Lion - Invisible User Library in Time Machine

Howdy.
I just posted this as a response to someone asking about general Time
Machine things and thought it could be useful for all Lion users to
know about.
The normal Users/.../Library folder in Mac OS X has been made invisible
in Mac OS X 10.7 Lion.
There are several ways to make it visible again for your convenience.
One way is to use the Finder's Go menu and press Option then click on
Go menu and the Library folder appears in the Go menu listing and can
be selected. It will then be visible and useable until you click
somewhere else in Finder.
You can drag this Library folder icon, while it's visible, to the
Sidebar where it will remain for you to use without resorting to the
Option/Go menu trick. There are also Terminal commands to make
Users/Library visible.
THIS POSTING talks about this Lion invisible Library folder ALSO being
invisible in a Lion Time Machine backup.
I've just now learned that in Lion's Time Machine backups the
User/Library folder is now invisible just as it is invisible on the
Lion boot drive that was backed up!
So how do you restore something using Time Machine Restore when you
can't see it to find it in the Time Machine backup ????? Well, it can
be done but takes some work.
Having just tried this using Terminal commands, not all of which a
actually worked as advertised, I downloaded and used the free
TinkerTool utility which has an excellent one button solution to make
all files visible (and when needed to make those files invisible
again).
This command may require a restart of the Mac to finalize. OR, you can
launch Terminal (in Utilities folder) and type the following command at
the prompt:
killall Finder [Return]
So that means to type the word "killall" (no quotes), then a space,
then type "Finder" (with a capital letter "F" and no quotes) then press
the Return key. You can even copy the command from this message
(without the spaces and the [Return} part and then paste into the
Terminal window at the prompt. Then press Return.
The various User/Library folders on connected drives will all become
visible.
This will relaunch Finder and the invisible files will be visible or
files that you want to return to being invisible (using the TinkerTool
feature) will go back to being invisible.
I DO NOT RECOMMEND that folks keep normally invisible files visible.
Too much chance to delete something that is not understood but is
required.

No, iTunes has nothing to do with iCloud. iTunes Match is an option in
10.5.1 but you don't have to turn it on.

Or not....
I put ~/Library in the sidebar of my Finder windows when I installed Lion. If I open a Finder window, click on Library in the sidebar to display its contents, then activate Time Machine, the TM display shows me ~/Library in all of the historical windows.

I have also activated the "Quit" functionality in Finder, so all I have to do is click in the Finder, press <Command><q>, then click on the Finder icon in the dock to restart it.
Absent that functionality, the next easiest way to to that would be to press <Command><Option><Escape>, click on Finder, then on "Relaunch".
No need to make things more complicated than they have to be.

I'm pretty sure you have some unidentified system peculiarity that's biting at your ankles; this does NOT seem to be a problem inherent to Lion.
>>> It's funny you should mention this. Not since then have I done so many reinstalls as with Lion. I have done 3 to date. I have made a second bootable partition with 10.6 on it, only to have it operate so smoothly, that I decided to go ahead an upgrade it to 10.7. Then things went south. I wound up having to reinstall 10.6 and then 10.7 again. I am so tired of the process that I have decided to stay at 10.6.8 at this point.

Those dashes looked a bit odd to my naked eye, so I enlarged them by
using Control-scroll ball upward on my Mac mouse.
I noticed the hyphens have sort of a shadow gray hyphen a pixel above
the hyphen's black pixels. No idea of the purpose, but of course, it is
part of ALL text glyphs. They all have the offset shadow.
Yes, I've noticed it for some time, but just decided to ask about it.

I didn't think 'michael' would be such a popular password. I hope
everyone doesn't conclude that people named Michael are, in general,
that foolish! I remember a few years ago someone gushed proudly on a
list about using the perfect password: the complicated last name of a
former teacher. Unfortunately, in doing that the person also shared
the name of the teacher with the list.

Anyone who thinks a strong password can be something that is a real word/name doesn't understand what the concept of a strong password is If it is something you can find in a dictionary/phonebook, or a trival combination thereof, then it is something the most basic of password hackers will try. Computers don't get bored. They don't mind cycling through such lists trying all combinations, just incase
The only true strong passwords are random combinations of letters, with a few characters not normally found in words (_,-,| and so on) thrown in for good measure.

Weird Cmd-Tab behavior
Posted by: "DaveC" davec2468@yahoo.com davec2468
Tue Nov 15, 2011 12:20 pm (PST)
Used to be, until recently, holding down Cmd-Tab keys would result in
the application icons popping up on the screen and the "highlighted"
one would progress across infinitely. In other words, the
highlighting of the apps would continue to the rightmost icon and
then start with the leftmost one and repeat until I lifted the keys.
Now when I press the Cmd-Tab keys, the highlighting of the app icons
will progress to the rightmost one and... stop. It will not continue
with the leftmost one and continue infinitely.
Same if I press Cmd-` (just above the Tab key): the highlighting of
the icons now goes to left (as expected) and stops with the leftmost
icon.
Is anyone else seeing this change in behavior?
I just recently re-installed Lion (for other reasons).
Thanks,
Dave

Still cycles for me, in Lion.

Huh. Didn't know about that one. I always used <Command><Shift><Tab>.
But either way, it still cycles for me, in Lion.

Hi Jay,
I am still on Snow Leopard (and plan to stay there, at least for a while). I don't recall whether I used Tivo Transfer back when I had a PPC - I probably did. But I don't recall any problems when I moved to an Intel Mac. I don't remember if I transferred any programs from computer to computer, or just used newly transferred material. I do member having lots of problems with Toast 8, particularly trying to burn some of the things that I had downloaded - Toast would keep on quitting. This was a known problem.
Sorry that I can't help you more.

Harry,
I started Bootcamp Assistant and it told me that I can't use Bootcamp
because the HD in my MBP has three partitions (Lion, SL and Data). I get a
warning message telling me that Bootcamp will only install on a HD with a
single partition. Funny, I didn't remember that from Leopard, and I
thought that my HD in Leopard already had a second (Data) partition when I
installed Bootcamp.
Or am I doing something wrong (again)?
If I can round up an external USB drive with only one partition (I think
all of mine have a NTFS or FAT32 and a Mac Journaled partition), I will
give it a try. Or, maybe Bootcamp won't work on an external drive?

If you partition manually, you can use 3 partitions on the hard drive. You must first ensure that the target partition for Windows is named BOOTCAMP and it's formatted FAT32.
My issue was just starting the machine with a Windows disc. I just can't the machine to recognize the DVD as that of a boot source.

You know, come to think of it, you don't even need Bootcamp Assistant to set up Windows. You can partition manually, boot from the Win dvd manually. When the Win installer 'sees' the hard drives, you wind up having to reformat the FAT drive anyway, as Win 7 cannot use that format.
I just did this a couple of weeks ago, and it's the way I've always done it. Bootcamp assistant basically repartitions the drive for you and can download the new support software. When it comes to the install, it just reboots to the Win dvd.

Thank you!
That is a new one for me!

Thanks, Jim, that works. Does seem like a lot of trouble to go through when in Snow Leopard all one had to do was drag the file to the sidebar. Whatever made the folks at Apple complicate things more?

Well, actually, it seems there's an easier method:
Where in Snow Leopard you would just drag to the sidebar, in Lion you <Command><drag> to the sidebar....

iPhone bluetooth connection to car radio
Posted by: "Joan B Sax Ph.D." jsax@me.com joan05061

I use the iPod part of my iPhone for listening to audiobooks. I have tried several of the devices that connect your iPhone to the car stereo (my car radio does not have an auxiliary place to plug into) through FM stations and none of them work without my having to change to different frequencies depending on where I'm driving. Furthermore the sound is inconsistent and sometimes awful. I am told that there are after market bluetooth car radios out there that allow you to couple your iPhone or iPod with the radio to use its speaker without the FM radio. Anyone had any experience with this who can recommend a good one? I know there are regular standalone radios that one can do this with, but how about car radios?
TIA

I've tried many FM transmitters, and they all stink. When I tried
them all I had two cars. The older one had a cassette deck, and those
adapters are pretty good, and less than five dollars. If you have an
older care with a cassette deck then you can do that. As it was 15
years old I traded it in, and the new car has not only an aux jack
but even a way of hooking up an iPod with a special cable, so the
radio panel controls the iPod. I solved the problem with the other
car, without the tape deck by my wife's wrecking it, so I had to buy
a second new car :-)

As long as you are willing to buy a new radio, why not get one with
an aux jack and forgo the Blue Tooth? Certainly a lot less
complicated and I'm sure that a cable would be better than over the
air, even if the air is BlueTooth and not FM.
