1. I assume that if someone finds it and does not attempt to return it, they want to use it for them selves or sell it to someone else who wants to use it.

2. Each mobile phone (no matter who manufactures it) has a unique number, which will become know to the service provider when the phone is registered with the provider.

3. IMO, governments around the world should require their mobile phone service providers to maintain a registry of lost and stolen phones, and compare the unique number of each new customer's phone with the registry. If the phone is found to be on the registry, the mobile phone service provider should inform their customer that service cannot be provided for that phone, but if the phone is returned to them, no questions will be asked and a standard reward (say perhaps 10% of the value of the phone) will be paid in cash. The mobile phone service provider then should inform the person who lost the phone about this. That person should then provide the mobile phone service provider with money to pay the reward, shipping charges, and a small service fee. The mobile phone service provider then mails the phone back to its owner, and everyone is happy!

4. Until such a utopian agreement is made, and if the suggestion to call his own phone doesn't work, perhaps Mahesh can contact the mobile phone service providers in the nation in which he lost the phone, provide them proof that he owns the phone, and ask them to recover it for him.

How well does Find My Phone work if the finder/thief removes the SIM right away. That happened to a friend of mine. Does each iPhone have a permanent, traceable ID?

Alvin for Senator!!!

LOL!!! But seriously, a lot of proposals have been made but only a few have been legislated. I don't want to think that telecoms companies are lobbying against such laws. But, hey! Who gains from sales of new phones to people who just lost their old ones to thieves?

Bill, have you tried to use iCloud from Vista or Win 7 (I have not)? According to this Apple site, it sure looks like it's supposed to.

It was a type-o, it should have been iCloud is not compatible with XP.
iCloud only works with Vista and 7.

I have been using it on Win7 since Beta 1...

Yes, I said call River and each time it said play_____ and started playing a different song each time. My son thought it was hilarious. Not very helpful to me. :-)

You have to really enunciate and speak slowly. I got a lot of Franz Lizst playing when I asked for Johnny Mathis.

When I hold the button and voice control comes up, iPod options scroll across the screen. Is that what happens when others use it?

I had a hotel key card that stopped working. I had put it in a pocket in my purse, next to my iPhone 4. The hotel clerk said the card was demagnetized from being next to my phone. I don't know if it's true, but I've avoided putting my hotel cards next to my phone since then.

YMMV.

I haven't upgraded my old MacMini to Lion yet, so I can't use the cloud. I plan to upgrade my iPhone 3GS and iPad 2 to OS 5 today. I'll set them up to exchange info via the cloud. I don't think that will allow me to set up a Mail filter for them, will it?

If so, you should be able to set the filter there, as well as, or instead of, in Mail itself.

"Lock" screen I never saw before....

Posted by: "Charles" the_chuckmann@yahoo.com   the_chuckmann

Thu Nov 3, 2011 6:09 am (PDT)

I had an odd thing happen yesterday. And I liked it - but I cannot duplicate it.

I had a weird lock screen. Well, it wasn't really locked, but the screen reverted there after I hadn't touched the screen for a while. I was listening to a podcast, stopped the podcast because I was going to be getting off work, and then left the iPhone alone as I was doing my "end of the day" stuff for work.

Anyway.....

The top of the screen had the local weather in a banner (the same weather that I go to if I open the native weather app). The bottom of the screen had a scrolling stock ticker (again, the same info from the native stocks app). In the middle of the screen I had all my Facebook, message, and eBay notifications.

This was very cool, and I feel would be useful. But I have no idea HOW this happened, or how to set it to do this again.

I did a search, and found this:

http://www.ilikemyiphone.com/2010/04/04/display-missed-calls-sms-email-weather-calendar-on-iphone-homescreen-element-on-cydia-free/

Basically, this article shows what my screen looked like. However, my iPhone is NOT jailbroken, and I am not aware of any app I have that would cause this. In fact, I have only bought one new app recently, and it has nothing to do with this at all, I am certain.

I have an AT+T, not unlocked, not jailbroken, iPhone 4 with iOS 5, and nothing unusual added.

Any ideas? Is this just some new feature I didn't read about yet?

Put your finger up top on the bar where the clock is and pull down. It's
the notification center. This works when the phone is unlocked.

That is the new notification screen in iOS5. Swipe down to get the screen
and up to get rid of it.

Wow! And, thank you!

So, is this an iOS 5 thing, or have I been missing this for a long time?

I have seen this a couple times, but I wasn't sure how to access it.  I had taken a screen-shot of it, and meant to email the group.

Thanks for telling me how to access it!

One thing - can a use customize what shows up on this screen?  Right now mine shows the weather, voicemails, CNN and eBay.  I see the X to close it, but I didn't know if I could add more to it.

Watch this 5 minute video about iOS5. They use an iPad for the demo but
most of the features will work on the iPhone.

New Amazon iPhone App Blends Augmented Reality With eCommerce

Sent to you by Bill Boulware via Google Reader: New Amazon iPhone App
Blends Augmented Reality With eCommerce via Mashable! by Todd Wasserman
on 11/3/11

Amazon has released its own twist on Google Goggles â€" an augmented
reality iPhone app that recognizes objects your phone sees and then
gives you the option to buy them.

The Flow Powered by Amazon app, developed by Amazon unit A9, claims to
recognize tens of millions of products from books and DVDs to packaged
electronics to toys.

We tried the app, and while it didn’t recognize everything, it was able
to work as advertised in a couple of cases. (Amazon suggests pointing
the app to a bar code on the product if it doesn’t recognize it.)

Amazon’s use of the iPhone camera to recognize and classify objects was
preceded by Google, which released Google Goggles, a similar
technology, for Android in December 2009 and for the iPhone last
October.

So far, although some marketers, like HTC and Disney, among others have
used Google Goggles for ad campaigns, Google hasn’t yet focused the app
on e-commerce.

Identifying and buying products is, it seems, only the beginning of
augmented reality apps. Earlier this year, German appliance maker Bosch
released an iPad app in August that lets consumers design their kitchen
by photographing Bosch products they see in stores.
