I finally had success!

The problem was that I reinstalled OSX on the new computer to start off fresh and remove files from a half-transfer problem, but realized that I downgraded it from Snow Leopard to Leopard. I was under the impression that both computers were Leopard, but they were Snow Leopard - so when I downgraded the newer computer, Migration Assistant wouldn't work because I was in fact trying to migrate from newer to older OSX. It's not like the About this Mac info tells you what your computer is if you're not sure unless you know by looking at the version number

Anyway, MIgration Assistant worked like a charm, and I only had a slight problem opening up my iTunes at first until I learned how to fix that.

Harry, it was your last sentence that got me investigating, finding and solving my problem. Thanks!

I think I will duplicate the pref file first. Then delete as you suggest. Will try.

The easiest way is to quit the program and then drag the pref file to the Desktop. Having done that you start the program again; a new pref file will automatically be created. If the problem persists and you want the old settings back (font size, etc.) you just quit the program again and drag the old pref file back into the pref folder where it originally was.

Quit text Edit
User/Library/Preferences/com.apple.textedit (there are two)
Copied to desktop
Trashed com.apple.textedit (there are two)
Restarted Textedit
Opened the document.
1922 is no longer being hi-lighted'

But the curious thing is that all of the "learn" corrections I had
taught textedit originally were retained in the new preferences.
Where are "learned" text kept if not the preference file?

Howdy.

You can open and view and check the contents of your user spelling
dictionary using TextEdit itself.

The user dictionary won't appear until you have added at least one word
to it using the Learn Spelling command.

The user spelling dictionary is located in:

Users/your account/Library/Spelling

File is named LocalDictionary.

Press Option key (to copy this file to Desktop) and drag
LocalDictionary to Desktop. This makes a copy of it and leaves the
original alone (just in case of a muck up).

You can then drag LocalDictionary to TextEdit to open it.

You can also open it in other text editors such as Tex-Edit Plus or
TextWrangler but no guarantees that the division symbol between words
will be recognized as a carriage return so the spelling list is
presented as a column which is what Apple's TextEdit does.

You mention a "3.WMV" file. There is a Windows Media codec called
WMV3, which according to my copy of the Flip4Mac manual is supported
by Flip4Mac. However as this doesn't work for you I'd suggest trying
it in Handbrake.

If that fails you could try the following:
If the extension on the clip is .mwv then I would suggest making a
COPY of the file (for safekeeping) and changing the extension to .avi
- then try running it in Flip4Mac.

Unfortunately this is as much as I know about WMV3; sorry I can't be
any more helpful.

Your Macintosh came with QuickTime, and it can play several types of
media files (both music and movies) as it comes, but not all types.
Most AVI files won't play as your Mac comes from Apple, nor will
Flash or Windows Media files. The really good news is that you can
download a couple of FREE QuickTime plug-ins to enable QuickTime to
play just about any sort of media file you might encounter:

For Windows Media Video files, download and install the free Flip4Mac
plugin for QuickTime:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/wmcomponents.mspx

For just about everything else, including AVI and Flash, download and
install the Perian plugin for QuickTime, which is also free:
http://perian.org/#detail

These two plug-ins don't conflict with each other. Install them both.

Now you can use QuickTime to view just about any and every video
format you might encounter. If you download a file that doesn't
automatically open in QuickTime when double-clicked on, do a "Get
Info" on the file and designate QuickTime as the default player for
all files of this type.

Incorrect. The use of key shortcuts is an option, but not required. All commands are still available in the contextual menu via right-clicking.

I doubt it. Just put them into a new folder called Contextual Menu Items (disabled) in your Library(s). You can then always put them back.

Oh, that sounds great! Thanks for correcting me, I'll have to take a closer look at it, sounds pretty cool.

They don't just change from day to day, they change throughout the day.

So it's not a bad idea to use NameBench occasionally to see if the
servers you have chosen are still near the top of the list.

Another thing that you might want to try, to see if it will speed up
your Web surfing, try turning off IPv6.

Quit all browsers.
System Preferences -> Network -> choose the Ethernet tab in the far
left column --> Advanced button -> TCP/IP tab --> Configure IPv6:
dropdown menu, choose Off --> Okay button.

The reason that turning IPv6 off may improve performance is that some
DNS servers do not properly respond to IPv6 requests. As a result,
your computer has to time out waiting for a response and then try a
secondary DNS server.

In recent versions of OS X, IPv6 typically is on (set to "automatic")
by default. But your ISP may not support IPv6 yet. You have nothing
to lose by turning IPv6 to "off" and then seeing if performance
improves. When I first turned it off, I tested it out by going to a
Web site that I visit often that is typically slower to load than any
other Web site that I have visited. It came up instantaneously, as
if it had been cached! I had never seen it do that previously.

Changing your IPv6 setting isn't immutable. If you don't realize a
performance improvement, just change it back to "automatic." There
is no downside to trying this out.

Yes, but it has limitations. As you don't already have it, I suggest Neo

Hi,

You say you just updated to the latest version, but the last release was
0.9.5, from January this year. Are you referring to this or a newer SVN
nightly build.

As far as I am aware the Handbrake team are moving away from the "target
file size" options, in favour of the constant quality setting. Have you
tried turning this down until you hit the file size you want ?
