Howdy.

I think the only way is to convert the names to a table, sort the
table, then convert back to text from table.

There might be an Automator way to create a Service to do this but I
took a brief look and don't see anything that comes with Pages and/or
Automator to do this. There might be an Automator workflow available
to download for this purpose.

There might be a way of doing this within Pages but I'd simply copy/paste
it into a spreadsheet (Numbers, say), sort it there, and copy/paste it back.

It is a good spreadsheet app. It does not have all the features that Excel has, but it is a lot younger.

I'm still learning it, since I dropped MS Office when I moved to Lion. I can't see spending the kind of money that MS wants, when all I want is Excel.

The computer that might need its free space cleaned up is the new one. That in and of itself creates a problem, because if you want to make the most efficient use of Migration Assistant, you'll want to run it during setup, before you create any user accounts on the new computer. For that reason, you might want to run iDefrag on its boot volume while the new machine is started up from ANOTHER (external) drive's bootable Lion installation, or even a bootable USB stick. In that case, of course, you'd download the iDefrag demo to the bootable drive that is going to run the application on your new Mac.

All of this is relevant to your situation ONLY if you have huge files on the Mac you want to migrate to the new one (and by huge, I mean many tens of gigabytes, such as a virtual machine file for Parallels or VMware Fusion.

Jim, I'm a very light user. I do email, surf, take photos, download podcasts, and listen to iTunes. I try not to download or add any apps once I get a computer running, and only deal with this techy stuff every 3 or 4 years when I upgrade my computer. I have a few thousand photos and a few thousand songs, if that is considered large files. Other than that, I added Parallels when I bought the new computer 4 years ago, but never used it for any purpose.
I'll try the Apple store Geniuses, as booting from another source is beyond my capabilities at this point.
I appreciate your input.

Good idea. Even better (since it's a new Mac) might be AppleCare online. Depends a lot on what Apple Retail Store you go to. The smaller stores often have "Geniuses" who should more properly be called "Genius in Training." I've now had Geniuses at my local (tiny) store tell me things that obviously were not true, verified by a 1 hour drive to the San Francisco marquis store, where the guys and gals at the Genius Bar have seen it all.

When you call Apple, you may START with someone who really can't help, but you'll be transferred to someone with the proper skillset if your fist person cannot help. Of course, if the person you're speaking with needs physical access to your machine that's not possible, but two weeks ago I had a mail support engineer spend over an hour with me as I shared my Mac's screen with him until we figured out how to configure IMAP mail accounts on my new MacBook Pro (my ISP's implementation of IMAP was apparently just a tiny bit different from standard).

And, if you don't have 40 Gigabyte files, the problem I discussed initially cannot be your problem.

Already tried AppleCare phone support, but we got nowhere in almost an hour. It just got frustrating for both of us, so we agreed to give up. I'm hoping to find someone at the Apple Store who will accept cash for a private tech call and they will set the computer up for me. It's not worth the headaches any more.
Thanks for your support. Ken Silva

I have now downloaded and tried Flip for Mac. Including draging the file to the desktop. All to no avail. It still "plays,"but the screen remains black. It did come (I believe) from a Windows user.

You might try installing Perian, which is kind of a universal codec set
for OS X. VLC might also play it. Not having to work with many Windows
files, these are only guesses, but quick and easy to accomplish.

Sent to you by Bill Boulware via Google Reader: Apple's Black Friday
Retail Store Sales were "off the charts" via 9to5Mac by Seth Weintraub
on 11/27/11

We obviously had to white out numbers above – From Apple's Retail
inventory system.

A source inside Apple Retail has shared with us the numbers for Apple's
Black Friday sales event. Black Friday is always huge shopping day and
Apple forecasted at least 4X sales for the day. However, because Apple
did have the lowest prices on big ticket items like the iPad, it blew
away forecasts by 7PM and unsurprisingly had its biggest sales day of
all time..

Apple Retail was forecast and broke Retail sales records all over the
country today, this is from [redacted] today, the forecast today is
more than 4 times what we normally do. We broke the forecast by 7pm.

MacBook Air sales were also particularly strong according to our source.

Apple Store discounts are extremely rare and with more Stores open than
ever before, the temptation was too much for many.

pasting image in Mail doesn't work ... why?

Posted by: "halboye18" hal.horwitz@comcast.net   halboye18

Sun Nov 27, 2011 8:50 am (PST)

Since moving to a mac and using Mail this weird thing happens with picture attachments.
Can anyone explain why? I'll explain my workaround, too.

Someone sends me an email with attached images. The images show up in the body of the email. I select image(s) from the group and "Copy." Next I select New Message and Paste the copied image(s) into the body of the new message .. the selected image(s) show up as expected; however when I send this email the recipient does not received the image(s). This is weird.

Second scenario. Someone sends me an email with attached images. The images show up in the body of the email. I click on Forward ... and on the newly created email I delete everything except for the image(s) i want to send. The recipient of this email will get the images I intended to send. Why the difference?

Although the second scenario does work, but it is a real pain in the butt!

thanks for your help,

Handbrake and file sizes

Greetings:

I've used Handbrake before with no problem, just updated to the
latest version. I've checked the forums for this question, but can't
seem to find a solution, so I'm hoping someone here might know:

Having converted some family VHS tapes to a dual layer DVD which
results something like 7GB worth of files. As I've done with other
DVD's, I'd like to shrink that via Handbrake to around 1 GB.
However, on this occasion, no matter what the format and even with
"target file size" and "optimize for web" checked, the file produced
by Handbrake is still pretty large.

Am I missing something?

Yes I know. The program "Shortcuts" requires that you use key shortcuts instead of right clicking which completely eliminates the contextual menu feeling.

Once again the question: Will anything negative happen if I delete all the contextual menu plug-ins?

Does this happen in other programs too?

The spell checker should not spell check numbers so I would trash the Dictionary preference file to begin with and see if that helps.

Thanx for the article link, Tim. Selling ebooks via Amazon, or even being published by Amazon sounds not only doable, but desirable.

Following an earlier thread *[OT: ereader publishing]* does anyone know of or has used ereader software that can create a product that can be sold on Amazon?

For instance, how would I convert Word.doc files to a format that can be uploaded to Amazon for eventual ereader download?

Sorry Guy, have not obtained anymore info. I have not done any real checking re the tutorial that might exist on the Amazon website. Oneal

Re: Eudora/TextEdit to Apple Mail ???

I ran a Performa (OS 7.5) from 1996 until 2007. Basically I used it for text. No real complaints. In that time I only bought a monitor, a mouse and some cartridges for my Apple laser printer, which (an HP clone) cost major coin (a geenote) back then.

Anyway, I used Eudora Lite, which had been supplied by my ISP. At some point I had problems with my app and I lost (or thought that I did) a bunch of emails. (I keep everything.) If I recall, one email folder totally vanished a few years before upgrade.

When I purchased my iMac in early 2007, a techie retrieved my Performa contents, which I downloaded to my iMac. Those contents traveled with me to my laptop.

My old emails (some) are present, however they do not have the former Eudora form. The emails have been collected and are accessible in sundry TextEdit files.

Im tired of using Spotlight to search for old (pre2007) emails and Im tired of the crappy-looking TextEdit files. Is there any app that can convert TextEdit emails to regular Apple Mail emails? I want to maintain my current Apple Mail form. (... [-: ...)

I also have Eudora emails (as they then looked) in a sequestered folder, however Spotlight does not seem to want to go there. I checked its search parameters and its supposed to be checking all folders. Not sure why no Eudora emails show up in my search results. No privacy settings for Spotlight have been enabled.

So, can I create 'new' emails ( la Mail) from my preemails? Thanx. Oneal

Click on the one that's relevant and see if it takes. I had a few baffling experiences myself when I first upgraded. Seems to be working better now.
