My mother once lost about 200 photos from a European trip because her camera was dropped in the rain and the card ruined. I used PhotoRescue and recovered all but one of her photos. I was impressed.

<http://www.datarescue.com/photorescue/>

I'm afraid I don't know anything about importing photos into a camera, though I would think you could drag photos onto the mounted card?

Oops, I just tried that with my Canon camera. I removed the card and mounted it on my Desktop. A photo dragged over to the card (in the correct folder on the card) just fine, but when I tried to view it in the camera itself, the camera didn't recognize its presence. The camera makes .jpeg files and I dragged a jpeg onto the camera. Has anyone else made this work?

Hi Oneal,

I don't know about the RescuePro site, but having been down this road before I must agree with Otto that photorec is a great way to go, and free.

There are a couple saving graces here as my wife is a Thai citizen and that gets us some things in duty free and if I have a year long visa that will also help. Also if the age of the item is more than 6 mos. that helps or negates duties.

For everyone's information (in case you find yourself moving overseas), if the item you have is new, you don't want to ship it in the original box as that is a red flag. Sometimes it's unavoidable but it's a good rule of thumb. Also, just as when you cross any border, sometimes you are pulled aside for a random inspection, sometimes not. Also the inventory list is another factor in whether or not your container is inspected. The moving companies try to make the list look as inconspicuous as possible (as they will typically pack everything for you), but you'll never know till you're at the destination port.

So anyone care to weigh in w/impressions or data on Mac Pro's and MBP's models that have proven themselves or shown to be more problematic than others?

The "Scan" software has been updated for Lion; however Epson has a "Copy Utility" that worked fine for Snow Leopard, but they have not updated it for Lion. The Copy Utility was much easier, faster and gave sharper results for one-click operation for sending the scanned copy directly to the printer.

I was hoping someone using Lion had another solution to replace the copy utility,

I have backed up everything on my old MBP with TM on an external hard drive. Would it be feasible to transfer to my new MBP using restore on the applications I have? Some like photoshop elements are not one I can just re-install from the app store.

Looking to Purchase Windows 7 for my MBPro - Which One Though?

I am ready to take the plunge and install Windows 7 along with either Fusion or Parallels Desktop. I have two questions though before I purchase these Programs:

1) I am leaning toward Parallels Desktop as opposed to Fusion. Good or bad choice?

2) I am looking seriously at Windows 7 Pro because it offers 64 Bit support. Good choice, or overkill?

Thanks for your opinions.

Fusion and Parallels spend lots of time "trumping" each other. As each is enhanced, you'll be ahead of the other sometimes, behind at others.

As far as Windows is concerned, the reasons for 64 bit are similar (I think) to the Mac; i.e., addressable RAM. It's really unlikely you'll devote enough RAM to your virtual machine to make it "need" or benefit from a 64-bit operating system. That said, the choice is, I think, more difficult in the Windows ecosystem than it is on the Mac, because on the Mac the programs are more likely to adapt to one environment or the other.

The real difference in "Home" vs. "Pro" versions of the Window OS is whether they can be networked using Windows Active Directory. If you're a home user and don't know what Active Directory is, save yourself a bit of money :-)

Hi Nick,

I have the latest versions of Parallels and Fusion and I prefer Parallels
(prior to the latest version, I preferred Fusion). You can search for
discount codes and bring the price down a bit.

Win7 Home Premium can also run in 64 bit mode. The main advantages of Win7
Pro are the ability to join a domain and XP mode. XP Mode is really just
Windows Virtual PC (similar to Parallels or Fusion) with a fully licensed
copy of XP SP3. If you have a need for XP - either a driver issue for
hardware or software that is not compatible with Win7 - then you really
should be installing as XP virtual machine and NOT trying to run a virtual
machine in a virtual machine (XP mode within Parallels or Fusion).
However, if you also intend to install Win7 in Bootcamp, and have a need
for XP mode, then you might want Win7 Pro.

Before you take the plunge to 64 bit in Windows, make sure that 64 bit
drivers are available for you hardware. Unless you will be assigning more
than 4GB to Windows, there is no need to install the 64 bit version. You
might save yourself some headaches by using the 32 bit version.

Bob, I'm not a power user at all. I have a 256 GB SSD in my 2011 17" MBPro, with 168 GB still available to me, so I was planning on allocating 25 GB of disk space. Is MacOS 10.7.2 not 64 bit? In any case, I have downloaded both the 64 and 32 bit ISO's for Windows 7 Home Premium, so I'm ready to go either way.

There are only a couple of Programs that I want to run on my MBPro such as Quicken, that require Win 7, but all I really want is my setup...either 32 or 64 bit...to run Win 7 Home Premium as fast as possible.

Thanks again for your help.

Hi Nick;

Have you considered using either Virtualbox https://www.virtualbox.org/ (free) virtualization app to run Win 7 in a VM, or Apple's own Bootcamp in a small partition on the SSD?

I'm doing both of the above on a 240 GB SSD and in both cases Windows and OS X run startlingly fast. Windows 7 on Bootcamp on a 50 GB partition is far and away the fastest "hardware" Windows machine I've ever used.

I'm sure there are pros and cons for both of these use cases. They both work for me for my intended uses. Maybe one or the other will work for you.

I looked at Bootcamp and thought perhaps it would be a better option, but ran into a problem using the Program. It will not recognize that I have the ISO's on my Hard drive and on a 32GB Flash Drive. Instead, Bootcamp only gives me the option to burn the ISO to disc. I do not really want to do that when I have both ISO's on my Laptop.

Bootcamp did not appear to give me the option of using the Flash Drive for some reason when going through the setup. I went to give it another try, but Bootcamp will not even let me use the 3+ GB Windows Support Files I downloaded earlier...I can overwrite the existing files, but it refuses to use/recognize them.

If your Mac has a an optical drive, the Flash option is not available. My 2011 Mac Mini with no DVD drive gives me this option. Otherwise you need to use the DVD like I had to on my MBP

From https://support.apple.com/kb/HT4818 :

Support for the Windows 7 ISO installer

Install Windows with an installation disc you provide or, on Mac computers that do not have an optical drive, with a USB flash drive that contains a Windows 7 ISO image downloaded from Microsoft. The Boot Camp Assistant will offer to create this image on supported computers.

Lion WIFI Issues

Posted by: "Robert" cookrd1@discoveryowners.com   cookrd1

Tue Dec 6, 2011 3:34 pm (PST)

I am using Lion on a late 2008 MBP. Lion has worked great connected via ethernet to my router, but it only works sporadically via WIFI - sometimes it works ok for hours, sometimes almost immediately. Once it starts having problems, I can sometimes get it to work by tuning off Airport (WIFI adapter on MBP). Everything looks fine in System Prefs. My PC and phones are not having a problem connecting via WIFI. Snow Leopard is not having problems on the same computer.

I have searched various forums and found many complaints about WIFI connection problems with Lion, but have not found a solution.

I am using my 4G Android phone as a WIFI hotspot (legally, Vz). I can connect my phone via bluetooth or USB and both of these work fine with Lion, just not WIFI.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Bob

Hi, Bob. I'm completely uncertain if my experience is related to yours, but it may make you think of something you haven't yet.

I had a 2008 MacBook running 10.5.8, connected wifi to an 8 year old round, UFO/Frisbee shaped Apple Airport Extreme which was in turn connected by ethernet to my cable router. My habit is to wirelessly stream iTunes music on my MacBook and iTunes radio shows live to an Airport Express and speakers connected to it.

Audio would usually stream for hours without dropping out. Then, a month ago, it started dropping audio intermittently for a second to as much as maybe 10 seconds at a time for a couple of hours.

So, I bought a new Airport Express and a new MacBook Air running 10.7.2. I'm still having the same problem. The 2 constants are my iTunes software which was migrated from the old computer to the new one, and the 8 year old Airport Extreme. I'm wondering if our problem might be the same, a bad Airport Extreme.

Just something to think about and maybe point you in the right direction.

Android phone as a Hotspot. I thought everything was working ok in SL, but
this evening it was not working either. So, I tried my external WIFI
adapter, a Rokland N3 that I got because of the terrible range of the MBP
WIFI due to its measly 32 mw xmt power. No luck there either. Perhaps
this is a hardware problem with my MBP. I have no trouble with with the
WIFI connection to my PC, other Android phone, Touch, iPhone, or my
friend's various devices.

I do have a bad battery in my MBP, perhaps that is causing a problem, as I
assumed the power adapter would be able to adequately supply power since my
graphic card setting is set for better battery life and NOT better
performance (NVIDIA gpu not active).

I probably won't make it to an Apple store for another 5 weeks, so I guess
I will have to tether via USB, which has been working fine, and not WIFI.

Thanks,
Bob

Mac DVD Ripper Pro

I want to convert a DVD movie to mp4 file for my iPhone. I read at MDRP that the product would rip and convert to mp4, was I wrong? I seem to get the file ripped to a dvdmedia file, but no further. The ripping took a short time, gratefully, but it's of no use if it won't convert to mp4.

I probably misread or misinterpreted the sales text and or the Tutorial they provide. Anyone have an explanation or a better way of ripping to MP4?

That actually works?
