Migration fail

Just an update for those who were following my attempted migration from old MacBook 10.5.8 to new MacBook Air Lion. I've tried to get the darned thing to migrate for 3 days now, over and over and over, but no luck. It sits there, telling me it's doing it, the clock bar counting down, but only gets so far, saying typically, 1 hour 58 minutes remaining, when it stops. All my iPhotos and some of my iTunes won't migrate. Perhaps more, I don't know. It looks like about 20 Gigs won't go, as the old HD says 65 Gigs, and the new one won't get past 45 (Its a 128 Gig SSD).
I tried to get files off my backup drive, but it's a 200 Gig, so the MBA won't even start the transfer, being too small.
Mail works, though, as I'm typing this on the MBA. On the positive side, the lighted keyboard isn't so bad after all.
Anyone in Phoenix want to take a look at it? If not, I'll try the Apple Store. Thanks, folks.

I'm curious: do you have any huge files on the old machine? I couldn't do a migration from old to new MacBook Pro just a few weeks ago. I downloaded the trial version of iDefrag and discovered that right in the middle of my "free" space on my new computer, there were a few occupied blocks. Once I ran iDefrag, I could do the migration.
I think, however, that the Migration Assistant told me there wasn't enough room before copying any files from old to new machine, rather than copying many 10s of Gigabytes before seeming to lock up.
The trial version of iDefrag is free, and looking for fragmentation of the free space on your drive doesn't take very long so it might be worth a look...

James, do I download iDefrag on one, the other, or both computers before I try to migrate again?

Playing 3.WMV file
Posted by: "Biglt" eltay3@yahoo.com eltay3

Group,
I am trying to play a 3.WMV file from my Yahoo woodturning group. It seems to load, but when playing, the screen stays gray, even while the needle moves. (It is supposed to be silent, and is.) I have tried 2 versions, one from the group file, and the second straight from the original poster.
PowerBook G4
Power PC
10.5.8
Quick Time v 7.7
Can anyone lead me in the correct direction? (Rhetorical question.)
Thanks,
Larry

I'm not an expert but...
You need to have "FlipforMac" http://www.macupdate.com/app/ mac/17787/ flip4mac- wmv-player
installed.
If the video came in an email and you are trying to play it directly from the email, try instead to drag the file from the email to the desktop and then try to open it.
What you describe has happened to me a couple of times and that was the solution. In my case the video files came in emails from a Windows user.

I have several iphoto libraries. It could be a mess, but I use (shareware) iPhoto Library Manager to move pictures from one library to another. Works great. I've been using iPhoto Library Manager for several years. http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/ iplm/

I use a second photo library and it can be a mess when you have to switch photos from one library to another. I didn't do it often so I did it manually (export to folder on desktop, close, change libraries, import to new library.) This may have been fixed since version 8.2. Also, make sure you're importing to the right library.

There is a work-around to allow contextual menu plug-ins to function in 64-bit Snow Leopard and Lion:

Snow Leopard does not support contextual menu plug-ins in 64 bit applications which, if I understand it right, simply means that they don't work anymore.
QUESTION: If they don't work anymore shouldn't I then simply delete them all?

If you install BootCamp before you install Lion, you can use XP. If for some reason in the future you have to do a clean install of Lion, you may loose the ability to use XP. So plan on upgrading eventually.
If you install Lion, before installing BootCamp (in 10.6), then XP 7 won't work in BootCamp.
I understand BootCamp runs faster than Parallel, but you have to restart into BootCamp to run Windows.

I don't know if XP will run in Parallels 7, but I'd bet that it will. Windows 7 has as XP mode. The simplest way to find out is to buy the upgrade to Parallels 7 and find out.
If you have to go to Windows 7, I don't know what the cheapest route for you would be. Someone else needs to address that.
