Wow! Thanks so much for this information, Randy! I did upgrade my Flash player last week from a suggestion to do so, and was worried I had the trojan. However, I do not see any of the files you mention. I feel so relieved!

Audio Players for non Mac Supported Format

Hi folks,
I have come to the conclusion that one never appreciates what one has, but nevertheless, I'm looking for audio players for Mac OS X 10.6.8 that play unconverted formats in their original form, without requiring them to be imported into a new directory (thereby taking up more space) and leaving the playlist intact after the program closes. iTunes does this with all the formats it supports. It gets the file directly from the location where the file is, it doesn't require I import it into iTunes. And when iTunes quits, the playlist is there still when I want to listen to the songs. I don't have to go looking for it again. There are programs that do one, but not the other. As it stands now, I convert the other formats and then open with iTunes or I go hunting everytime. Does anyone know of an app that has the full compliment of features. Thanks.

OK:

I am using a script to mount a volume. It tries to mount the volume,
and if an error is returned, it mounts a different volume.

The script works, but any error is reported to the users via a dialog
and waits for input (clicking the "OK" button).

I would like to expand the script to eliminate the displayed message
and requirement for input from the user.

The script is:

try
mount volume [pathname1 here] as user name "user1" with password "pw1"
on error
    try
mount volume [pathname2 here] as user name "user2" with
password "pw2"
    end try
end try

How might I modify this so that it doesn't display the error and
doesn't wait for input?

If it matters, I'm using Snow Leopard.

Thanks,
Dave

Sounds very much ON TOPIC to me. Sorry but I know nothing about the subject.

The more detail you give in your question the better chance you have in getting an answer.

Hi Dave

This is just a shot in the dark - you could try inserting an "exit
try" line directly after the mount volume [pathname2 here] as user
name "user2" with
password "pw2" line.

With any luck this may mean you escape the "try" before it gets a
chance to display the dialog, but I'm not very hopefui...

MacBook Battery

The part of the battery I see after I put it in is a white plastic. The rest inside is a gray metal. My battery is fine, keeps a charge and I am pleased with it. Except, the plastic is coming free of the metal. Thus, the white plastic bulges out. Does any one have an idea on how to attach the two back together?

Thanks,

IMMEDIATELY, remove the battery and replace it. If a lithium ion battery is swelling or bulging it is in a dangerous state and can combust.

I assume that it is for the Macbook. Take it to an Apple Store to have it replaced. If it is a third party battery, call them and ask them how to deal with it.

DO NOT SEND IT THROUGH THE MAIL OR ANOTHER DELIVERY SERVICE, IT IS DANGEROUS.

Operating System re-install ancient iMac

Posted by: "cnltnn" cnltnn@yahoo.com   cnltnn

Hello,

I'm giving my kid an ancient free iMac G3. (If I could afford an iPad, I wouldn't be typing this on a 400Mhz G4) :)

I keep getting an error that says:"InterfaceLib--GetComponentResource" and Quicktime errors. I was considering erasing it and reinstalling the operating system. He won't be getting on the internet, so I thought I could use my old OS disks (the free iMac didn't come with any).

I have 5 OS disks from my computer:
1. Power Mac G4 Software install
2. Power Mac G4 Software restore
3 & 4. eMac software Install and restore disks 1 and 2 (came with OSX)
5. Mac OS X Tiger includes Xcode 2 CPU drop in DVD

I am guessing none of these will work because the first 2 are for a G4 not G3, I can't remember what the 3rd and 4th disks were for, and the 5th disk is a DVD not CD. Am I right?

If I am right, is there a way to correct the error message "InterfaceLib--GetComponentResource" so I can download some basic programs on it?

Thanks for any help! :)

What you are missing is part of Quicktime 3.

From the sparse description of your iMac is is apparently either a "Slot Loading" or Summer 2000 or early 2001. Can you tell us the model id from the System Profiler? Does it have OS X on it? What OS(es) is/are currently installed?

The earlier two run either System 8.6 or 9.0.4. The later, runs 9.1 and 10.0.3 to 10.4.11.

There is a iMac Firmware Update 4.1.9 for all 3 models, so a install disc for another model will be problematic if used on your iMac. You will either need the correct install for the model or a retail installer disc.

You might be able to find the missing component if you do a web search using the phrase you gave in quotes.

Software Install or Software Restore disks that came with a Power Mac or an eMac will almost certainly not work properly with an iMac. Scratch 1, 2, 3, & 4.

#5 sounds more like it was a store-bought upgrade.

The very first iMac G3's lacked a Firewire port, but the next generation, before they moved to G4's, had Firewire. Which is this?

If the iMac has Firewire, Put #5 in the PowerMac G4, boot it into Firewire Target Disc mode, connect it to the iMac, and install from the DVD.

Even the earliest iMac G3 can run 10.3.9. Later, 10.4.11

Monitor resolution and font size

Posted by: "DaveC" davec2468@yahoo.com   davec2468

A new Mac frequently means higher display resolutions that were not
possible in previous Mac models.

Oh, boy!", one thinks, time for bigger monitor(s)!

But along with that greater real estate comes the discovery that
fonts seem smaller. They *are* smaller. A 12 point Geneva "M" (for
example) is smaller when viewed on a higher resolution screen than
when viewed on a lesser-resolution one.

Most applications (including Finder) allow you to change font size to
your heart's content. Except The Menu Bar.

I'm happily experimenting with Lion after using Snow Leopard for a
few years and being quite happy with a lesser-resolution display. Now
I'm seeing (or not!) the Menu Bar on my new 1920x1080 monitor. I
mention the "native" resolution because that's the one at which text
looks most crisp. Any lesser resolution will give larger -- but fuzzy
-- text.

The answer is, of course: increase the font size. Of course, there is
no way to do this for The Menu Bar.

So I guess I just await a 3rd-party utility to do this...?

deleting old apps first?

Posted by: "Les Streater" lesstreater@marpubs.demon.co.uk   linernutuk

I am about to purchase Creative Suite 5,5, on a 2.8GHz iMac Core i5.

I have a number of old versions of Photoshop, Indesign etc already on this machine.

Several people have advised me to remove all traces of these old programmes before installing the new to avoid bringing in suspect preferences, etc. I have no special brushes, shapes or anything to worry about keeping.

What's the List's recommendation?

And what's the best way of doing this cleanly? I was going to get AppZapper, but having read through a list of reviews it seems it is not as stable as it once was. What are the recommdations? AppCleaner? AppTrasher? What are you guys using?

Thanks for any advice.
