I have a POP3 account. My phone will d/l any messages in my inbox that it
doesn't (somehow!) know it's already gotten It won't d/l any messages if
I've already either deleted them or moved them to a different folder in my
ips mailbox.

If you email provider uses pop 3 protocol it will always do this.

Only if you have it setup to store emails on the server.

By default, a POP3 account will download the mails to your email client and then delete them from the server.

If you have emails in your inbox on the server side they will eventually be downloaded.

Delete (or move somewhere else) all the inbox messages on the server if you want to start from scratch, because the message counter is in the client application and if the application is new, the counter is zero so it will download all the messages on inbox again.

If you don´t want this to happen again, set your client application to "delete messages on the server" after downloading them.

On my case I usually set my email client to "delete messages on the server after XX days", so I always have a backup of the latest email.

POP email uses a file stored locally on the device to keep track of
which messages are not already downloaded. Sounds like apple
backup/restore is not copying this file. There should also be a
setting to tell the server to throw away messages after downloading,
or to keep them for a certain number of days. Back when I used POP I
set it to two days to allow me time to recover from any computer
errors.

I'd recommend switching to IMAP, though, if your provider supports it.
IMAP keeps your mail on the server and lets you access it from
multiple devices (like your PC, or iPhone, or Webmail). You can also
save mail offline if your online folder gets too big.

Voice Memo I Deleted Still Hidden In iPhone!

Posted by: "Alvin Auerbach" Alvin.Auerbach@verizon.net   potentmap

I deleted some voice memos from my 3GS, some as long as a year ago.
Now Im using a 4S with all files transferred from the 3GS.
Using a program called iExplorer, I opened the 4S as if the 4S was a normal mounted volume, and in a folder named Recordings, I found many voice memos that I deleted when they were in the 3GS!

Whats going on here? Why isnt a deleted voice memo actually deleted? Are there other types of file that I deleted still in the iPhone?
This violates my privacy!

I sent a reply to Alice at the iPhone group. Usually it appears quickly but hadn't. I am resending fresh and to the iPad group. Hope this gets posted.

I got this and it works great but there is a free way with icons provided. I kept a couple of the ones I created but used a couple of the free ones which were more professional ( wifi and bluetooth)
The free site is very easy to use. There are full directions - scroll down to near the bottom.
So now I have my custom created ones and those at this site.

Do the 4 cases fit the 4S phone?

Still thinking about the 4S, is it worth it or about the same as the 4? Not
too technical please.

Worth it depends on your needs/wants. The 4s has a faster processor, more RAM and a much better camera. Not to mention SIRI. You will have to decide if one ( or more ) of those is somthing that you want/need enough to upgrade.

would be improved by the 4S?

Or is all this talk about how neato it is just making you feel "itchy"?

1. "Acting up" can often be fixed, if we know what is actually happening.

2. AT&T will sell you a 3GS, with a 2-year contract, for $0.00

photo quality of iPhone 4s ?

I haven't seen much discussion regarding the photo quality of the 4s. If you've taken photos with this new phone, would you give us your opinion. Or if anyone knows a site that has uploaded photos taken with the 4s, would you please post the URL.

For iPhone owners who are also into genealogy, there is a free app you can use to take photos of headstones in your local cemetery. The app takes care of automatically uploading the photos and volunteers then enter the vitals data from the photos of the headstones. With the use of GPS, the burial locations and cemeteries are correctly identified. It's an easy way to participate in building a free on-line resource for family historians - genealogists.

For anyone who might be interested, the link to the app at the iPhone app store is located at the following site.

I have owned a 3G, a 3GS, a 4, and now a 4S.
The image quality has clearly and obviously improved with every increment.
The 4S camera and images are by far the best from an iPhone, and from reviews I've read, probably the best fron ANY phone.

I have been an advanced amateur photographer for roughly 50 years, currently using a Nikon D300s, with an assortment of lenses.

The aspects that differentiate phone cams from quality point-and-shoot cameras today are prett much limited to: a) sensor size (a larger one allows improved low-light imaging) and b) zoom lenses.

Sensors (and imaging software) are continually improving, and the output of the 4S's sensor today is more or less as good as that of the much larger sensor in the top-of-the-line Nikon point and shoot of 8-10 years ago.

iPhone 4S Carrier Quality: AT&T Wins For Data Speed, Verizon For Cal

Posted by: "Bill Boulware" bill.boulware@gmail.com   boulware0224

Fri Nov 18, 2011 12:36 pm (PST)

http://feeds.wired.com/~r/GearFactor/~3/tTKzC3XhxWs/

Sent to you by Bill Boulware via Google Reader: iPhone 4S Carrier
Quality: AT&T Wins For Data Speed, Verizon For Call Reliability via
Wired: Gadget Lab by Christina Bonnington on 11/18/11

AT&T provides the highest data speeds for iPhone 4S owners. Image:
Metrico

The iPhone 4S is available on three major carriers, leaving potential
buyers to wonder whether AT&T, Verizon or Sprint is the better network
choice. Pricing plans aside, carrier quality is a significant factor in
anyone's purchasing decision, and now consumers have hard data to help
them choose: A just-released study reports AT&T is tops for fast data
speeds, while Verizon is the most reliable when it comes to making
phone calls.

Sprint's main draw is that it offers unlimited, albeit slow, data.

The study was performed by Metrico Wireless, a mobile device
performance analytics firm. To test network performance, Metrico made
6,000 voice calls, conducted 8,000 data download/upload tests (both
moving and stationary), and downloaded more than 21,000 web pages.

The tests found that Verizon dropped calls 2.1 percent of the time,
while AT&T dropped 2.8 percent of calls, and Sprint lost 3.7 percent of
calls. The average dropped call rate for the entire mobile industry is
1.4 percent. Although Sprint dropped the most calls, it had the highest
call quality on the uplink (outbound calls), while AT&T had the best
downlink call quality (inbound calls).

Sprint suffered from the highest number of 4S call failures. Image:
Metrico

With regard to maximum data speeds, AT&T led the pack at 6,047Kbps,
with Verizon a distant second at 2,371Kbps, and Sprint crawling in last
with only 1,767Kbps. It's unclear, however, exactly where Metrico
tested data bandwidth, and as any iPhone-toting San Francisco resident
will tell you, data quality can be terrible in areas with high
concentrations of tech geeks.

The original iPhone launched exclusively with AT&T, which was the sole
carrier of the iPhone until Apple announced that Verizon would also
begin carrying the iPhone 4 in January 2011. Prior to the launch of the
iPhone 4S, rumors swirled that the phone would land on Sprint, and
ultimately proved true. Of the three carriers, Sprint is the only one
that provides a true unlimited data plan.

Metrico's results are consistent with what we found back when Verizon
began offering the iPhone 4: AT&T offered better download speeds, while
Verizon had better coverage.

Another important stat Metrico found was that the iPhone 4S performed
perfectly across all three networks when it came to data task
reliability. In short, 100 percent of the time, the phone was able to
complete web page loads, stationary downloads, and stationary uploads.
This contrasts with an earlier Metrico study from March 2011 that found
Verizon had a higher download success rate when the phone was
stationary, and AT&T had a higher rate while the phone was moving.

So what's the bottom line? It looks like you're going to get a
relatively positive data-downloading experience no matter which carrier
you choose, if only because you will be able to download data. But if
you value downloading material quickly, you should go with AT&T. If
call reliability is paramount, stick with Verizon, and if you want to
use a lot of data but don't care about speed, go Sprint.

I though it was not working for a while, but the App Store was busy downloading my Navigation App, which takes forever. I plugged the iPhone into the charger and let it run for a couple of hours and it's fine now.
