Well, it's not pretty, but you could start the name with "zz."

I've never liked "~" because this is a character used by the OS's themselves for various temp, hidden, and system files, and thus confusing.

Can't answer your question directly without trial and error, but...

My long practice has been to use "!" to sort to the top and "z" to sort to the bottom. Multiples, as in "!!" or "zz" to sort higher or lower. Has worked for many, many years with every OS and network protocol that I've encountered. It also has an understandable logic to someone who might otherwise wonder why I've used odd characters in my filenames.

Whatever you do, don't use a leading space to force a top sort. Have fought this one for years. Common in my business but can cause serious issues on servers.

Cheers,

Or you can simply use underscores to bring things to the top.

For me...I'm always a little hesitant to click on a tiny URL because I can't see where it's going to take me.

Placing a < at the beginning, and a > at the end (with no space) will usually keep a long URL from breaking.

That's a good question, Tod. Who knows. Is clicking on a URL to see
where it leads actually downloading something? I suppose so.

Does Randy's use of the word "torrents" without a capital refer to
Torrenz or the search engine so called?
I've never used it, so I had to Google it.

Torrents is a peer-to-peer sharing platform that people can use to seed and download data. This can be both legitimate, illegal or free software. Though, I do not vouch for the uses people put the technology to, I think torrents are a brilliant way of sharing data online.

As a technology, it is unprecedented, because the uniqueness behind use of torrents to download/upload information is that it beats conventional client-server architecture any day. Because as the number of users to a torrent file increase, the speed at which it downloads increases as well. And this is perfect in an age when we are looking for technologies that help reduce energy requirements, infrastructure setup and maintenance costs and IT bandwidth (although I am not sure if bandwidth is optimised with torrents)

But is there any one who wants to look at torrents from the technology angle, and not from the part that they have been extensively used for the reasons why everyone is shunning away beautiful technology?

I certainly agree with you re the technology, Arjun. I use torrent
transfer for large Linux distributions, among other legitimate things.
It is a great way of moving large quantities of data and many files in
one lump package.

Apple Customer Relations - Never Ending Loop

Posted by: "Arjun Singhal" arjunsinghal@yahoo.com   arjunsinghal

Thu Dec 1, 2011 7:30 am (PST)

Hi All

I am writing in context to my post on the Macbook Pro screen flicker. I just heard from the Authorised Service Center that they have been able to see the flicker properly and their engineers are seeing the symptom (its obvious no one was attentively watching the screen till now) and have communicated with the Apple Engineers that work with Customer Relations. They say that the engineers are again hinting a change of parts, although nothing is certain yet, and the repairs could take another week. They also mentioned that the hardware test is clear and that its a question about trying out the permutations.

The Customer Relations Manager said she is not a technical person to advise on the case, but she will talk with the engineers. Now these engineers are sitting in Singapore, and Customer Relations is sitting in Singapore and the Authorised Service Engineers here in India are reporting one thing, and the entire communications loop is never closing just because Customer Relations is telling me that Apple has a policy against providing replacements on site or in India, and that I must ship the notebook to them in Singapore at my own cost and risk.

Months have passed since I am going in circles, and I we're nearing end of the warranty period on the Apple Care Protection Pack. My first request for a replacement after multiple unsuccessful attempts of repair was made on Nov 17th and Apple seems to be having a new policy effective Nov 21st onwards. The world says good things about Apple service, and out here I am feeling completely lost after having invested in expensive equipment, run back and forth from service centers without proper resolution and I end up having a piece of expensively machined aluminum that has been put together from salvaged parts made somewhere in a repair center.

Seriously don't know when the ordeal will end, but really not happy with the way things are going. They are expecting me to do so much to obtain service which should've just been part of reasonable customer experience. It's really being a test of wits, as though they want the customer to get tired and stop showing up only.

Regards,
Arjun

Thanks Arjun for the rundown of your problems with Apple customer care.

It is interesting for others to learn how the AppleCare package can vary from country to country or region to region, though I believe it costs about the same (or is more expensive outside of North America).

When I started buying Apple products in Greece some years ago AppleCare wasn't even an option. Finally within the last two years AppleCare is available but it is paltry compared to the North American coverage. It seems that where you are coverage is not very good either.

Good Luck and thanks for filling us in.

Problem with keywords in iPhoto 11

I just upgraded to iphoto 11. I used to be able to see my keywords under the photo and add keywords under the photo. I also would be able to type in the shortcut for a keyword and it would fill it in automatically. Now, I am unable to type anything under the photos and adding keywords can only be done in the info bar. Is that new on iPhoto 11?

I have eculiar question. I recently bought a 27 inch iMac with updated Lion. I had a MacMini mid 2009(intel core duo) hich I upgraded to 2 GB ram and installed Lion on it. Now I want to connect my MacMini to my new iMac to use the iMac screen to use some of the previous stuff on MacMini. The macMini has mini display port and iMac has thunderbolt port. What connecting cable I should use. The kid at Apple store thought I can use a thunderboltt extension to con net mini display port in mac mIni to connect to thunderbolt in iMac, although the machine(MacMini) is not thunderbolt capable.br>
Anybody has any answer or suggestion. Is it possible to connect these machines using thunderbolt cable I do not want to buy the thunderbolt cable unnecessarily

The 2009 mini doesn't have Thunderbolt - and I don't think the 2011 iMac
will work as a display (that was only the 2010 model, right?). If it does
work as a display you need a Mini Display cable if you just want to connect
them they can access each other via WiFi either on a network or via AdHoc -
connecting to each other. If you want faster transfer, a simple Ethernet
cable between the two will give you gigabit speed transfers.

AFAIK, the Thunderbolt port is a 2-way port capable of graphic display
in both directions, so the machine should be able to accept input and
display it. I thought I had seen this explained somewhere, but I'll be
darned if I can find it now. When I do, I will post the URL.

Questions on iCloud and Photostream

Posted by: "Jay Abraham" jaygroups@abrahamgroup.net   kerala01212001

Thu Dec 1, 2011 12:46 pm (PST)

Hi all,

Is there a way to add photo's to Photostream using the website rather than putting it in iTunes or an iOS device?

My parents and in-laws both have iPads and I'm trying to see if there is a way for me to add pictures on the iCloud website so they can get recent updates of their grand-kids. I used to put on MobileMe and then send them a link but with MobileMe going away by June, I wanted to explore the options.

I see there is a way to subscribe to a photo feed from iPhoto 11 on Lion. Is there a similar way to do so directly from iPhoto on the iPad. Both sets of grandparents are using PCs so they don't have a desktop based Mac to subscribe to a feed from.

Thanks for any suggestions.

There is an iCloud Control Panel item for Windows - you install that and
just turn on Photo Stream and it lets you select directories for the
automatic download of all new photos and a different directory if you want
to insert photos into the PhotoStream. It is supposedly only for Windows
Vista or Windows 7 but there is a work around for the .exe to run on
Windows XP. I have it installed on an XP and a Win7 machine to receive
PhotoStreams...

In Pages, when you get "save a version" (Instead of the perfectly understandable "save new version" in the old Pages), they don't let you change the name of the file. This is bad, because I want to go in there and rename the file that I started on and I can't figure out how to do that without going into Finder and going through all that trouble.
It used to be so easy.

The list answer yesterday said you click on the side and there are various extras to "save a version" but I can't find what to click on . Can you go through this again for me?

I don't know why they had to make Pages harder, but they did.

Lion's desktop on top of desktop

I'm new this week to Lion. I used to use Expose to flip back to my desktop. All the open windows would conveniently slide off the screen so I could access my Hard Drive, and my photo folders which live on the desktop. Now when I use Expose to slide the open windows off, they don't slide off, but I get all the open windows, plus the old desktop still on the screen, but over a brand new, gray canvas-like desktop, and I can't even see my Hard Drive or the folders that used to be on the old desktop. I assume this is normal for Lion.
I looked at Apple tutorials, but haven't found one yet that explains what's going on or how to "fix" it.
A link or an explanation will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Ken Silva

Lynn,
The old "Save as" command created a duplicate of your file and saved that through a standard "Save" dialog. Now you have do both separately. First "Duplicate", which opens a new window with your document, and then "Save", which opens the standard "Save" dialog. You may edit the copy before saving it and both files stay open until you close them.
