Dan,
Thanks for the suggestions. I don't think I want to spend the $180
(lowest upgrade price I could find) for Filemaker Pro. I'm thinking
Bento might be all that I need. Do you have any experience with that
- especially converting some database from Filemaker Pro to Bento?

I don't know what version your FMP is, but have you tried updating to just the next version?
So if yours is 11.0.1, then apply the updater for 11.0.2 then 11.0.3 etc all the way to 11.0.4.
Some applications need to be updated one revision at a time. Others can jump.

Jay,
As long as you export your data BEFORE you upgrade to a standard format (CSV, TXT, db, etc) you should then be able to import it into any program, even Numbers.

Check out:
PDFPen $60
http://www.smilesoftware.com/ PDFpen/
You can nicely annotate PDF's with:
Formulate Pro (free)
http://code.google.com/ p/formulatepro/
You can just use Preview to combine PDF's:
http://www.macosxhints.com/article. php?story= 2007111419180662 4
http://www.macworld.com/article/ 143023/2009/ 09/
combine_pdf_snow_leopard. html
http://www.macworld.com/article/ 145129/2009/ 12/pdftips. html
PDF2RTFService (free)
http://www.devon-technologies. com/download/ index.html
(scroll to bottom of page)
allows any program that can read RTF documents (including OS X's
included TextEdit) to open a PDF document as an editable RTF document
and save it in RTF format!
(Assuming that the PDF document isn't a graphic image of a text
document. PDF2RTFService does not do OCR.)
The latest version of Preview allows you to do quite a bit of
editing. For instance you can:
a) highlight (in yellow), strike through or underline text
b) encircle anything on the page with a lasso of any shape, size or
colour
c) add marginal notes (in a side column) of any length, anywhere in
the document
d) add new text in any font, any colour, any size, anywhere in the
document where there is space
e) individual pages can be dragged out of or into the document or
deleted from the document
f) conversion to a PostScript file which can be edited and re-
converted to PDF

It's totally not true that Preview can't combine PDF files. Just open one, then drag another to the bookmarks bar beneath the last page of the first, and you now have a single PDF that contains both PDFs.

Use SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner.

Someone else answered that.

I'm loving SEE Finance and it imported all my years of many multiple Quicken files perfectly and seems very stable and easy to use.

That sounds good. Office 2011 also works great. And it isn't that expensive, if you get it at the right place. I got my through an upgrade available from work.

Graphic Converter will do that, but Photoshop Elements is very inexpensive. I would suggest you just upgrade to the latest and pay the few dollars for it.

If you use AppleWorks, you will need replacements for the different modules. We can go into that if necessary. Do you have AppleWorks documents on the old computer?

Randy, Daly,
Thanks for letting me know of this trick. I never realized Preview
could combine documents by drag and drop. I also now realize that
Preview can annotate and you can write in notes.
It has been a while since I really looked at Preview. Did I miss
these capabilities from pre Tiger versions of the OS or has this been
a recent enhancement post Tiger?
Thanks again.

Preview got a lot of nice new features in subsequent versions of OS X
after Tiger.

If I do this in Safari, and paste into Pages, or into TextEdit, I get text and images.
Perhaps it's a fault of the office suite(s).

Hmm. It may depend upon what you're pasting the clipboard contents into. I haven't tried to determine that. I know whenever I copy and paste, I get both graphics and text.
One test might be to open the program, 'Stickies'. Copy from something with a graphic file and paste into Stickies. I know that Stickies will show both text and graphics.

Have you tried after clicking in the page doing command-a? That is Select All, then do command-c, Copy, then command-v to paste and that usually works for me.

This may be something I have added myself, but if I select text and
images in Safari then choose Safari > Services > Make New TextEdit
Window Containing Solution it creates a new TextEdit window with both
the text and any images involved.
Apologies if this Service is not on your Mac, but I'd certainly give

leaked out in various forms over the past few weeks, we now have the
whole story thanks to a trusted source. On Thursday, Apple's new retail
store app for iOS will launch, and it will bring two major features
with it. First, it will enable online ordering with retail store pick
up. This has already started happening in a few stores in California
and New York City Apple stores as well, and more stores will go live on
Thursday. Hit the jump for details on what happens when you place an
order through the app to pick up in a retail store nearby.
- If a customer orders an in-stock product, pick up will be available
approximately 12 minutes after completing the order. Why 12 minutes?
Well, the order goes through the system to the designated Apple Store
in about 3 minutes. Apple's back-of-house employees have 2 minutes to
set all of the products aside on a shelf from the minute it was
ordered. There is then a 7-minute grace period for employees to get
everything else in order. Around 12 minutes after purchasing, customers
will be able to walk into the Apple Store, skip lines, skip registers,
get their products, sign for them and leave. We're told Apple is really
excited about this, and it's something customers have been seeking for
a while.
- If a customer orders something that a retail store does not have
in-stock, like a custom-configured machine, an accessory the store does
not carry, or something like an engraved or gift-wrapped device, the
customer will be a given a pick-up date right after the purchase is
completed. Everything will have free shipping when sent to an Apple
retail store. Once the order arrives at the Apple Store and is
available for pickup, a push notification will be sent to the customer
through the Apple Store app, letting him or her know the order is
ready. We're told the same 12-minute timeframe applies here as well: 12
minutes from the time the push notification is received, the customer's
order should be waiting to be signed for.
- We have been told customers who opt to purchase online or through the
app will be given priority when they walk into the store over a
customer waiting for a retail specialist, and that Apple expects the
majority of customers over the next few years to use the in-store pick
up option as their default method of buying products. This will help
with foot traffic in retail stores while also reducing the cost of
shipping for Apple, and possibly even reducing the number of stores
Apple needs to open to accommodate sales.
- Apple will offer customers the ability to return items purchased
online to retail stores.
- Lastly, we're told that Apple will be attributing revenue from items
purchased in this manner to the retail store where the items are
delivered and retrieved. This should help create new job opportunities
since hiring at Apple Stores is based on sales. Apple is reportedly
expecting a 30% increase in sales at retail stores from this program,
and it will only be available in the U.S. for now.
The other major feature coming in Apple's new app? Customer self
check-out at retail stores. This is a huge deal and Apple is the first
to be able to put it together. Here is how this will work: after you
find the item you want to buy, like an accessory, you launch the Apple
Store app on your iOS device and there will be an option to buy a
product in the store. You scan the product with the camera on your
device in the app, click purchase, and it will charge whatever credit
card is associated to your Apple ID. You then just walk out of the
store. Yes, we have been told that Apple will not be checking purchases
which seems hard to believe, but this self check-out option will launch
Thursday worldwide at all Apple retail stores.

Lion is "download only".
It does not make sense to double the download size necessary, from 3.5 GB to 7 GB, in order to include XCode for EVERYone who upgrades to Lion, particularly when only about 1-5% of them will every do anything with it.

Re: Business Card app for iphone?

I've used Presto Biz card which was bundled with one of the all-in-
one's I've purchased over the years. The version I've used is from
2005 and it did an adequate job of recognizing and populating the
business card fields. Still required a lot of work to correct since
so many cards come with fancy graphics and weird placements so it was
hard for the reader to pick up what everything was.
It was adequate given that it was free.
I'm sure there are a lot better things now 6 years later.

Duplicate Entries
Posted by: "Harry Flaxman" harry.flaxman@comcast.net hflaxman001

Since implementing iCloud on my iMac, my wife's Win pc, and my iPod Touch, I have been getting duplicate address book entries, duplicate calendar entries as well.
I have no idea how this is happening. I've gone over the settings and all looks OK. When I installed iCloud, I turned off CalDEV for Google and Yahoo. Should they have been left on, to sync, I can understand the dupesbut that's not the case.
Anyone have any suggestions as to how to remedy this? If I get rid of the dupe entry, it shows up again!
TIA
Harry

Re: rounded corners

I've had a copy of the biography of Steve Jobs since it went on sale last Monday (the 24th) and I'm not even (page 272) halfway-through.
Early in the book, possibly when it was referencing the Apple II, it was mentioned that Jobs had a thing for rounded corners on windows (and on hardware).
Running 10.6.8, I noticed that Finder windows have all four corners rounded, yet other windows (eg: Mail emails, Safari, etc) have only the upper-2 corners rounded.
Any ideas about that? Not a biggie importancewise, just a digression.
BTW, the About This Mac window has all four corners square.

POSTSCRIPT: a sneaky (and now-offtopic) aside. The NYT opinion piece (which was picked up Saturday by my local rag) by Maureen Dowd was, notwithstanding the hagiographic impulses of most of the 'Screed' posters, spot-on. Dowd was focused, she had a point to make, she didn't wander all over the place. Steve Jobs, above all, would have understood and (probably grudgingly) would have agreed with her. ON

Acrobat and IE
Posted by: "kathialexis" kathialexis@cox.net kathialexis
Tue Nov 1, 2011 9:46 pm (PDT)
Suddenly, my pdfs are have turned into IE 8docs. I cannot open them in anything but my browser. I have none of the controls I had in Acrobat.
When I uncheck the box in Acrobat that says display in browser, I cannot open the pdfs at all. Adobe customer service is pretty useless when it comes to technical stuff. All they want to do is sell me more software. When I goggle it, all anyone wants to tell me is how to view pdfs in my browser. I want just the opposite. Why in the world would I spend hundreds of dollars on Acrobat software and then only be able to view them in IE?
I just installed a brand new Acrobat X. I am using Windows 7 with the lastest service packs. But I also had the same problem with Acrobat 7.
I depend on pdfs to post a lot of stuff on our website. I haven't checked it yet, but I am not sure these IE/pdfs are going to cut in in Safari on my Mac with Dreamweaver. Besides, I like opening pdfs in Acrobat. For instance, how am I going to combine different pdfs into one when all I have are IE controls?
Can someone please help.
Thanks,
Kathi
