Apple USB Power Adapter

In light of recent events involving the safety of third-party chargers for iOS devices, Apple has launched a new trade-in program for all unauthorized USB power adapters. The company made the announcement on its support site this afternoon.

The ‘Takeback Program’ officially kicks off next week, and will allow users who have concerns about their USB power adapters to either drop them off at an Apple store for recycling, or trade them in towards the purchase of an official Apple power adapter…(...)

Aplo: a minimalistic theme with depth

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 05:11 PM PDT

Aplo

An interface can be minimalistic and still be interesting. It can be “flat” yet still have depth in spades. That is, apparently, the mantra that renowned iOS designer, Sentry, subscribed to as he meticulously slaved away at his latest jailbreak release.

A theme packing in support for well over 300 different apps, Aplo is “flat” done right. We’ve had the pleasure of going hands on with the theme over the last few days, and, in typical iDB fashion, we’ve created an in-depth video that showcases the inner workings of the theme. You don’t want to miss this.(...)

Biometric expert breaks down how an iPhone fingerprint sensor could work

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 03:31 PM PDT

Fingerprint light blue

After months of rumors and speculation, evidence popped up last month seemingly confirming that future iOS devices will have built-in fingerprint sensors. Code was found hidden in iOS 7 that refers directly to the feature, suggesting we could see it as soon as this year.

The idea, though, of Apple putting fingerprint sensors in its mobile devices spawns a number of questions like: what will it be used for, how will it work, and how durable will it be? Luckily, biometric authentication expert Geppy Parziale has decided to impart some of his wisdom…(...)

New iOS vulnerability lets malware slip through

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 01:05 PM PDT

Apple iOS 6 (teaser 001)

Apple’s iOS is generally considered the most reliable and secure mobile platform out there so little wonder that iPhones and iPads are the gadgets of choice of mobile workers everywhere. Despite its Unix underpinnings, iOS of course isn’t bullet-proof – no software is. But unlike Google’s malware-infested Android, you don’t hear every day about an iOS weakness so fatal it opens the door to malware.

Unfortunately, today is precisely that day as researchers from the Georgia Tech Information Security Center (GTISC) publish details about a newly discovered iOS vulnerability that allows malware installation via seemingly innocuous apps.

The weakness circumvents Apple's security measures and paves the way to “significant security threats to the iOS platform.” We’re expecting a swift response on Apple’s part and a fix via a future update…(...)

‘No More Folders’ removes folder backgrounds and mini grids inside folder icons

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 12:53 PM PDT

No More Folders Featured

It’s not unusual to see a random jailbreak tweak appear on the Cydia store that features no real practical application. For example, the tweak may present some new visual change, but it’s not exactly useful, and in fact, at least in some cases, the tweak could make your device less user friendly.

That’s not to say that there is no place for tweaks of this sort, there clearly is, otherwise developers wouldn’t keep producing them. The latest such tweak to fall into this category is No More Folders. This is a tweak that hides the folder backgrounds and grids, essentially making the folder invisible while closed.

Have a look past the break as we showcase how No More Folders looks and performs on video.(...)

Nokia’s Lumia 925 ad lambasts iPhone 5 camera

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 12:01 PM PDT

Nokia Lumia 925 (three up, front, right angled)

Microsoft’s Apple-bashing in Surface commercials was just a start. Now the harsh criticism of Apple’s devices extends to Microsoft-backed Nokia, whose Lumia 925 television commercial takes aim squarely at the iPhone 5′s eight-megapixel iSight camera.

As you know, iPhones are Flickr’s top three most popular cameras as “every day, more photos are taken with the iPhone than any other camera,” per Apple’s Photos Every Day ad. Nokia cleverly puts an interesting spin on the fact by believing that “better photos are taken with the Nokia Lumia than any other cameraphone”…(...)

Apple allegedly shifting iMac production from Quanta to Pegatron

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 11:01 AM PDT

iMac 8G (two up, left angled, right angled)

If a new report by the somewhat reliable DigiTimes is to be taken at face value, then Apple may shift production of its all-in-one iMac desktop from the current manufacturer Quanta to Pegatron. Now, Pegatron already builds older iPhones, has reportedly been commissioned to build Apple’s rumored plastic iPhone and used to make iMacs.

Nowadays most iMac orders are being fulfilled by Quanta, which also assembles the majority of MacBook Air and MacBook Pro notebooks…(...)

CBS-Time Warner Cable dispute blacks out network’s iOS apps

CBS 1.0 for iOS (teaser 001)

If you thought the argument between CBS and Time Warner Cable was just a spat between two media giants, the collateral damage is quickly spreading. After Time Warner pulled the plug on the network over the weekend, CBS began blocking access to its Internet streaming.

Instead of Under the Dome, Big Brother, or even preseason NFL games, users of the CBPS iPad app are shown a video taking aim at the cable company: “Say no to Time Warner Cable”…(...)

Apple issues another system status update to developers

System Status Apple Developer

Although the majority of its services are back online and in working condition, Apple has been diligent about keeping developers updated on the progress of its efforts after suffering a security threat a few weeks back.

Key services like the iOS and Mac dev centers are back online, but there are still a few items that remain stuck in limbo, namely, Xcode automatic configuration, TSIs, program enrollments, and renewals in Member Center.

Apple says that it expects that the majority of the remaining services should be back online this week. Have a look inside for the full e-mail that was issued to developers today.(...)

IDC: iPad now down to one-third of tablet sales

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 08:45 AM PDT

iPad (two-up, iPad, iPad mini, hand)

Tablet sales slowed during the second quarter, falling 9.7 percent to 45.1 million units, according to IDC researchers Monday. Because interest in tablets rises and falls with Apple’s iPad, the slowdown in sales during the second quarter was attributed to the lack of a new iPad device being introduced by Apple.

In the horserace between Apple and Samsung (which will unveil a next-gen Note phablet on September 4), the iPad remains the top-selling tablet, although growth fell 14.1 percent on shipments of 14.6 million iPads, down from 19.5 million during the first quarter of 2013, IDC announced Monday. No. 2 Samsung also saw tablet shipments slow to 8.1 million units, down from 8.6 million devices during the previous quarter, though the South Korean vendor saw a 277 percent annual growth in tablet shipments…(...)

How to adjust the position of app icon labels

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 08:15 AM PDT

LabelUp Pro Featured

LabelUp Pro is a new jailbreak tweak that allows users to reposition the app icon labels that normally appear underneath each app icon. The tweak features several sections dedicated to things like the Home screen, folders, and the app switcher. Each section contains a simple slider that allows you to adjust the position of the labels.

It’s a tweak that technically works, but I found it a bit difficult to use due to the fact that respring is required with each change. Have a look at our video walkthrough inside for a brief demonstration.(...)

NFL iOS app updated for the 2013-14 season, adds Verizon-only streaming

NFL Mobile 80. for iOS (iPhone screenshot 001)NFL Mobile 80. for iOS (iPhone screenshot 002)

As first noted by AllThingsD, The National Football League has updated its iOS software for the upcoming NFL season. Among other changes, the official NFL Mobile 8.0 app boasts a revamped appearance, with stats and data updated for the 2013-14 season. As the new version now combines two previously standalone apps, one from the NFL itself and the other by Verizon, it comes with a premium streaming feature – but only if you’re a Verizon iPhone owner.

Jailbreakers should proceed with caution as the new app isn’t supported on jailbroken devices. If you’re into professional American football, you’re probably aware that the 2013 NFL regular season opens Thursday, September 5 (the Baltimore Ravens are playing against the Broncos in Denver). I’ve included more details about the new NFL Mobile 8.0 app after the break…(...)

Ban veto: Obama’s pro-Apple ruling cripples ITC as future patent weapon

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 07:45 AM PDT

iphone 4 samsung galaxy

What’s the likely impact of the weekend decision to veto a proposed ban on sales and imports of Apple’s older iPhones and iPads? Aside from the expected self-congratulations and condemnations, the action by the Obama administration puts in question the value of patents and the ability of rivals to knee-cap their competitors via ITC rulings.

The most immediate impact may be further delays in Apple’s quest to ban imports of Samsung devices. The final ITC ruling is expected Friday on whether Samsung products the iPhone maker says infringes patents should be blocked from the US, according to a Monday report…(...)

Microsoft shaves $100 off Surface Pro through August 29

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 07:20 AM PDT

MS surface pro

In another sign that Microsoft’s Surface tablets are failing to hit the ground running, the Windows giant has slashed the Surface Pro lineup by $100 through August 29. The Microsoft-branded tablet family was unveiled last October so it’s only logical the company now wants to get rid of unsold inventory as it gears up to announce a second-generation Surface later this year. Both the 64GB and 128GB flavors of the Surface Pro are now a $799 and $899 value, respectively…(...)

‘FaceHalt’ gains new experimental mode for wider app adoption

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 07:19 AM PDT

FaceHalt Experimental

Great news for all of you FaceHalt early adopters. The tweak has now gained access to apps like Hulu, Netflix, and HBOGo by means of a new experimental option.

The new option, which can be found in a revamped preference panel located in the settings app, is the biggest new feature included with the tweak’s 1.0.2 update. Other features included bug fixes.

In the change log for the update, the developer states that users should try the new Experimental mode, which can be setup on an app-by-app basis, if they find that merely enabling the tweak for a specific app doesn’t work. Unfortunately, in my testing the tweak with Netflix, I was met with some pretty mixed results. Your mileage may vary. (...)
