Yup. You get to control when the drive is on and off. ;) You can still treat it like it doesn't have a switch if you wish by just leaving it on. But with a switch, you can leave the drive connected, but off. I do this all the time. This prevents it from mounting every time you start up your system. It won't mount until you switch it on.

Many drives with a switch don't shut down automatically unless the system is set to spin them down. This can be good or bad, depending on your particular needs.

I also prefer to kill the power to the chain when connecting and disconnecting which you can't do if there is no switch. For all their "hot swapping" prowess, I still think it's less risky to have no power in the chain when connecting and disconnecting. And a power switch makes me more confident that a drive is not mounted when I disconnect. Don't have to check. Cheap drives sometimes don't have power indicator lights.

Cheers,

Howdy.

My personal experience with external HDs that do not have a true off/on
switch has been uniformly bad.

I've had both Seagate FreeAgent and Western Digital MyBooks externals
and both had problems connected to lack of a true off/on switch. One
of them had a pressure sensitive touch type switch which usually didn't
work. If it did work no one could tell if it was in off or on
position. Just a mess.

I have neighbors with similar externals and with similar problems.

Folks on this groups have also reported problems with external drives
that don't have a true off/on switch.

I recommend against buying this type of drive.

Some external drive cases also have a built in sleep mode that can't be
subordinated to the Mac OS Energy Saving sleep settings. This was
certainly the case (so to speak) with the Western Digital MyBook. As
I've written here often enough that older members will groan at reading
it again, a Western Digital MyBook is the only external I've ever taken
to the garage and reduced to splinters with a 16 lb sledge hammer.
Very satisfying.

Seagate and Western Digital are on a drive, as it were, to the bottom
of the price and quality barrel to dominate sales at big box consumer
stores like Costco and Wal-Mart. The cases are cheap cheap cheap and
the little green board "bridge" chips inside are also cheap cheap
cheap. Often the bare drives themselves are decent so if you have one
of these fail get yourself a drive dock like a Thermaltake BlacX (or
others) and take the bare drive out and try it in the dock to see if
the drive still works.

Other types of better quality Seagate units may function just fine so
at this point my dislike is for the ones without a true off/on switch.

That's not OT at all.

This might help.

Page takes some time to load and has issues, but I waited and it did eventually appear. Google "Macintosh Mouse M0100 autopsy". I'm sure there are others.

They were woefully unprepared, as usual my order had
an unchangeable shipping address that is my AT&T Billing Address - in past
years I can immediately go to Order Status and change it. Order Status has
been done since I placed the order. I called the number listed for such
things and after the IVR was told that they had an "Extremely High Call
Volume" and was disconnected. I waited an hour and called back, was placed
on hold (better than disconnected) and after ~20 minutes was able to update
the shipping address and told that any other changes (and this) could be
done at Order Status - I attempted to explain that I called because I wasn't
able to access that page and was told that it was because my Apple ID wasn't
associated with my order (it was) - I gave up trying to explain that the
landing page wasn't working and just had her change the address for me.

Too bad to hear. From the looks of it, Apple had been 'wanting' to sell unlocked iPhones all along. I'm not sure that was part of the plan. Of course, it won't happen until Weds.

Well, I'm a very unhappy Verizon customer this morning. I got online
at 5:00 this morning (Eastern time) to preorder an iPhone 4S. After
going through the whole process (some of it not intuitive) I got to
the payment page only to find that the $200 worth of Verizon gift
cards my kids had given me to make this purchase were NOT ACCEPTABLE
for payment. Basically it amounts to: "Credit cards only, thank you,
and you can use your Verizon cards to pay off your bill each month"!
I have found nobody at Verizon who can do anything about this. Wish
the kids had gotten me Apple cards instead.

Grrrrr,

Mike,

That would only make sense. Most cell providers do require a credit card to secure a plan, AFAIK.

I made the mistake of buying a Blackberry several months ago through Verizon. They would accept nothing but a credit card. Verizon is NOT my favorite telecom company, second only to Comcast.

Well, Harry, the text on the sleeve of the card does say "You can use
your card to purchase phones and accessories...", and I've had a
Verizon account for about ten years so far, so they know who I am and
how religiously I pay my bill. Sorry to report that I have Comcast
cable service, though. :-)

I have used a Verizon card to pay for equipment before and had equipment
charged to my account. It might be a combined Apple/Verizon issue. I know
when I order from Apple.com they will only ship to my AT&T billing address
and I have to call and have them change it in their system after I order....

Absolutely. Mike, can you go through Verizon directly? I'm assuming that you tried the Apple store to order the phone?

Re: iPhone Sales

Fri Oct 7, 2011 10:09 am (PDT)

The Apple Store wanted no part of the Verizon cards; I called and
asked about that yesterday. My dealings with Verizon were as follows:

Yesterday I visited the Verizon store (physical store, not web) and
asked if preorders could be placed at midnight local (eastern) time.
I was told they started at 3 AM local time. I didn't ask then if gift
cards would be accepted, but did say that was what I had. No negative
response to that.

At 5 AM this morning I went through the process described in my
original post. Part of that process asked if I wanted one of the
listed insurance plans, none of which were identified as AppleCare.
Since in my original call to Apple I was told that the AppleCare had
to be purchased at same time as phone, this morning I called the
(local) Apple store first, to confirm I could buy the AppleCare when I
had the phone, if I couldn't specify it in the preorder. I was told
that would be no problem.

Today I again visited the (physical) Verizon store and was told "no
gift cards" on the preorders and there was nothing they could do about
it there. They suggested I call Verizon Support, which I did when I
got home. The support person I reached was amazed that the gift cards
weren't accepted but, after he put me on hold and checked, he
apologized and said it was just as I had been told.

I guess I have to get on the back of a line at the Verizon store next
Friday morning.......

I bet it is because of the fact that is a "Pre Order" if you waited until
they were available the gift card would likely work. I know they authorized
my credit card as soon as I hit "Confirm"

Bill, I have no doubt that the cards will work then, because I'll be
standing in front of them, cards in hand, along with the Verizon
statement that they can be used to purchase phones. Not going back to
their website then but, of course, that wouldn't have any advantage at
that point!

Re: Maximum size of an external disk on Leopard

Howdy.

The theoretical size limit at this time is the a lot more than any hard
drive manufactured.

It's millions of terabytes.

Here's an article from Apple's KB:

"Mac OS X: Mac OS Extended format (HFS Plus) volume and file limits"
-Last Modified: July 29, 2008
-Article: HT2422

<http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2422>

"Maximum volume size and file size (Mac OS X 10.4 or later) close to 8
EB"

So a 1 TB hard drive should do just fine. On a personal note, I've
frequently formatted drives of 1, 1.5, and 2 TB in size with zero
problems.

Be sure to pick the drive item itself in Disk Utility and do not
select/pick the partition/volume name list below the drive and
indented.

Then click the Partition tab.

Then you must change the Partition Layout popup item from the "Current"
to 1 Partition. You can also choose 2 or more Partitions.

The easily missed part is picking something other than "Current"
partition. This is a sort of "gotcha" of bad design IMO but it is what
it is.

Then click the Options button below the partition window pane. The
Options button does not become available until you change the Partition
Layout from "Current" to something else like 1 Partition.

Pick the GUID in the Options pane but read the short blurb first if
using an older Mac OS on a non Intel Mac.

Then click OK and then click the Apply button. It should take about
15 to 20 seconds to complete.

You can rename the drive after the reformat is complete.

Found a 'new' virus

Although we don't have to worry about this in OS X per se and most of us are sophisticated enough to see through the spam email attachments as malicious, some might find this of use.

I received a spam (NY traffic ticket scam) and checked out the .zip file attached to see what kind of virus it was. Yahoo mail did not detect anything and Sophos didn't either whether as the .zip or as the .exe it contained even after updating Sophos. So I submitted the .zip file to Sophos and got this response.

Hello,

Thank you for contacting Sophos Technical Support.

The file(s) submitted were malicious in nature and detection will be available on the Sophos Databank shortly.

Disabling PDF in Safari

Posted by: "DaveC" davec2468@yahoo.com   davec2468

Seems each time I upgrade to a new version of OS X I have to do this
(and being of that age, have forgotten how I did it last time...)

So: how do I disable viewing PDF files automatically in Safari?

1. I have no internet plug-in to enable this funciton

2. I don't want to use the Ctr-click (or right-click) option. I am
looking for the *automatic* download and opening of a pdf by clicking
on the URL.

Thanks,
Dave

I found it. Google finally coughed it up:

In Terminal, enter:

defaults write com.apple.Safari WebKitOmitPDFSupport -bool YES

and press return. Restart Safari.

This apparently doesn't work in Safari 5.1 or later (or so I read...)

Thanks,
Dave

Side Bar in Finder windows

Posted by: "DaveC" davec2468@yahoo.com   davec2468

Fri Oct 7, 2011 10:23 am (PDT)

Prior to Lion, each Finder window has a small oval button in the top
right corner that adds the Sidebar, the column of devices, shared
items, and "favorites".

That button was very useful when opening software installers (disk
images): click the button and when the Sidebar appears, drag the new
software into the Applications folder.

In Lion, this button is missing.

Anybody know the "why" behind this? Any utilities to bring back the
Sidebar button & option?

Thanks,
Dave

Just right click in the toolbar area and choose "Hide Toolbar" and you have the same functionality.

Navigating a PDF in Preview

Posted by: "DaveC" davec2468@yahoo.com   davec2468

Fri Oct 7, 2011 10:57 am (PDT)

In Lion's version of Preveiw, it seems that some more nice features
have been deleted.

Used to be (in SL) you could navigate a PDF a page-at-a-time by
pressing left or right arrow keys.

Now there doesn't seem to be any way to navigate to the top of the
next page if you're at any zoom level other than "full page display"
(in which case you can use "page up" and "page down" buttons).

If there were some kind of "next page" navigation possible one could
assign hot keys to them.

Any other observations?

Thanks,
Dave
