The answer is simple. Another app was running at the same time without my knowlege.
No more to say.

Well, you could spend ages obtaining folder sizes and "drilling down" to
find the culprits, or you could try an app like
Grand Perspective
<http://grandperspectiv.sourceforge.net/ >
or
Disk Inventory X
<http://www.derlien.com/screenshots/index.html >
Be patient while these obtain file/folder sizes.

OK, something is totally wacko here. I had the computer with me at a meeting today. When I got home and plugged it back in, it was frozen - cursor wouldn't move. So I held down the power button until it shut down and then restarted it.
Just out of curiosity I did a "commmand i" on the hard drive, and now it has 98 GB of free memory.

I think there is a default setting that has a portable automatically run Mobile Backups is you use Time Machine.
That is, when the computer is running, but not connected to its external Time Machine drive, it will try to make TM "snapshots" and save them to the hard drive, then when you re-connect the TM drive, it moves them there.
This feature can be turned off:

It seems to be intermittent. Right now my HD says 95.59 GB available. This morning it said 37 GB available. My computer froze and I shut it down by holding the power key down. Then restarted the same way, and I had the 95 GB again, but a little while later, back to the 37 GB. Restarted again - no freezing this time - and am back to close to 100 GB.
Something, like a runaway app or something, is messing with my computer. All I've used is Mail, Chrome and Excel during this time.
Help???

I use iCloud with my Apple computers & iOS devices. Any change to my contact list on one device is automatically reflected on the others. The exact instructions should be in your iPad manual.

Of course on the Mac, in Mail you should goto the Window drop down menu and choose Previous Recipients and clear any erroneous emails from there

I used to be able to download streaming video from YouTube, but (for some reason) Safari has crapped out on me. My extension no longer works.
I didn't upgrade anything, didn't do anything. I run 10.6.8 OS with version 5.1.7 Safari.
I downloaded another extension, this one for both Safari and Firefox. Neither works.
I am now considering purchasing software with which I can download any source of streaming video, not just from YouTube.
I had a looksee at Wondershare, however it does far more than I want. Its website does not mention video-streaming downloading. It also says that it is compatible with 10.7 and with Lion, which leads me to believe that it might not work with Snow Leopard.
http://wondershare.
Any recommendations on video-download pay software that can handle any source?
Thanx. Oneal

This is ancillary to my 'Safari video streaming' post.
My 10.6.8 OS has become buggy. More than of late, it started a couple of years ago. Most recently it is with Safari, however Mail has been wonky for quite a while.
In the main my apps function okay, however little things are no longer doable. As an example, I can no longer shift words around within the text of an email. I've documented this defect to the group and I had a respondent confirm similar problems with his Mail app.
Another example is the complete nonfunctioning of Activity Monitor, which will not open.
All these niggling (albeit minor . . . so far) issues have led me to believe/feel that there might be such a thing as 'software crepitude', that is: Over a period of time software (for whatever reason) starts to function less-and-less effectively.
I'm willing to bet that some respondents will say that I'm hallucinating all this, however some might actually concur.
I'm leaning toward an upgrade to Lion to tame my mess.
Thanx. Oneal

Do you have a clone? See how it runs from that?
A fairly old one, before things went bad. Before
going to Lion, you might try reinstalling the
10.6.8 combo updater. That might fix what is
probably several minor glitches that all have
added up.
