My Apple "Contacts" program now has a duplicate of every single record in its database. I know I did it when trying to sync my Mac with iCloud, iPad, iTunes, etc. (what a PITA) I'm on OSX 10.7.
What is the fastest, easiest, most reliable way to remove the duplicates? I'm sure I am one of thousands who have tripped over this land mine.
"Card > Look for Duplicates" does not workit only finds two duplicates (same name with different data).
Thanks,
Lou

Additional info and clarification...
My iPad and my iCloud Address Books (iCloud when accessed via the web) seem to have one record each, as it should be. ONLY my Mac Address Book (ie, Contacts) has duplicate records.

Are you on iCloud? Is one set of Contacts "On My Mac" and the other "iCloud" with both being present in "All Contacts"? If that's the case, they won't remain duplicates, depending on how you edit them; new contacts will be added to one set or the other, and edits of existing contacts won't show up in both places.
If that's your problem, you need to disable the "Contacts" choice in iCloud Preferences on your Mac, delete the "On My Mac" contacts, then re-enable contacts and synchronize with iCloud.
I've removed the "On My Mac" set twice now, once of my desktop Mac, once from my laptop. I don't know what made the local set return, but it doesn't happen often in my experience.

In which case, I would:-
1. Back up your Address Book (File > Export).
2. Delete all cards.
3. Sync with your iPad.

Jim,
I think you are on to something here. If I go into Address Book Preferences and select Accounts, I have two accounts listed: iCloud and On My Mac. Both check boxes under On My Mac are UNchecked (sync with Yahoo and Sync with Google). Under the iCloud Account in Address Book, the check box called "Enable this account" is checked. If I UNcheck Enable this Account, all my duplicates go away. But, don't I WANT that enabled so my Mac works with iCloud?
In System Preferences, I have iCloud set to sync Mail & Notes, Contacts, Calendars, Bookmarks, Documents & Data. Everything else is UNchecked. If I uncheck the Contacts under iCloud Preferences, I get a message saying iCloud contacts will be removed from this Mac but will still be available on other devices using iCloud. But. won't that break the link between my Mac and iCloud? That was the whole reason for setting this up in the first place.
Then, there's a Mail, Contacts & Calendars Preference under System Preferences (with a white "@" inside a blue circle icon). Is that an @me Pref? It has the same exact check boxes as my iCloud Preferences in the previous paragraph. Again, if I try to uncheck the Contacts, I get the above message.
I find all these locations and preferences very confusing. I'm about ready to disconnect completely from iCloud, Gmail, iPad and just do it the kludgy, old fashioned way. Now, where's my old Rolodex? ;>)
Thanks,
Lou

Jim,
I went into Address Book Preferences and temporarily unchecked Enable this account for my iCloud account. That made all the iCloud contacts disappear from the Address Book on my Mac, leaving only my "local" contacts. Then, I deleted all the local contacts from my Address Book (I had a backup to be safe). This left me with a totally empty Address Book.
Then I went back into Address Book Preferences, selected my iCloud Account and re-enabled this account. All the Contacts living in iCloud now show up properly as single entries instead of duplicates on my Mac. The iPad is also correct.
Thanks...your lead helped me to zero in on the problem. Not sure if this is the right solution, but so far, it seems to work.
Now, If I could only figure out how to get Gmail to update automatically from iCloud, I'd really be happy.

That's exactly what worked for me. However, I should qualify that by saying it worked for several months, and recently I had to do it again because once again I had duplicates (only on one Mac). But the same fix worked again.
The real problem is not being careful which contact (the local or server-based one) you're editing if you've not discovered that there are duplicates.
There are some other bugs in iCloud and contacts as well. For example, I sometimes find that things I put in the "Notes" field get doubled, tripled, even quadrupled.

Makes me wonder where the refurbs come from?
Seriously, some things are serviceable - the screen and the battery for instance.
Everything can be fixed but you do need to find the knowledge, the tools, and often the will. In the case of an iPad, I suspect most (incuding Apple) would deem difficult repairs not worthwhile. At least not in the US. I suspect nice iPads are shipped back to China for refurb.
I'm sure there is someone out there who knows how to "reset" an iPad MB, but I suspect he/she is bound by an NDA. ;)

Apple has stated that many refurb's come from institutional orders where 250 were ordered, and it turned out they only needed 220. The other 30 are returned, thoroughly checked out, and sold as refurb's with full warranty.

If, in a business relationship, I had a client significantly damage a product I owned, like an iPad, I would inform them that "You broke it, you bought it", then charge them for replacement cost, and go buy a replacement.

Odd problem - I have never heard of that happening and I know of at least a

May I presume that you have a Wifi-only iPad?
Or is it that your iPad cellular carrier has no coverage wherever "up north" is?
"Datajack" appears to be "Yet Another Mifi Solution"
If you want a data plan comparable to what I have on my (3G) iPad, it will be the initial $90 (or whatever you can get via Amazon, CNet, or whatever) PLUS $40 per month (for what I get from AT&T for $30/month).

I am retired military, medically and at my age (68) I simply cannot afford to
buy anything but refurbished hdw.
I want to buy an iPad but - can a 2 or 3 be upgraded to 120gb or larger HDD?
Obviously, an iPad 16 costs a lot less than a 32 or 64 but can I buy an OCX
SSD and upgrade the HDD and/or the RAM? or can it be done commercially?
MacPro out of date?
in re the MacPro which I am using now, it appears that I cannot
update/upgrade the OS-X 10.6.8 to Mountain Lion or whatever the latest is
because of the limitations of the mobo, etc. Can I buy a latest version mobo
to keep me going and preclude my spending $2500+ for the latest machine?
iow as an example, my iPhone 4S 32 has a new CPU but that is apparently
required to upgrade to the latest OS as I do not believe that you can run the
i os5?? on older iPhones.
I would appreciate any suggestions, answers possible. It is all quite
confusing but I do know that my MacPro is perfectly good but apparently it is
a victim of planned obsolescence.
Thanks

First, what CPU/graphics intensive work are you doing with the machine?
And what is it about the performance that makes you want to upgrade?
> I want to buy an iPad but - can a 2 or 3 be upgraded to 120gb or larger HDD?
No.

No.

That would depend on whether or not it can do what you want to use it for.
Merely being "old" doesn't necessarily mean it is out of date.
> in re the MacPro which I am using now, it appears that I cannot update/upgrade the OS-X 10.6.8 to Mountain Lion or whatever the latest is because of the limitations of the mobo, etc.
It can be updated to 10.7.4 (Lion), but not to Mountain Lion.
> Can I buy a latest version mobo to keep me going and preclude my spending $2500+ for the latest machine?
Probably, but it isn't a task *I* would be willing to undertake.

It can be made SIGNIFICANTLY faster by installing a SATA SSD "hard drive" such as:
<http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/SSD/OWC/ >
You could probably put everything except your User files on a 128 GB SSD for around $130.
Or...
A refurbished iMac 21.5-inch 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7 could be purchased from Apple with a full warranty, eligible for Applecare, for $1450:<http://store.apple.com/us/product/G0M50LL/A >
