In addition to easy-to-use expense management at home and abroad, the app features: appealing user interface, auto-refresh of exchange rates; eMail expenses as a formatted HTML document, and/or a CSV file; easily edit, reorder or delete trips and entries; and a built-in, multi-function calculator. Designed as an intelligent assistant for international travelers, the app stores all expenses in both the local and converted, home currencies.

With a high-end, dark wood-grain GUI, the app includes no instructions for use; all operations are intuitive and trouble-free. One-time set-up includes entering the user's language, home currency, and the frequency of exchange rate updates. The designers have paid great attention to human factors. For example, English, Spanish, French, Italian and German appear in their respective places in the scrolling list that appears by touching "Your Language", but the group of five most common languages also appears at the head of the list. Similarly, the app defaults to US dollars, with the yen, euro, swiss francs, british pounds and Canadian dollar leading an alphabetical list of 156 different currencies.

Set-up complete, the home page displays four buttons: Travel Expenses, Currency Converter, Translator, and Quick Add. A summary of the last expense is also shown on the main screen for convenience. The quick add function allows fast expense entry, and goes straight to the entry page of the last trip.

Travel Expenses is the heart of the app, and the Travel Expenses page contains an artfully designed scrolling list of all trips ordered by date by default. The order of trips and expense items can be customized. The user may substitute any photo or graphic for the generic icon displayed with each travel expense listing, which includes the trip's label (i.e. the country or city), the description of the expense (e.g. work, personal, etc.), the date and the total amount of all expenses, automatically converted to the user's home currency.

Selecting any entry brings up an itemized listing of each individual expense for that particular trip. When entering an expense in the local currency the user may enter a description using the pop-up alphanumeric keyboard, or choose a predefined category. Included, with appropriate icons, are: Transportation (Flight), Cash Withdrawal, Taxi, Local Transportation, Hotel, Camping, Fuel, Road Tolls, Souvenirs, Food & Drink, Treatment (Hospital), Shopping, Entertainment, Additional Fees, and Other.
Sums are entered using the built-in, multi-function calculator. Both the trips and the expenses scrolling list is fully editable, and displays individual expenses in both local and home currencies, plus the date and description. Expense items also display the corresponding category.

The currency converter function features side-by-side odometer displays for going from any one of 156 currencies to another. The large entry keypad also includes a calculator function. Results are displayed in the dual odometer highlight window with the currency listing. For example, entering 1,555 displays "Japanese Yen - 1,555 JPY" on the left cylinder, and "US Dollars - 18.66 USD" on the right.

The translator function employs two text fields, each with a labeled flag beside it. The user selects his native language/flag and enters the word or phrase to be translated in the text field. The translator supports copy and paste functionality, allowing translation of eMails or web pages. Selecting any of 36 languages displays the translation in red type in the second text field.

Version 1.2 brings iOS5 compatibility, reduced memory footprint, smaller binary size, and UI refinements.

The application retrieves and visualizes all messages generated by apps and processes, which otherwise would remain hidden. The information is presented on a polished, intuitive interface, which requires no instructions for use.

After starting the application we get a comprehensible overview of all apps and processes which have generated log messages. Pie-charts and graphics provide an intuitive way to quickly check the sanity of your system.

By pulling down the main view an analytical view is shown, which presents a graphical overview of all the messages being generated grouped by severity.

Back to the main UI, we can unfold each and every process or app section, and take a closer look at the messages belonging to them. You don't have to be an iOS developer to quickly spot errors: intuitive graphics and dedicated colors help finding the relevant entries.

Whenever an app is crashing, we usually can't do much - except maybe contacting the developer, and trying to describe the problem. However, this information is usually not enough to find the root cause and solve the issue.

Once you identified the relevant log entries, you can copy it to the pasteboard, or send the logs via e-mail to the support staff.

With iSyslog you can quickly identify the faulty process and its log entries, including the detailed call stack information - which is vital for developers to fix the problem.

Messages can be copied to the pasteboard or sent one by one via e-mail. You can e-mail as a zipped attachment all messages generated by a given app. A useful feature: the device type and the iOS version is automatically inserted in the e-mail body (these data can be very important to developers or support personnel).

IT Admins: Mobile Device Security Issues Are Slowing Enterprise Adoption - Published on 11/30/11

A survey conducted by the Enterprise Device Alliance revealed that IT administrators believe that the challenge of securing mobile devices is the largest impediment to acceptance by enterprises. 54% of the respondents replied that preventing access to sensitive data from unauthorized users is the top concern slowing adoption smartphones and tablets for enterprises. Other survey results reveal buying plans, impacts of mobile devices on IT management, and attitudes toward BYOD in organizations.

Sunnyvale, California - A survey conducted by the Enterprise Device Alliance (EDA) revealed that IT administrators believe that the challenge of securing mobile devices is the largest impediment to acceptance by enterprises. 54% of the respondents replied that preventing access to sensitive data from unauthorized users is the top concern slowing adoption smartphones and tablets for enterprises. 59% of the IT professionals said that another source of concern is the security risk should the devices be stolen or lost. Despite these concerns, more than 90% reported that tablets are being tested in pilot or production deployments at their organizations. Though the respondents indicated that only 6% of the employees currently have tablets, they expect that number to increase 250% by the end of next year to approximately 15% of their user community.

The organizations reported a noteworthy divergence of reasons for supporting mobile devices. For Smartphones, the most reported benefit driving adoption was email access. For tablets, the driver was executives demanding that IT support the devices. Unlike smartphones, the main use of tablets was apps including "App Store Apps," custom apps, and mobile access to a variety of enterprise IT resources.

"The good news is that there's still time for enterprise IT to plan and prepare for the onslaught of mobile device deployments coming in 2012. However, our survey reveals that many IT organizations are under resourced and under investing in tools, and this could cost companies competitiveness and delay solutions that reduce security risks," said T. Reid Lewis, president of GroupLogic, a founding member of the Enterprise Device Alliance. "The Enterprise Device Alliance helps IT professionals make the best choices for their organizations by arming them with an aggregate view of the plans of their peers as we've done with this survey. The EDA helps IT professionals prepare for the future by providing examples of solutions that are proven in the marketplace."

One novel challenge that mobile devices present to IT is managing employee owned devices (BYOD). A surprising three quarters (75%) of responding organizations reported policies that allowed at least some of their staff to use their own mobile device for company purposes. The survey revealed that even among the largest organizations, those with more than 10,000 employees, two thirds (66%) allowed some employees to bring their own devices and that IT would support them to some degree. This acceptance of BYOD may explain why 45% of the companies provide no prescribed device configurations. For the 55% who are providing some configuration, one of the most comprehensive ways to deliver them is by using a mobile device management (MDM) solution. But only 16% of organizations with more than 500 employees reported using MDM solutions today. That number is expected to more than triple to 50% by the end of 2012.

Other noteworthy findings of the survey include:
* More than half (56%) of IT departments see popular consumer solutions such as Gmail and DropBox as security threats, nearly one third (30%) of all organizations tolerate the use of these consumer solutions because they aren't using a secure alternative.
* 55% of the organizations expect to have completed their pilot testing of tablets and moved to production deployment by the end of 2012.
* Email access is the primary enterprise resource that IT will make available to mobile users (87%) followed by remote control/access to a personal computer (38%) and access to documents and files on corporate servers (31%).
* Perhaps due to the halo effect of the iOS devices, Macs will increase their penetration in the responding enterprise-class organizations by 40% from 6.7 to 9.6% of the personal computers by the end of 2012.

About the survey:
The in-depth survey sought to learn the impact of smartphones and tablets on large organizations and the IT administrators who are tasked to manage and support them. The online survey was conducted from September 22 to October 15, 2011 and elicited 532 responses. From these, we selected 277 IT administrators who were in commercial, government and educational organizations with more than 100 employees. 68% of the respondents were from organizations with more than 500 employees. They understand that it make sense to leverage that same infrastructure to easily and cost-effectively centralize administration and management of all users, Macs and other devices."

Tablets and other ultra-portable devices are definitely entering organizational deployments often as employee-owned devices. It took a small team of computer scientist to combine optical character recognition, word generation technology and a puzzle solving algorithm to create this word game solving app.

This app opens to a simple interface with a blank board and a few buttons. The user presses import and chooses a screenshot of their word game. Within seconds the word game is redrawn on the screen and a word is shown in bright yellow. The word shown is the best possible word, placed in the best position to get the highest points in that turn. At this point the user can press the next arrow to cycle through more words, define the current word, or go back to their word game and play the word shown.

One of the scientist on the team must have had a good sense of humor, because the app also contains a comical twist. Each time a word is shown, a funny phrase is posted along with it. Users will see phrases like: "You will be remembered as a genius.", "They are probably cheating too!" and "We understand. You needed a little help." while searching for the best words.

The universal app Recipes Genius from Jourist Publishing House offers 480 recipes. They can be looked up on the screen and are easily implemented in the kitchen. The app displays a starter photo for each recipe, lists of ingredients and it guides the user step by step through the preparation process. A special feature: the app shows a picture for each action to indicate exactly how the intermediate step works and what the outcome should be. The Cirencester-based start-up previously found success at the regional South West Chamber Awards winning in three categories: Most Promising New Business, Most Innovative Business and Entrepreneur of the Year. Winners from the regional awards went on to compete against each other at the National Chamber Awards in London.

The award tops a fine first 19 months for the mobile games firm which has been gaining local and national recognition from a number of business publications and organisations. Other notable accomplishments in 2011 include Start-up of the Year at the Nectar Business Awards - awarded by a panel led by business woman and star of BBC 1's The Apprentice Karren Brady - and being included in Smarta's 100 Top Small Businesses and Mobile Entertainment's Top 50 Mobile Innovators.
