I suppose one of the reasons for these passwords is that the user can easily remember them. Here is how I solved the remembering problem. The first part of my password is the abreviation of a certain foreign word meaning 'born,' the next part is the last two digits of my birth year, the third part are the initials of my high school's name, the last part is the last two digits of the year I graduated from that school. An alternate password was constructed from the initials of my college degrees and the last two digits of the year in which the degree was taken. Both are very easy to remember, very difficult to break, but a very close family member could dope them out.

FAT32? Surely you would use NTFS for any current Windows (XP onwards, and

Unfortunately, Disk Utility will not do NTFS unless you have one of the plug-ins that are sold to do so. The only reason I partition in that manner is so that when I do the WIn 7 install, the intended partition sticks out and I won't choose the wrong one for the Win installer to format.
Bootcamp assistant is really not needed for anything other than downloading the new Botocamp software, drivers, etc.

It's looking at this point, as if I have to reset the SMC. I will do this later on tonight. The machine isn't seeing any bootable disc, aside from an OS X disc, and I know better than that. The iMac is able to recognize LInux install discs, labeling them as Windows, and actual Windows discs. I saw this up until a few days ago. Lion was definitely not the culprit.

I assumed you were in a Windows environment, real or virtual. Your strategy
makes perfect sense if you can reformat it when it matters.

Sure Otto. The Win installer will inform you that the partition selected is unusable with Win 7. It has the option to load drivers and advanced where the format utility for the install is. It also warns that there may be system files on the partition that the manufacturer has placed there and erasing them may make the machine unusable. I think that M$ has gone way out of their way to warn on things in this release.
Anyway, it is pretty usual for me to install a Bootcamp partition, and they do away with it a couple of weeks later, only to recreate it a couple of months down the road. This is dependent upon what I need it for. Granted, a VM might be the way to go, and I own both Fusion and Parallels, having tested for both of them, however, I find that speed and total compatibility aren't there using a VM.

I got this one messed up, it's PRAM that affects the startup disk, not the SMC, but doing both couldn't hurt!

Harry,
I successfully installed Windows using Bootcamp on my MBP, no problem
booting from the Win7 DVD. I installed the Pro 64 bit version. I
installed on an external drive since I didn't want it on my internal drive.
I guess that doesn't matter. Had I installed it on the internal drive, it
would have been on Partition 4 instead of 3 (Lion Recovery partition was on
3).

Re: iPhone bluetooth connection to car radio
Posted by: "Bob Cook" cookrd1@discoveryowners.com cookrd1

Joan,
Allow me to give you another alternative. I use a BlueAnt S4. It is a
bluetooth speakerphone that supports A2DP (necessary for audio streaming,
so whatever you get, make sure your chosen device supports this). The S4
has very loud volume which is really great since some of my cars are pretty
noisy. As an added bonus, it has a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that
last a very long time. To preserve the value of my cars, replacing the
original radio with a modern radio is not an option. You can find the S4
on sale for around $80. It works fine as a speakerphone and for listening
to audio. However, if you wanted to listen to music and you elect to not
replace your radio, you should consider a portable bluetooth speaker such
as from Logitech or iHome.
Also, I use my S4 by my pool, hot tub and even inside the house. My phone
is my radio (Wunderadio or Tunein Radio Pro) and I just carry my S4 with me
like I would a radio....except it is more portable, rechargeable, and
allows me to take and make phone calls.
However, if you still want to get a replacement radio, I would first get
one with an iPhone or audio input jack AND be sure that your replacement
radio is a direct fit. Some of the combo bigger radios are bigger than the
standard 1 DIN mounting space.

Re: iPhone bluetooth connection to navigation display

I drive a Mercedes Benz with Bluetooth. My cell phones connect and come over the speaker and the phone book on my iPhone is displayed on the navigation display. That is also where I set my audiobooks to play but they are not blue tooth but connect by a wine in the glove box,
Anyway this conversation reminded to tell you Siri doest work in my car. Boohoo I love using Siri to make calls but she can't hear me. Whenever I get a call in the car if I have an audiobook playing it is automatically muted while I speak to the person calling. So, the car is treating Siri like she is an audiobook I think.

Thanks for the suggestions. I am not really anxious to replace my radio, especially because if I did so, I would lose the CD player that I sometimes use. I just wanted a reliable way to listen to my audiobooks on my iPHone. If either the BlueAnt S4 or a portable bluetooth speaker would work, I would prefer that (especially since I could take it with me when I visit my grandson (oh, yeah, and his mother and father) in Montana. You just saved me a passel of money. Tante graze,

Jay, I'm afraid I don't have any experience using Toast's Tivo
Transfer, but I thought I'd mention that iTivo is a free app that lets
you download recordings, and subscribe to series recordings that get
downloaded and added to iTunes automatically.

Jim,
Thanks. I tried iTivo - it initially didn't work until I downloaded a version of tivodecode that was compiled on Intel chips. However it seems really slow - not sure if this is an issue with Lion or that is how it worked.

Do you find Toast Tivo Transfer to be a lot faster? Mine doesn't seem
to be too slow, but I have a fairly decent network for transfer.
Although those 8GB HD recordings do take quite awhile....

Yes. Toast transfers an entire hour in about 15-20 minutes. The encoding to iTunes is slow but it didn't seem to take the full processor for the G5. I thought a recent Mac-mini would be much faster.

Yeah, well, it's largely an individual anatomy thing. Some of us can do everything wrong and never get carpal tunnel syndrome, and others can do everything right, and get it anyway.

I just tried to save an individual file to the root directory in Lion: Finder wouldn't let me, stating that I didn't have the correct permissions (I'm signed in as an admin user). However, the same dialog says I can change permissions on the file to enable saving to that location. I'm assuming that if I did so, the file would be available to every user.
But this whole thing is so unnecessary. Why doesn't she just create her temporary photo folders on her own Desktop. Maybe she doesn't realize that even the Desktop belongs to her User account. Hard Drive/Users/
Make a folder, put the photos into it. delete it when she's done.
I'm not understanding the problem here. I have used Windows 40 hours a week for at least 30 years. I put most of my temporary files in folders on the Desktop. When done, I put them into My Documents or My Photos. or onto a remote server, and delete them from my own computer.
In all those years I don't think I have EVER put a file directly on the C: dive, and can't imagine why I would have.
