Not to be obvious (but it's time for that) but have you checked to see if you are "plugged in." ;)

But that, I mean are you sure Flip4Mac is installed? This is really the only way to play avi or WMV on Mac. Check by opening Preferences. You should have a Flip4Mac item in Preferences. Open this and checked the Upgrade tab which will tell you if F4M is installed and working.

Flip4Mac should allow you to play anything wrapped in WMV or avi that is "standard" but you can have all kinds of stuff wrapped in WMV that is not standard at all, just like Quicktime. I'm guessing you have some type of "camera" file. There are camera codecs that can be wrapped in wmv or avi but then can't be played on Macs with F4M. You may simply not be able to play such items without using a PC to convert (or possibly installing the Mac version of the camera software if it exists).

I would suggest you install Quicktime 7. It can handle some things that QT 10 can't. And use the Info panel to see if QT tells you the codec. Even if QT can't play, it may report the codec, and that may help you find a player. For example, the WMV could contain the mkv codec which is relatively new. You might be able to play this with other players, but not with QT.

Perian was a good suggestion. You should also install VLC player. It's always worth trying with QT can't play something. And there's also FFMPEG.

Cheers,
tod

I've really never used VLC and just direct Handbreak to the disc I want it to convert. I'll try VLC. I'll also check the version. I downed the latest that was available right after I installed LION.
Thanks for the tip.

With older Handbrake versions (and by old I mean the last 0.9.5 release, I've been using the SVN nightlies for some time) I found it didn't always pick the right one and this helped. The latest builds are a lot better, I don't recall a situation recently where Handbrake got it wrong, but I still check just to be sure.

I've seen many slot loading CD/DVD drives in Mac laptops and iMacs go bad.

If you have Apple Care, bit the distance bullet and use it. Try calling first and explain the distance issue. They might come up with something easier.

BTW, knock on wood, the tray loading DVD in my tower has burned well over 1.000 DVDs. I added a BluRay burner to the 2nd optical bay and the first 2 brand new units (Pioneer model) were defective. 3rd unit is an LG brand and does fine. Fortunately I bought from OWC which has good tech support and honors their warranties. OWC was very good.

Silly question, but you DID eject the first disc, didn't you?

One more thing to try, but I fear it won't help. Start the computer
with the mouse button depressed. If you do have a stuck CD in there
that will eject it. In your case you do not have one, but it seems
maybe to think you do; the levers or whatever that hold the disc in
place are probably fouled up, sort of like typewriter keys (Remember
those?) getting tangled with each other.

>Should I phone Apple Care?

I can't see why NOT to do that, assuming you are covered for phone support.

To be honest, I think contacting this group for suggestions IS what
you should be doing. If my idea and/or another does not do the trick
then phoning Apple Care (assuming it is a free call for you) is the
way to go. I do like your idea of giving them a heads up so the part
is at the Apple Store when you take it in. With luck, then, the three
days will be one.

Thanks for your reply. I own approximately 60 apps for my iPhone. Many of them are on my phone. As of right now 30 of them have updates.
My iTunes is updated. I am using Lion, the latest version.
I want to update my apps on my MacBookPro. There used to be a button on the lower right screen of the apps menu in iTunes that allowed you to update the apps.
Now it does not appear on my screen.

I can update these apps on my phone, but wanted to update them on my computer and was wondering if anyone else was having the same problem.

I would like to keep my MacBookPro updated, but the only way I can do that is to update my iPhone and then sync.
Does this help?

Click on Apps in the left pane under library inside iTunes. Then in the right pane, at the bottom, you'll find a button that says Check for Updates. Click that, and then download all the updates. You'll probably have to sign in with your Apple ID to download the updates, if you're not already signed in. Hope this helps.

I found the problem. The window for iTunes was too big. The button was covered by my Dock. So, if anyone is using iTunes to update apps, make sure the lower part of the iTunes window is visible. Thanks to all who tried to help.

Screen Flickering on my Macbook Pro

Posted by: "arjunsinghal" arjunsinghal@yahoo.com   arjunsinghal

Mon Nov 28, 2011 10:35 am (PST)

Hi

I have a MacBook Pro Late 2008 Edition. For the past few months now, I am experiencing the screen to be flickering randomly, every few minutes. I have been taking it to the Authorised Service Provider, who has readily been changing one part after another without a successful diagnosis of the problem and the screen flicker just doesn't go. They have replaced the SuperDrive, the Battery, the Touchpad, the Screen Assembly and the Logic Board. Pretty much, there is nothing more left to change, but the problem is persisting. I have even tried swapping power adapters, but this continues to happen.

As of November 17th 2011, Customer Relations acknowledged that the MacBook Pro needs to be replaced, but on November 21st Apple seems to have changed the policy specifically aimed at India, that they will not provide replacements in India. There are no governmental regulations that stop apple from providing the necessary replacement for a faulty product in India, yet I have been singled out in the case, even though I have been running around in circles with Apple Service Providers trying to get a resolution to the problem.

Now Customer Relations is asking me to ship the notebook to someone in Singapore where they can provide the replacement, but I do not have any close friends or relatives who I can work with to have this done. In the past, Apple has been providing replacement if necessary, and I am feeling completely lost with the quality of service I am receiving from Apple. I seriously feel as though Apple changed policy after discussing with me, and singled me out to not provide proper service for the product which is covered under the Apple Care Protection Service.

Arjun
