Re: Win 7 Boot Issue In Lion

The last time I actually used the Bootcamp software for the install was under 10.6, and then, it didn't allow installing on an external drive. Under Lion, I just usually create the partition with Disk Utility, boot from the Win 7 disc (ultimate), and install the standard Win way. I then use the 'Windows Support' software, as Apple calls it, for drivers and other things that Win 7 needs on the Mac.
I do have extra room on an external drive, left as free space. As soon as I bring my machine down, reset PRAM, and am able to boot from a Win disc, I'll try it.
Thanks for trying the install, and letting me know!

Oops, I called it bootcamp, but I did install exactly the way you described
using the Windows Support software I had to download (thought this was the
same as bootcamp). I tried it with Bootcamp Assistant and it would not let
me install on external drive.

Yes, it is called Bootcamp software. To get picky, I guess the combination of Bootcamp Assistant and the 'Windows Support' software are Bootcamp.
I have not found it necessary to use BA in a long time.
I just installed Linux on a 3rd partition on the internal drive, and did have Win 7 along with it until recently. Now, I'm trying to reinstall it. The disc should boot the machine regardless.
Like I said earlier, the PRAM affects the boot disk setting, so I've got to try to reset that.
I use rEFIt as well, to boot Linux or Windows, or OS X. That helps a lot.
Thanks.

I'm sure there were several. One thought is that it was an actual TV, Apple TV. Not just the box, but the flat-screen TV.

Heard that too, hard to believe. If so, I bet it will really be something
special. Just hope it is at least a 70" plasma. But, I also just heard
that a new Apple TV (the STB) is on its way - maybe it will be a big
breakthru product. Siri control?
I thought it would be something neat to keep. I kept my old iPhone 3G for
sentimental reasons.

I think it was in an interview of Isaacson on CNET that he mentioned the TV project. He said it would more than likely be the most simple, intuitive television on the market. It, supposedly, would change the entire market.
Where have we heard that before? :) Mobile phones maybe?

Right Click intermittent/flashes on some apps loaded on the Menu bar
Posted by: "Budd T" n7eoj@yahoo.com n7eoj
Tue Nov 15, 2011 9:27 pm (PST)
24" 3.06 GHz Core2 Duo iMac, w/4GB RAM, running 10.7.2.
Tonight I started and after everything got loaded, I wanted to get Time Machine to do a back up, but couldn't get the drop down menu. Then I tried unsuccessfully with Radium. this only occurs on some of the apps loaded in the right end of the Menue bar. Left & right buttons work fine elsewhere on the Desktop on within windows.
I thought the switch in the right button of my mouse had died. So I replaced it with a known good spare. The no go or intermittent behavior persisted.
Suggestions?

The first time you start Time Machine, it does a complete backup automatically. You should not interrupt this. Afterward, you can do manual updates from the menubar. I don't know, but I would suspect that access to the menubar menu for Time Machine would not be possible during the initial backup.
In other words, I would let it take it's course at the beginning. It should take hours to complete, if not days, depending upon how much data you have.
Radium? I beta test a program called Radium that's an internet radio program. Good one too!

I've read that using the name(s) of your pet(s) is a bad idea, and
that certainly makes intuitive sense. Even people who have fairly
minimal relationships with me know my cat's name!

Starting with Lion, if the iTunes Library is on an external drive and not accessible when you start iTune, then a new library is created on the internal drive. iTunes will hang and you have a hard time trying to force quit iTunes.
If he had moved the library to an external drive, then check the iTunes Prefs, Advanced tab and see which library it is pointing to.
I just ran into this problem. I have to move a copy of part of my iTunes library back to the internal drive and move in and out books and other things. Royal PITA.

He couldn't quit it either, even from the dock. He had to force quit it in order to stop the beach ball. We repaired permissions, removed the preferences, ran Disk Utility and Disk Warrior. The situation didn't change. So we then trashed the iTunes app and it's preferences, and downloaded a new copy of iTunes from Apple's website. After installing it, iTunes worked fine for a day. Now it's back to the beach ball and the inability to quit it. I saved the report that comes up when you force quit a non-responding app, if that would help anyone diagnose the problem. I didn't post it here because it is so long.

Strange, I have my iTunes library on an external drive, and have for a couple of OS releases now. iTunes doesn't do what you describe, to me.
Everything looks fine, no new library, no hanging.
Is this supposed to happen each time?

Nope it is not supposed to happen every time. Only when you start up iTunes and it can not immediately find the external library.
I've had mine on a Drobo since 10.4 or before, with no problems.
I spoke to a former AppleCare Supervisor, currently an Apple Store Genius, and he is the one that told me of the change. I had already noticed that my preference of choosing the Drobo would not stick through a restart. One additional item might be that aggravate the issue, I connect to the Drobo by WiFi.
Are you connected by wire to your external library? If iTunes can not immediately access the library, it will create another on the internal drive.

Why is why it's a good idea to defragment your drive more often than
once a year.
If you defragment your drive regularly, there is less to be moved
each time, and hence each defragmentation session takes much less time.
In addition, as free space becomes less and less available on your
hard drive, it becomes easier to defragment your drive if you have
been regularly doing so. In fact, if you haven't been regularly
doing so, it may become impossible to defragment your hard drive,
even though there is what would appear to be a lot of total free
space left.
