Siri has a 'killer app' feature: It will read incoming text messages aloud while your driving. Must have.

and it does require the 4S - I don't know why it wouldn't run on the iPad 2
since it has the same processor unless it requires that much ram.

Well new iPhone 4S - looks the same, A5 processor that iPad 2 has, new 8MP /
1080P camera, biggest feature is Siri (kept same name) and tons of voice
assistant features and 64GB model for $399 (same $199/$299 pricing for
16GB/32GB).

The iPhone 4 will stay and is now $99 as does the 3GS which is free on
contract.

The 4S comes out on the 14th a week from Friday, iOS 5 & iCloud come out Wed
10/12 and iTunes Match comes out "End of October" - no firm date.

In total? Underwhelmed excite voice features.

I have Siri on my 3GS and it works great. The fully integrated Siri will be limited to the 4S. It really is a remarkable app, even in the older incarnation.

The absence of an iPhone 5 was a surprise, no? This looks like an incremental (if impressive) upgrade, esp. the camera, but not enough to induce me into another 2-year, c. $2400 contract.

VoiceOver turns your iPhone into an unmanigeable beast when driving, requiring lots of double taps etc. Useless.

I'm not one to use voice over. It doesn't work well with background noise and anyone in close proximity can hear what you're doing. So, why people complain about privacy issues with social media AND want to use voice commands on their phones is beyond my comprehension.

Driving is reasonably private and handsfree is essential. Unfortunately, receiving text messages and knowing immediately what's important, and what is not, is also essential. Siri should help alot.

Thanks. Never tried it so I had no idea what was required.

It would surely have been trivial to enable VoiceOver to speak SMS messages
on arrival, though?

This was all about when driving.

It is an accessibility feature so it's not intended for general use.

Of course if you're walking and using headphones there are no issues about
background noise and privacy.

Very similar to what they did from 3G to 3GS. A lot of people saw it as an
unimportant upgrade. I went from the 3G to the 3GS and loved the increase
in speed. I will be upgrading my 4 to the 4S for the speed and camera
updates for sure.

So they didn't call it the iPhone 5, but it is, as in 5th generation. The
iPhone 4 was only called that because it was the 4th iteration and it gave
them a good reason to get away from the 3x naming.

iPhone - 1st gen
iPhone 3G - 2nd gen
iPhone 3GS - 3rd gen
iPhone 4 - 4th gen
iPhone 4S - 5th gen

Apple announces AppleCare+ for $99, covers iPhone 4S accidents

Sent to you by Bill Boulware via Google Reader: Apple announces
AppleCare+ for $99, covers iPhone 4S accidents via 9to5Mac by Jake
Smith on 10/4/11

.

Along with the new iPhone 4S this afternoon, Apple has announced a new
program called AppleCare+ that covers the iPhone 4S for up-to two
accidents. The new program costs $99, and on top of accident coverage
you get the AppelCare usuals, like phone support and Genius bar
appointments. Don̢۪t think you̢۪ll be getting off that easy, as each
accident will be an additional $49.

AppleCare+ is available October 14th, the same day as the iPhone 4S.
Full description below:

Every iPhone comes with one year of hardware repair coverage and 90
days of telephone technical support. AppleCare+ for iPhone extends
repair coverage and technical support to two years from the original
purchase date of your iPhone and adds coverage for up to two incidents
of accidental damage due to handling, each subject to a $49 service
fee.1 With AppleCare+ for iPhone, Apple experts can help troubleshoot
issues over the phone or at an Apple Retail Store. They̢۪ll answer
questions about iOS, Apple iPhone apps such as Mail, iMessage, and
Calendar, and help you solve interconnectivity issues between your
iPhone and Mac or PC. And if your iPhone needs service under the plan,
Apple technical support representatives can even set up a repair during
the same call.

People still insist in the concept of talking to a machine...it never worked. Just like video calls, they have been around for ages and got very little interest.

I hope that does happen to iphone 4s

Rod

PS. That $399 price is with a contract?

The $399 contract price is 64GB ($199 for 16GB and $299 for 32GB - same as
all previous models sans the 1st gen) - the pricing for iPhone on Contract
is now EXACTLY the same for the iPod Touch except the lowest touch is 8GB
and iPhone is 16GB. And the iPhone 4 8GB is $99, 3GS is free both on
contract as well.

Was wasiting for the iPhone 5 - about to go for the 4s

I have been a Blackberry user forever. My company now supports the iPhone using the Good Enterprise software. I use it on my iPad and it works well. I was anxiously waiting for the iPhone5. I hate my Blackberry so I think its time to jump in and go with the 4s.

Here is my thinking, let me know if you agreee.

My primary need is as a phone and email. The 4s will do fine.
For phone I need international (Verizon is my carrier). The 4s will give me that. I will get the 64gb so I will be out $399.

I figure that the earliest that the 5 will be announced is between February and April. I don't think its worth the wait.

I appreciate any comments. You can do it in the group or mail me direct.

Thanks
Jay
