Ken, you can start with System Preferences/Users & Groups/Login Items. You can also get a Program called "EasyFind" (App Store) which is excellent at finding Programs/Files anywhere on your Computer.

I guess I wasn't clear enough. The "StartupItems" isn't actually in System Preferences/Users & Groups/Login Items. It's in ~/Library/StartupItems/NUDC but I haven't figured out how to get there because both main Library and user Library are gone from finder. Note, however, that migration failed to move all my files from the old computer, which would explain the missing Libraries, so I am going to try migration again. Unless you guys advise me not to try, so I'll wait for your advice about migrating a second time. Thanks folks.

The Lion user Library has been made invisible by Apple just to confuse everybody.

Making your Lion User Library visible again can be done in several different ways from Terminal command to using the Option key.

This invisible Lion Library change has seen a good bit of discussion here if you want to try searching on the topic.

Option Key Method.

Press Option and select the Go Menu in Finder. With Option pressed the User's Library folder appears in the Menu list.

Select Library and it opens for use. As soon as you click in a different folder Library becomes invisible again UNLESS you drag the Library folder icon to your Sidebar where it will remain visible.

Thank you DDan. I've been told by others not to go near Terminal if I don't know what I'm doing, and believe me, I have barely a clue about computers. Therefore, I'll try the Option/drag method. By the way, on my old computer, there was a major Library and a minor Library, the minor one being attached to each individual account name and the major one affecting everyone's account, as I understood it. Which Library am I getting, and should I put it into my user account (house-with-my-name)?
Thanks.

1. Click on your desktop to be sure you're in Finder. Press <Shift><Command><g> to bring up the "Go to folder" requester. Enter ~/Library/StartupItems/ in the requester.

2. On my Lion machine, this fails because I have no Startupitems folder under ~/Library

Actually there are 3 Library folders. Since one is I your user account it means that if you create another user account PU will have 4 Library folders.

Using the "path" to describe each Library is useful. Path means the "route" from the root to a specific file / icon / folder.

Root means the top-most level. Open your hard drive and you will be at the root or top most level. The forward slash / is used between each stair step of a path. The tilde symbol ~ is commonly used to indicate your Home user account folder ( as a shortcut).

Library folders:

1. Library

2. System/Library

3. ~/Library

Your user account Library path, without using the tilde ~ shortcut symbol would be written as:

3. Hard Drive/Users/Your Account/Library

No, Apple decided to hide the Libraries, so new users would not play with them.

Do a web search to find articles on how to make them visible again.

I also think you will find the StartUpItems in Mac HD/ Library and not ~/Library, but then again I am only seeing one item in my StartUpItems.

iPad + stylus?

Posted by: "neelie" neeliec2000@yahoo.com   neeliec2000

I bought my iPad 2 last night (or early this morning!) from Apple.com! Saved $51 on the iPad, and $11 on the magnetic cover. I ordered the 32GB 3G black version, and can't wait to receive it. According to my receipt it should ship early next week.

So now I have some questions about using a stylus - do people use them on their iPads?

If so, does a stylus improve using the iPad? How?

I can see where it might help keep the screen cleaner but just wondering if it becomes cumbersome in any way?

iPad is designed to use your fingers and utterly not intended for stylus use. Stylus is 1990s technology.

One, two, and sometimes three fingers are used with the Apple touch screen.

I guess you could try 2 stylii sort of like chopsticks but it would be a bit awkward (sarcasm intended in a joking way :-) ).

If a stylus would work what would be the point of one other than losing about half of the functionality and features of an extraordinary touch screen system?

While true, there are a large number of stylus options for the iPad for sale. There are even Apps that support stylus input.

A stylus is useful for certain applications such as drawing, sketching, etc. where you need finer detail than the fat finger will allow. I still use a Wacom tablet with my iMac even though I have a Magic Trackpad; the pressure sensitive stylus has still to be replicated by Apple.

For most of the things you would use a iPad for, you don't need a stylus. Would you use 10 stylus for typing?

We use Xoom tablets at work and only in certain conditions can you see the fingerprints on them. I believe iPads have a coating to help keep it clean.

Have you ever misplaced your pen? Have you ever misplaced your finger? I know it is a guy thing, but if I have a shirt on I can clean my glasses, iPhone and iPad. But I do keep lens cloths in various places where I use one of the three items I mentioned.

A stylus is essential if you want to take a lot of notes, do artwork,
or, my favorite, want to do handwriting recognition.

The problem is getting a really good stylus for the iPad.

When I was at Macworld Expo last Janauary, I went and spoke with the
folks who were offering handwriting recognition for the iPad. I
figured that they would know best which stylus works best for
handwriting on the iPad. This is the one that was recommended
several times:

Just Mobile AluPen

ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1315613313&sr=8-5

I got one, and while it isn't thin like all the other styli, it works
wonderfully. It also comes in your choice of anodized aluminum
coloring.

I ordered one when I got my ipad, but I never needed to use it on my ipad.
I use it on my itouch if I have to type anything, or select something. My
fingers just don't work well enough on that smaller itouch.

MacPro Meltdown #2

Posted by: "Denver dan" denver.dan@verizon.net   denverdan22180

Fri Nov 25, 2011 12:28 pm (PST)

Howdy.

I've not participated much recently due to two MacPro meltdowns.

This time after same boot problems as 2 weeks ago I took it to Apple Store. They couldn't boot it either from their diagnostic drive even with RAM and hard drives removed.

Problem turns out to be the second and newer and faster video card failing. I'll run on the original video card until a new MacPro comes out.

I'd like to add that I've known several people personally who have had video failures with MacPros.

I suspected video card or logic board video I/O problems after once seeing a series of black stripped blocks of bars on screen after another failed boot effort.

As a learning thing for our group, I'll mention some of the symptoms and troubleshooting efforts.

It booted to just past the "post" chime, briefly showed the spinning gear and then stopped.

The "post" chime you hear when a Mac boots is actually the cheerful report of several diagnostics done to check RAM, drives, and some logic board things during each boot. If you ever boot and hear instead a set of 4 separate notes it's NOT a good thing. Older Macs used to produce a disaster sound to report dire problems — like a screaming squealing tire smashing glass and metal sound to report MAJOR dire problems.

I was able to sometimes boot the MacPro after doing a Zap of the PRAM and reset of the SMC. This was the same as the first meltdown 2 weeks ago. So to some degree this made it seem like an intermittent problem and those can be difficult to figure out.

However, after erasing hard drive and re-installing Lion and Applications and restoring files 2 weeks ago the thing ran and booted fine for two weeks.

At the Genius Bar, their initial troubleshooting routine is to do a standard boot. Then to boot from a diagnostic Apple HD with multiple system patroons on it.

Then the pulled out all 4 hard drives and attempted boot. Then pulled out RAM card A and a boot, then re-insert RAM card A and remove RAM card B.

Should have it back tomorrow morning (Saturday). Might have been a day sooner but store was closed for Thanksgiving Day which is just fine IMO. .

Maybe this long post will help someone to do future troubleshooting or lead someone to investigate and learn more about troubleshooting Macs.

Before you go restoring anything, what software changes have you made recently? Have you just open an iCloud account, or changed to iCloud syncing?

Have you checked the Mail Preferences/ Accounts?

Tell us more of what you have done recently.

Updated Little Snitch, it was not active, had to update and re enter key.

I did not mention in previous post: I'm currently on a limited inter
connection so I don't to redown load lot of stuff. (Verison MiFi2200)

The last email I got from this group was at 11:59, Dan, Sub: Finding
Library. So it must have been after that time. (which is EST 12:00 to
about 17:00)

I don't use Little Snitch and that should not have anything to do with this. I tried it and discarded it.

Have you checked the Accounts in Mail Preferences?

The times shown on your emails are relative. I received Dan's post at 11:08 am PST. And also depends on how often you have Mail set to check for messages.

Have you tried "Get All New Mail" under Mailbox in the menu bar? Have you checked your accounts in prefs.
Sometimes if your ISP is slow in responding while verifying your password it will time out and you have to force getting mail by using either the envelope icon or the menu bar item mentioned above.

Since you replied to my previous email, you are able to get some email.

Mail preferences only has MobileMe account.

I am not getting any mail from any other accounts, like gmail.com account.

To send these email I an using the Yahoo online mail editor.
Inbox mailbox only shows mail to my me.com account.

Most of my yahoo groups are moved by rules from inbox to other boxes. All the old mail is still in these boxes.

There are no gmail mailboxes, they are all gone.

You should be able to open your user Library folder, find the Mail folder there, and look in it to see if your Gmail mailboxes are still on the hard drive.

If they are and have message contents, then this a start to troubleshoot issue.

You could drag each of these folders to Desktop to make a sort of archive which can later be imported back into Mail should this be necessary.

I would be sure to restart Mac and relaunch Mail.

Check to see if a mail folder got dragged to a different folder or mailbox by accident.

Try the rebuild mailbox command individually on mailboxes you can see.

Make sure checking for Gmail is turned on in Mail preferences>accounts. I've seen it get turned off - rarely - after unusual problems.

Can't suggest anything else right now — no Mac running recent Apple Mail program to use for the moment to jog my weak memory with some visual clue.

Interesting article comparing Siri voice commanding on iPhone and MS Mobile Phone 7's TellMe voice command.

Article is in TUAW and includes side-by-side video of testing both devices.
