It seems to me that Mail (v. 4.5) saves an attachment to ~/Library/Mail Downloads if, and only if, the attachment is opened by a double click. Otherwise (on my machine at least) the attachment remains where it was as an integral part of the email. Even if the attachment is 'saved', by clicking on Mail's 'save' button, the attachment is not included in ~/Library/ Mail Downloads.

There is an AppleScript by the name of "Mail attachment save script" written by Luke Jaeger which:
'...will mine a list of Mail messages for attachments and save them to a destination you choose. The script creates a subfolder for each message with attachments, named with the subject of the message and its date sent. All attachments are saved with their original names. Messages without attachments are ignored.'
However I have able only to find only discussions about the script, rather than the script itself. Unfortunately the discussions have all concerned difficulties with the script running under 'Lion'. I don't use 'Lion' so I can't pursue the matter.
However I have extracted the script from the discussion emails and find it does work on 10.6.8. If anyone would like to test it on 'Lion' I would be happy to send a copy.

Is it okay to "Trash" all the attachments that are in the Library Mail folder? If the attachments are ones that I have saved in my Documents or Downloads folder and want to keep would I also lose them from there?

I need some advice on doing an upgrade to Lion. I really would like to upgrade to Lion but have a few questions. I am running Parallels ver. 5 and using XP SP3 with Snow Leopard.
What I need to know is if I upgrade to Lion will I have to upgrade my version of Parallels(ver5)???? will I have to upgrade my Windows(XP sp3)?????
If I have to upgrade Windows can I just purchase an upgrade to Windows 7 or will I have to purchase a full program. Please give me specifics of which Windows ver I would need----32 bit or 64??? Pro??? etc.??
I run Windows so I can use my embroidery and quilting software nothing else.

Your Windows virtual machine should be fine just as it is, but I
believe you would need to upgrade Parallels to run properly on Lion.
Here's a knowledge base article on their site:

If one does not open an attachment, it doesn't show up as a file in the Mail Downloads folder. Once it it opened I can see it in Finder.
This seems very strange to me. That means I will have to go back through approx 300 email attachments to ensure that they were all opened so I can
find them.
Randy,
Thank you for your help. I appreciate you taking the time.

As you know attachments to list emails are not permitted so I will forward the script to your private address with some notes on how to work it.

I suspect the problem with 'Lion' (if there is one) may turn out to be a permissions issue -- but we shall see.

According to Roaringapps.com Parallels 6 or 7 is compatible with Lion, but v5 was not mentioned. According to info in the Parallel web site (http://kb.parallels.com/en/111578) neither 4 no5 will run in Lion.

Regarding Windows 7, you may have to run 32 bit. That's what I have to do in Fusion. I don't expect its that much different from Parallels in that regard. I purchased Windows 7 Pro and downloaded both the 32 bit version and the 64 bit version. I couldn't install the 64 bit version, even though my machine was booted into 64 bit.

John
Thanks so much for taking the time to answer my questions about upgrading to Lion.
If I upgrade to Lion and upgrade my Parallels to ver 7 do you think I can still run Windows XP????? or would I have to upgrade to Windows 7??

And if so since I'm already running Windows XP on Parallels do you think I can just purchase an upgrade to Windows 7??? I'm trying to find the least costly way of doing these upgrades.
Thanks again.

I got a stylus when I got a G2 Touch, a couple of years ago. Being used to using styli with WindowsCE devices, I thought I would need it. It was initially handy for typing on that teensy-tiny keyboard, until I realized iOS was 99.5% accurate in identifying the intended key from my fat fingers.
I have rarely used it since, but it does seem to facilitate fine line sketching in some drawing apps.
The 4" stylus covertly clipped to the side of my leather Touch case, but the new case for my G4 Touch can't accept it. It is now clipped into the pocket of my iPad case and probably will get very little use for either iThing.

Aha!

There is apparently a "restrictions" setting that hides Safari. Part of the parental controls. This is likely what happened.

To elaborate... Supposedly Safari can't be deleted (at least not easily) but it CAN be "turned off" which makes it invisible. The normal way of doing this would be to use "Preferences... Parental Controls..." which is where you might check first. If Parental Controls are on for the account, this might explain what happened to you. Reinstalling Safari "fixed" the problem because you had to authorize the install, which would reauthorize the app.

But even if Parental Controls are not "enabled", the setting might have been flipped by some corruption in the failure that caused you to restart.

Cheers,

Hmmm - interesting!

What I need are parental controls to keep my cat (who likes to walk around on the computer keyboard when I'm trying to work) from doing crazy things to my computer...

I suspect him of somehow doing this deed.

I have never understood the human mentality that *allows* pets to screw around with important things in their owners lives.

Buy — or build, perhaps from wood — a keyboard garage.

That looks pretty good - do you think it would fit over the top of my laptop?

The problem is that he jumps on when I'm working, not when I'm gone - it's an attention seeking thing - and sometimes I'm not quick enough to stop him.

How Do I Move My MacBook Pro iTunes Library to iCloud?

Posted by: "joesantoyo78757" joesantoyo@mac.com   joesantoyo78757

I'm having trouble understanding what to do, probably because I'm pretty computer illiterate.

I've just bought a new iPhone 4 which can connect to my new Mini Cooper through MINI Connect. Then presumably I should be able to play all the tunes in my MacBook Pro iTunes library in the car's sound system through iCloud and my iPhone 4.

But I can't seem to be able to get my computer tunes into the Cloud.

Please help anyone

Thanks !

You need to subscribe to iTunes Match ($25/year) in order to access your
entire iTunes Library via an iOS device

In iTunes - Store > Turn ON iTunes Match
Let it scan and match your Library
on iOS Device Settings > Music > iTunes Match > On
Open Music and it will populate with your library.

Otherwise you sync whatever music you want to your phone then just play
directly from the device.

Re: Mail suddenly slow

Thanks to all the people who made helpful suggestions. I did a Rebuild of the Mailbox (containing all our mail from Jan 1, 2006, over 31,000 messages, a paltry number, I agree) and after maybe 15 minutes it was all sorted (in the colloquial English sense of that word, meaning fixed, or amenable to our threats.)

Deleting Contextual Menu Items in Snow Leopard

Snow Leopard does not support contextual menu plug-ins in 64 bit applications which, if I understand it right, simply means that they don't work anymore.

QUESTION: If they don't work anymore shouldn't I then simply delete them all?

I thought I could just ignore the issue and let them stay where they are, but I am now getting error loading messages every now and then where some of these plugins seem to be involved. In Console it then says "no suitable image found. Did find: (…name and file path of the plugin…) mach-o, but wrong architecture". The spinning beach ball appears and in the end everything will freeze.

2 iPhoto libraries?

I was running out of room on my laptop so the guy at the Apple Store had me transfer all of my iphoto library onto my portable hard drive. I now have no pictures on my laptop.I also have my pictures ont the portable stored in folders as .jpegs so I can share them with someone on a windows machine.
I was wondering if I created a new iphoto library on my laptop so that if I didn't have my portable I could still edit them in iPhoto and transfer them to my portable later. The guy at the Apple store said that would create a nightmare and he would not recommend it. But if so, why does iPhoto give you the option to create a new library?
Will I create a problem having 2 different libraries?

No. Hit the option key while launching iPhoto and it will let you
choose your library.
