Canadian-based Interactive Elementary has released two new resources for Apple's iPad while also adding features to its flagship educational application, Middle School Math HD. Jacob's Angle, an iBook, tells the story of a grade school shot put competition while relating basic geometry concepts. Geared for students aged 9-12, Jacob's Angle includes Keynote slideshows, animations, and several reading comprehension widgets, which allow students to monitor their understanding as they read.

"This is a brand new type of resource," explains Dave Brown, the company's president and an Ontario teacher. "Math and mathematical language can seem very inaccessible to many students. Literature opens doors. Through connecting mathematics with literature, students use their background knowledge, make connections, predict and infer. Literature stimulates discussion and creativity. As math teachers, we need to recognize the deep connection between storytelling and learning. That's what this resource is all about, and it's interactive."
Developed using Apple's iBooks Author software, Jacob's Angle includes Keynote slideshows, animations, and several reading comprehension widgets, which allow students to monitor their understanding as they read. The iBook is geared for students aged 9-12.
Jacob's Angle premiers on iBooks for $0.99, the same price as Interactive Elementary's other new offering, Probability Tools.
"Probability Tools is a very simple tool, but we feel it's a resource that teachers will find indispensable," explains Brown, referring to the application that provides students with virtual manipulatives like coins, dice, and spinners.
Although he suggests schools will benefit from the savings on some reoccurring expenses due to their adoption of his company's product, he asserts the application is more than just another means for schools to save money through tablet-based learning.
"The app really augments the learning experience because it allows students more flexibility in how they interact with materials that have always been static. There's definitely a dynamic component to this resource."
Interactive Elementary also announced a free update to Middle School Math HD. Added to the application are student assessment tools, a report card feature, and instructional videos to complement each of the eight activities included in the bundle.
The app, which emphasizes game-playing and skill development for children aged 11-14, debuted on Apple's' App Store last June. Embraced by teachers around the world, it includes activities related to basic algebra, data management, and coordinate geometry.
Brown says he and his development team strived to create a product that not only followed from curriculum standards but also served to liberate teachers from tedious tasks like preparing and marking the drill work.
"North American schools have entered into a major period of transition. Technology is being infused everywhere you look. Of course, tablets are beginning to play a prominent role in this movement. What we offer is just one piece of the broader puzzle. We aim to build resources that effectively replace the worksheet while providing students with immediate feedback on their understandings."

1-bit Ninja Developer Announces New Game - Oh Hi! Octopi! - Published on 09/04/12

kode80 LLC today announces the upcoming release of Oh Hi! Octopi!, its new iOS game. Help fight back a never ending stream of Octopi using your trusty hammer, paint bubbles and the occasional bomb. Oh Hi! Octopi! combines color matching puzzle gameplay and single screen arcade platforming with inspiration from the 16-bit era and a control scheme designed specifically for touch screens. It features full-resolution pixel art, 60 fps framerate, original soundtrack and Game Center leaderboards.
Fort Lauderdale, Florida - kode80 LLC today is pleased to announce the upcoming release of its new iOS game Oh Hi! Octopi!. Oh Hi! Octopi! combines color matching puzzle gameplay and single screen arcade platforming with inspiration from the 16-bit era and a control scheme designed specifically for touch screens.
In Oh Hi! Octopi! you must help fight back a never ending stream of Octopi using your trusty hammer, paint bubbles and the occasional bomb. Using your hammer Octopi can be dazed temporarily and moved around the screen. Hitting Octopi with the correct colored paint bubble will knock them off the screen removing any like-colored Octopi they may hit on the way down. Big combos can be achieved resulting in huge scores, the more Octopi you remove in one go, the more points you receive. Remove 10 Octopi to progress to the next round but watch out, each round the Octopi increase in speed.
Oh Hi! Octopi! employs a control scheme similar to kode80's previous game 1-bit Ninja. The screen is divided into two halves with each half acting as a button. This two button approach removes a lot of the problems commonly associated with touch screen controls; accurately touching the desired button and the need for on-screen controls. In Oh Hi! Octopi! the two buttons act as left and right. Tapping either button causes the player to strike with their hammer in the appropriate direction, holding either button causes the player to walk and by tapping left, right, left, right repeatedly the player can perform a spin jump move useful for navigating to higher platforms.
The creator of Oh Hi! Octopi! and founder of kode80 LLC Ben Hopkins had this to say "I've always been a big fan of the single screen, never-ending type puzzle games. Trying to beat your high score as the screen fills and the speed increases, aiming for bigger scores but then making a mistake that could cost you the game, successfully causing a chain reaction that frees up a enough space to survive just that little bit longer, these are all things I love about these games and wanted to bring to an arcade platformer, the result is Oh Hi! Octopi!".
Oh Hi! Octopi! mixes elements from both puzzle and arcade games for a unique gameplay experience. Additionally, all contacts will be displayed in an alphabetical list. LinkedIn and XING contact details will include information such as phone numbers and e-mail addresses, making it easy to quickly get in touch with business partners via BirthdaysPro. "BirthdaysPro" will gladly send out up to two reminder messages for each upcoming birthday, making sure that they will not be overlooked - even if the user forgets to start the app regularly.

Mezmedia, the makers of Sushi Showdown, a popular screen-mashing iOS game are releasing their app for free. The upgraded version, now called Sushi Showdown Max, features a horde of living and extremely cute sushi bent on invading the player's restaurant. Players mash the screen as fast as they can before the sushi reach the end of their screens. The game features hilarious food-related items like, cups of sake to slow the sushi down to wasabi nuclear warheads that destroy everything on screen.
Singapore, Singapore - Mezmedia, the makers of Sushi Showdown, a popular screen-mashing iOS game are releasing their app entirely free.
The upgraded version, now called Sushi Showdown Max, features a horde of living and extremely cute sushi bent on invading your restaurant. Players mash the screen as fast as they can to smash the sushi before they reach the end of their screens.
Hilarious food-related items can be purchased to help out the player - from cups of sake to slow the sushi down to wasabi nuclear warheads that destroy everything on screen.
Every five levels, the players must face down a 'boss' to progress. From a karaoke-loving maki roll, to a grumpy bowl of udon, the bosses are as lovable, if not more than the sushi themselves.
In the new Max version, players get access to another 50 levels in a 'Hard' Mode and can upgrade their items beyond the original version. Current players who have completed the game will love the additional difficulty and challenge.
When asked why the app will be released for free, Project Director, Mr Sandy Yeo says, "We felt more people would enjoy the game if the app was entirely free, plus now that the app is ad-supported, we can do just that."
Sushi Showdown Max is currently available in the iTunes App Store.
