This might help. I've never used it, but then again, I've never had to convert .ra files before either.

Not easily on Macs. Slightly, easier on Windows. Someone else may have a better answers, but if this helps...

".ra" is a "Real Audio" file. Real Audio is a complex format with "strong" DRM and until recently, very proprietary. Often the file itself does not contain data, but rather a reference to a stream. You may need to be online to even play the file.

You might try VLC with FFMPEG installed. Maybe QT7 Pro with Perian and/or FFMPEG can convert. Not sure.

Any audio file (even streams) can be "re-captured" during playback using applications that can re-record the "output" of your system, or using screen capture software like Screenflow or even Quicktime X was has a screen capture utility. There are dedicated programs for this, mosty used for re-recording Intenet "radio" streams. Many audio recording apps can record whatever you send to your speaker outputs. The Open Source app "Audacity" can do this, though that's a pretty complicated program for someone not familiar with audio recording apps.

Howdy.

The following instructions might do the conversion job.

I think the .ram file format extension is for Real Media streaming
files.

I think the .rm file format extension is for Real Media files that have
been downloaded.

Note that the current version of RealPlayer (I have version 12.0.0)
comes with a converter application provided by the Real Media folks. I
just tried it but it didn't seem to do much so may have serious
restrictions on type of Real file that can be converted. It seems to
be primarily aimed at converting a Real file of some type into a
portable device format for things like iPods, iPhone, iPad, Apple TV,
Blackberries, HTC, Motorola Droid, Zune (Zune??).

Real Media can also be very difficult to work with due to DRM (Digital
Rights Management) restrictions.

You should be able to record streaming Real files with something like
Audio Hijack.

There is a tried and true way to convert RealMedia videos and probably
just audio in the same format to an .avi file format.

I have not tried the following conversion process in Mac OS X 10.7 Lion
but I think it will be the same. Your mileage may vary.

Convert Real audio and video into MP3 and AVI file formats.

1. ffmpegX.
- mencoder
- mplayer

Download and install ffmpegX, mencoder, and mplayer. This is a 3 part
download.
You must then follow the install guideline exactly.

2. Real Player.

Download and install Real Player. Should be at Real.com.

3. Make a new folder on Desktop and name it "reallib." (without the
quote marks, it means Real Lib).

4. Real Player in Applications folder.

- Do a control click (or right click) on the RealPlayer.app
application file in Applications. RealPlayer is a "package" type of
file.

- Pick Show Package Contents from the pop up menu.

- Go into Contents and keep drilling down to:

Contents > Frameworks > HXClientKit.framework >Helix Plugins > Codecs

- Copy all of the items in Codecs and paste them into the reallib
folder you made on your Desktop.
NOTE: COPY and Paste. Do not MOVE the codecs.

There may be 10 to 14 codec items. In my current RealPlayer ver.
12.0.0 there are 12.

5. reallib folder.

Move the reallib folder from Desktop into:

/Library/Applications Support/ffmpegX

This Library folder is the one at top level of hard drive. It is not
your user account/Library folder and is not your System/Library folder.

6. use ffmpegX application for conversion.

ffmpegX works by drag n drop. Drag something to convert into left hand
small window. Then use the right hand small window and find a format
to convert to. You may have to explore and experiment with this and
with finding the right file format for conversion. Try the ffmpegX web
site first for help.

I like to use SnapZ Pro for things like that. It's $69. At work, on PCs, we use Camtasia, though I see that the Mac version doesn't get top ratings at MacUpdate. It's $99. Captivate has quite a learning curve and costs $799.

Questions for Giving my MBP to a friend for Christmas?

Posted by: "harpangel36" harpangel36@yahoo.com   harpangel36

Mon Dec 5, 2011 8:09 am (PST)

I will be giving my mid 2009 MBP to a good friend for Christmas and will be getting a new MBP. I am wondering a few things.

1.What is the best way to transfer from one MBP to another? There are some applications I don't want to transfer.
2. I have VMfusion with windows 7 on my current MBP. Can I transfer that over to the new one, if I decide I still need it?
3. All of the apps I have purchased, (pages, keynote, aperture, etc.) Can I leave them on for her and then reinstall from the Apple store on my new one?
Is there anything I should know that might be important in giving this as a gift to my friend?

Thanks, Roxanne

See Apple's "Migration Assistant." Already on your machine. Can selectively transfer users, apps, etc... but see below.

Sure but make sure you are properly "deactivating" you VMFusion and particularly your Windows license. Not sure about VMFusion. May not need to bother. But you do want to deactivate Windows from that machine. You can get away with at least three activations before things might get tricky, but no point in leaving "activations" behind.

Legally, probably not. Most apps are licensed for one person or one machine. Practically, it's probably not a problem if they are App Store apps. I think App Store allows five installations.

You should wipe your data once you are done transferring. Do a complete backup first using Carbon Copy Cloner (or backup app of choice). You can use a Time Machine backup for the transfer, but I would not use this as your backup, backup because you will want to use this drive for your new machine and therefor won't keep the backup.

I would reinstall from original discs, formatting the disc first.

File Conversion with Command Line Utilities & Automator

I have tried this and it doesn't work.

Something is missing, some step is left out, there may be an assumption
by the article writer that I should automatically know some step that
is not mentioned.

If anyone has looked at this or tried this, please write here and say
if it worked and what made it work.

By copy, what do you mean? Are you saying that you do not have a EPSON Scan driver. I am using Lion along with EPSON Scan.app V3.01and works for me. There is a driver, but go here to find out how to get it:

Avoiding "Dog" Mac Models

Posted by: "Eric" emanmb@yahoo.com   emanmb

Mon Dec 5, 2011 12:42 pm (PST)

My wife and I are moving to the other side of the planet next year and we need upgraded Macs from our present models; she has a Powerbook 12" 1ghz and I am limping along with a dog of a 2.0 G5 tower.

My wife is happy with her G4 but for anyone else stuck and unable to upgrade beyond 10.5.8, you know what issues are going on there and will only get worse. So to keep current with browsing, she'll be wanting an intel laptop, and I'm directing her towards the 13" Macbook Pro line.

I've had 2 of these G5's and both were dogs. The first one's power supply died and the 2nd one that I'm using now has issues with audio, Quicktime and pretty much any video playback. iTunes will stop spontaneously, will also do so whenever I use another app while playing something in itunes, namely songs, etc, etc. My travails are well documented in posts in this group if one cares to read them. Since it hasn't caught on fire yet, I'll tolerate it's problems till I can get some flavor of a Mac Pro.

We'll be buying used units, as we can't afford new so my question is, of the Macbook Pro line, is there one model that stands out as a good performer? I'm open to any model, but will probably stick to the 13" size as my wife likes that.
The same question applies to the Mac Pro's as to which one/s do well or have a poor track record. Also is there a site that has info like this? I've already googled
"best mac models",
"mac performance guide",
"mac quality guide",
"mac dependability guide/chart" and appledefects.com is a non-site now w/no new posts since '09.

Thanks in advance!

Eric

I don't know what you mean by "other side of the planet," but don't
neglect to take customs duties in your mind. Would it be cheaper to
wait until you move or to buy and then move with the new computers?
If you are moving TO the US that might be a reason to buy after your
move, as computers are generally cheaper here in the USA since most
other countries have value added taxes. I remember once on eBay
shipping a G4 iMac (Yes, it was that long ago) to Australia as the
buyer thought my eBay price was cheaper than he could get it, even
though shipping cost him about $300 or so, as I recall.

That is something we're looking into as well, but Bangkok doesn't have the Craigslist user base like we do here in the US making the purchase of used gear much easier. BKK prices for new gear are 15% more or so than in US for new. =\
Given that the gear will be used, I am assuming at this point that the duties etc won't be too bad...but we'll be looking into it.

I accidentally erased a bunch of pictures from my camera's card. Can someone recommend an app that can retrieve the missing files?

I have another card that I have temporarily subbed for the regular card, so there will not be any chance of an overwrite.

Also camera-related, I used to be able to import picture files to my earlier Sonies and be able to view them on the camera. That does not now seem to be the case. My camera registers --I'm using the substitute card-- that a file has been brought in, however it won't show it.

Is there a new file-import trick that I don't know about? Thanx. Oneal

No personal experience, but I'm pretty sure such an app is listed
somewhere on this site:

If I seem vague, I used this site to help choose a camera in 2004 and
haven't been on it much since!

PhotoRec (free) is command line (Terminal) but easy to use. I tried it a
while ago and it worked really well. (I hadn't lost any photos. I
deliberately erased an SD card as a test.)

iTunes Match --- Cover Art on Other Devices

Hi,

I did iTunes match and had no problem. The songs and playlists show up on my other devices, including the iPad, iPhone and a MacBook Pro. It is nice.

However, the cover art doesn't show up, or at least not all of it. Or rather, most of it.

Anyone know how to fix that problem?

Thanks!

This is a fairly common problem. It is due to a timing issue between
Mail
and certain ISP's. Mail gives your account password before your ISP's
server is ready for it. When the server is finally ready for it, the
password has already been given, and the server must request it again.

There is a potential work-around for the problem here:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1662481

"...[go] into the Keychain application, located in the Utilities
folder. In the upper left column, highlight "log-in." In the lower
left column, highlight "passwords." In the right window scroll until
you find your "mail.comcast.net and smtp.comcast.net" or whatever your
internet service provider incoming/outgoing mail servers are called.
Double click on each which will bring up an attributes/access control
window. Select access control. Then select the bullet next to "allow
all applications to access this item." Make sure you do this for both
the incoming server (mail.comcast.net) and outgoing server
(smtp.comcast.net) keychain items. "
