used to be on the old desktop. I assume this is normal for Lion.

Open System Preferences - Mission Control.

You will see that the default key combination for "Show Desktop" is <F11> (on my laptop, <fn><F11>).

If you click on "Hot Corners...", you can assign Desktop to one of the corners.

Seems that we are the only ones who use iPhoto on this list, therefore I will answer your question. In iPhoto 11 (which for some strange reason is in fact v. 9, mine is 9.2.1) you should be able to enter the title under the photo. You can also click on the stars under the photo to assign the photo rating.
