Find PowerPC Apps On Your System

X-post from another Group:
From: Christopher Stone <listmeister@thestoneforge. >com
<snip>
Hey Folks,
We've had a couple of discussions about finding and removing PowerPC applications from Lion.
A freeware utility showed up on MacUpdate yesterday that makes this simple. I've tried it out, and it works.
PPCtoTrash 1.0
http://www.macupdate.com/app/ mac/40880/ ppctotrash
PPCtoTrash will find and display a list of PowerPC applications on your hard disk. Selected items can be moved to the trash, moved to a designated folder or revealed in the Finder.

Actually, I started running it last night. There are some oddities:
No sound (output or input)
Only one display resolution is supported (for my MacBook Pro, it's 1024 X 768, so running the VM in Lion's full screen mode doesn't really fill my 1440 x 900 screen.
Although networking over Airport is supported, there's no access to the WiFi interface from within the virtual machine. I'm totally in the dark about how this works. Fusion offers two networking modes (bridged and NAT). I typically use the former, which basically gives the VM its own MAC address (not sure how this is done). When I look at my LAN using iNet, it finds a device at the IP address that the VM reports, but the Mac address of the VM is not the same as what iNet reports for it. It's not the MAC address of the host machine, either.
Later today I'll take my laptop to my office, where I usually work using my LED Cinema Display with the laptop closed. This will be pretty ugly, I think, if the only display resolution supported there is the same 1024 x 768, but I suspect that won't really be a problem because I'll run the VM in Single Window mode rather than full-screen mode, and because I'll likely use the Snow Leopard VM for one purpose only - running Quicken.
It's somewhat disorienting looking at the VM in fullscreen mode if multiple apps are running. Command-Tab shows what's running in the VM, of course, not what's running on the host in Lion. perhaps this would be less jarring if I used Fusion's "Unity" mode.
Another quirk is that 2-finger scrolling in the Snow Leopard VM goes in the Lion direction, not the usual Snow Leopard direction, but that happens in my Win 7 VMs as well.
Bottom line, I think, is that this will be useful for those of us still attached to Quicken, useLESS for people who want to run PPC apps that deal with sound or graphics, unless I've misconfigured somehow.

I successfully installed Leopard (10.5) as a VM on Fusion 4.1. I am running
Lion (10.7) on a quad-core Mac Pro.
I haven't had a need for sound, so I can't comment on that, but Appleworks
runs as well as other PPC apps.
I did discover one quirk, though. If you assign memory to a VM that is not
a multiple of 1024 MB, you will lose control of your keyboard and mouse.
Not sure if it is a Fusion bug or if MAC OS just doesn't know how to deal
with a strange amount of RAM.

Can you adjust your monitor resolution? What monitor do you have attached to the Mac Pro?

No. I only have one resolution available (1024 x 768) and only millions of
colors.
I am using a Samsung Syncmaster 22.5 inch widescreen LCD flatpanel on the
Mac.

I've had a chance to look at Android apps as my girl has a generic Android tablet. Compared to iOS, there are definitely not as many free or lite apps as iOS. And, the ones that actually DO something useful, are few and far between, IMO.
I do read some on her tablet, and help her when she needs to do something that should be simple, with the operating system, but that's as far as it goes. I was looking forward to seeing it and using it, but, in the end, it's not really all that special.
I am not saying this by any way of severe prejudice. Some does exist, but not an overpowering amount.
I'm saying this because facts are facts.
The Fire appears to be an Amazon based consumption device, geared at Amazon's content.

People who need to justify to themselves why their purchase is "better" than an iPad are just as annoying as iPad lovers.
Having used both, I have to say I find the iPad and iOS a much more operating environment.
I know that my previous Nokia phone had all the same abilities as my iPhone 4, but it is just much easier to use the iPhone to get at them.
I find that "ease of use" worth the few extra dollars.
Haters are just as bad as fanboys.

I don't hate Kindles. I just don't use them because they don't respond as well or as simply as my iPad. They are unable to do all that I do with my iPad.
Things are always cheap for a reason, and it usually means they aren't built as well. Screens are the perfect example.

Macs on sale at Best Buy

Not sure if anyone is in the market for an iMac, MB Air or MB Pro but Best
Buy has all on sale from $70-$200 off - of course they are only the
standard configurations - the $1299 Air is $1099, etc.
Supposedly sale ends on Weds 11/23 so these are "Pre Black Friday" deals...

Because of a very bad customer service experience a few years ago, I
never shop at Best Buy. But, if you do decide to take advantage of
this sale, make sure you get the Apple warranty and services. I just
don't trust BB.

I agree, based on my own experiences. I've bought two things in store
and found at home that they both had been used and returned. Best Buy
had sold them as new. I also have used their in-store pickup for
buying online and had to wait much longer than if I had just picked it
and taken it to the cashier myself. Hopefully others have had better
experiences.

The warranty, though, is from Apple, not (as a friend of mine refers
to it) Wurst Bye. Therefore, if their prices are better and they are
not selling gray market stuff but real Apple stuff, with an Apple
warranty, then how good or bad they are is immaterial.

If they did that then they committed fraud and should be reported to
the authorities. Contact your state's attorney general's office. If
enough people do that then it will put a stop to it.

Magic Trackpad Gesture
Posted by: "Harry Flaxman" harry.flaxman@comcast.net hflaxman001

When I first set up my Magic Trackpad, I had enabled a 'gesture' or click that allowed me to tap on the top of the pad to grab an item, once it was highlighted, and then just move the item by swiping one finger across the pad or wherever, to just move it, and then tapping again to release the item.
I have not been able to duplicate this setting anywhere. I wind up having to hold my finger down on the pad all the while that I am moving the item. It's a pain.
Does anyone have any idea where this setting may be enabled? I don't believe it was MagicPrefs, but I could be mistaken. I haven't used that program for a long time.

Mail suddenly slow

The Mail program on one of our computers has suddenly gone on a slowdown strike. When it opens, the beachball runs and runs and only reluctantly yields control after 40 seconds or more. Mail opens normally on the other two computers in our house.
The machine is running Snow Leopard 10.6m and is a iMac Intel Core Duo, 2.4 GHz with 3 GB of memory, and was purchased in January 2008. Mail version is 4.5, and the System is 10.6.8.
Repaired permissions several times, to no avail. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

The first question that comes to mind is, does this Mail program include an account that is not present on the other computers?

I do not know what I did but I lost my icon on the bottom screen for my documents.
Do you know how I get it back?
Thanks

I presume you're talking about losing the icon that was in the Dock. To replace it, open your HD, open Users (that's you), and locate the Documents folder. Drag the folder down onto the the right hand side of the Dock, next to or near the Trash. When you get it into position, the icons will spread and open space for it. When that happens, just drop it there.
You can not put a folder on the left hand side of the spacer in the Dock, you if the icons don't spread to accommodate the icon, move it to the right. Make sure that you bring it down far enough so that the Dock recognizes the action you are attempting to perform.

iTunes - iCloud - Hughesnet

If this has been addressed already, my apologies.
I just received the update announcement for iTunes 10.5.1, read the descriptor, and am concerned about data transfer to iCloud. Like thousands of others, I have Hughesnet satellite internet as my only provider. Hughesnet limits data transfer to about 400 Mb total (up and down) in a 24 hour period, with serious financial and / or speed penalties for exceeding the threshold. I am concerned that upgrading to the iTunes 5.xx on my iMac and devices (2 iPads and 1 iPod) will cause me problems in the amount of data being transferred to and from my network. Any thoughts? (I have a grand daughter living with me while she goes to college. She uses her iPod constantly and has a sizeable music library which she downloaded a little at at time to avoid data transfer penalties.)
thanks.
