Getting rid of  a menu app.

I have an app - Weather Vane - that appears up in the Menu bar that apparently fizzled when Lion came along. It's still up there scrolling away "Weather Vane Fetching forecast" incessantly. I've tried to trash the app but because it's still open, it won't trash. How can I uninstall it? The scrolling message is driving me bananas! Tried e-mailing them but no reply.

First thing to try is to hold the command key down, select the menubar icon or display, and drag it off of the menubar. You should then be able to trash the original.

If you have it in 'System Preferences->Accounts->Login Items', delete it from there, then log out and log back in again. With luck that should quit 'Weather V ane' so that it can be deleted in the usual way.

The issue may or may not be Lion.

A look at the website: http://www.spikesoft.net/downloads.php#wv

Gives the following rather rude explanation:

"My apologies. I guess success isnt always a good thing. Accuweather says that Weather Vane is hitting their server too often. They receive over 100,000 hits a day for all of the users out there. [***]holes! I'll find a new feed and release a new version this weekend. Sorry for the inconvenience."

I tried the app, and except for the behavior you noted (which I reproduced), it appears to be working OK.

print preview

I noticed that since I installed lion, I no longer have the print preview
option while printing something on line. I am using Firefox. Hubie said to
try safari. When I did , I still had the print preview feature. I am using
a HP laser jet P1606dn.

has anyone else had this problem. I have used Firefox for years, and love
it, and don't want to use safari.

Thanks,
Jeannie

That sounds as if your problem is with Firefox's programmers, not with Lion's programmers.

If you select Print, do you *then* get a preview option?

No I don't. I really miss that feature, as I am always printing out
receipts and other things.I guess it is some problem between Lion and
Firefox. I had the print preview with Snow Leopard and Firefox.

Howdy.

I can't say what happend to the Print Preview feature in Lion /
Firefox.

I'd be sure to upgrade to the most recent Firefox version.

There are a number of other Lion / Firefox users with the same
complaint.

One wrote a note that he/she was able to customize the Firefox Toolbar
and add a Print command which had the preview command. I don't have
Firefox installed at this time so can't test this. Try it. Might
work.

Entourage to Mail/iCal, POP to IMAP, still a few loose ends

Posted by: "James Robertson" jamesrob@sonic.net   jamesrob328i

Sat Dec 10, 2011 10:49 am (PST)

Still struggling to get all this right. I've moved from Snow Leopard to Lion just before doing what's in the subject, but now there are a few remaining oddities. For example, when I get an email with an invitation in it (good example would be the Genius Bar appointment I have at 9 am tomorrow if I don't figure this out myself first), if I click the "add to calendar" link with iCal running, what happens is that Entourage 2008 launches and puts the appointment into my calendar there. I want it to go to my default iCal calendar. In iCal, I have my "home:On My Mac" calendar listed as the default in iCal preferences, and I cannot find anything in Entourage 2008 EWS preferences that should be capable of superseding that.

I don't see why this would be the case, but I'm wondering if my entries in System Preferences: Mail, Contacts and Calendars could be the culprit. My default IMAP mail account with my ISP isn't even LISTED there, but the POP mail account with my ISP still is (the account is offline, but the same email address and PW are now being used by my IMAP account.

I don't know how accounts actually get into this prefs pane. I've never set up accounts there (at least I don't remember doing so). I've used Migration Assistant to get stuff from old computers and old operating systems into this computer. Moreover, even though the IMAP email account at my ISP doesn't show up in System Prefs, the notifications from Apple com to my mobileme address (actually a <xxx@mac.com> address, and that IS listed in the System Prefs "Mail, Contacts, and Calendars" pane.

Once I sort that out (anyone have any ideas?) I'll consider turning on iCloud, but before I do THAT, I'm hoping to get some up or down recommendations on doing so from people here. Also, several of the calendars I look at in iCal are actually Google Calendars that are shared to iCal. My guess is that I won't share THOSE with iCloud, just the "on my Mac" calendars. Is that true?

Thanks so much,
Jim Robertson

Synchronization Failure with Lion/iPhone

Posted by: "redpup99" billmorton999@gmail.com   redpup99

Sat Dec 10, 2011 12:15 pm (PST)

I have an Iphone running 4.2.1 software, and a relatively new (2 months) MacBook
Pro running Lion 10.7.2

I am replacing my older G5 Mac Pro which has been updated as far as possible
with OSX 10.5.?

I had been using the iPhone and the G5 together. When I got the new Macbook
synched the iPhone with the G5, and then synched it with the new Macbook, and
I THINK at that time it appeared I had a complete synchronized system, particularly
with regard to CONTACTS, which is the only thing I really care about.

Last week I discovered that a large number (20% or so?) of the 500 or so
CONTACTS on the iPhone had vanished. I checked the Macbook and they appeared to be there ok.

So I synched again with the MacBook and selected the option that supposedly
forces the phone's content to be replaced with the computer's database contents.

This did a synchronization (according to the screen on the Macbook), but when
I examined the iPhone's data afterwards, it was clear that none of the missing
data had been placed on the phone.

Has anyone here had problems with synchronization with LION? Is there any
solution short of manually re-entering (on the phone) all of the missing
entries?

Or is it time to call in Apple "Genius" folks? Thanks in advance for
any comments.

Aperture question

Sat Dec 10, 2011 12:20 pm (PST)

Hello there.

I'm trying to transfer photos from my SD card to my iMac via Aperture. Normally, when I insert the card, Aperture opens and I get a window with all of the image files and the option to Check All or Uncheck All. Today, I get the option, but I don't see the photos. The photos are definitely on the card, though, because I can view them with Preview.

Have I accidentally changed a setting?

Thanks for any insight you can provide,
Barb

Aperture/iPhoto Print Issue

Posted by: "Harry Flaxman" harry.flaxman@comcast.net   hflaxman001

Sat Dec 10, 2011 12:30 pm (PST)

I bought some 3rd party ink using eBay and am having an issue when using Aperture or iPhoto to print. The printer is a HP Photosmart Premium C310a printer. The issue is that from a Win 7 pc, the photos come out fine. I had at first assumed it was the 3rd party ink until I let all prints dry and 'set' from both systems. Both sets of prints done on the Mac had distorted colors, while all of the prints done under Win 7 were fine.

I tried changing color profiles within Aperture, but no dice.

Has anyone ever used such 3rd party ink and had success? Why should the 2 systems be so radically different. I was using the same paper both times, 4x6 tabbed HP Premium Pro photo paper.

And here's another possibility:

Pelican probably isn't the only brand of such cases, but I thought of
them because I have one of their cases, not originally bought with a
hard drive in mind. I got mine at Recreational Equipment Inc. in
Seattle, so I imagine most stores catering to hikers would carry them.

There's a difference between formating a card for its first use and constantly reformating a card after having used Disk Utility to erase the card. The latter is unnecessary.

DU, after camera-card erasure, remounts the camera card, which (to me) formats that card. I have never, to my knowledge, had a formating issue after having used Disk Utility.

I can only recall one instance where I had to reformat my card. I can't recall the cause.

I use Apple Mail (version 4.5) and it̢۪s been quite wonky for a while. Not sure how it got that way. For instance, I sometimes have a problem moving items. The to-be-moved text jumps to the left side and stays on that side. It never stays where I want it to remain.

Lots of other Mail issues. I'm running 10.6.8. I presume that an upgrade to Lion will solve my Mail problems. Not sure what you mean by "very weird about the quoting", Dane.

Your followup email (quoting me) had some weird symbols in it. I associate those symbols with a certain Microsoft email app --can̢۪t think of its name offhand-- that never seemed to react well with my Apple Mail, or so it seemed.

The symbol is a 45-degree-rotated box that contains a question mark. It shows up where apostrophes were used in the original text.

[from Dane̢۪s email quoting me]
There is no need to reformat my Sonys card, guys, the ability to erase is built-in. The reason that I use Disk Utility to erase my Sony is because Im always importing, resizing and storing (in an alternate-to-iPhoto folder (in addition to iPhoto)) my pix, so its just more convenient using DU for the process.

Oneal,

Basically, when you quote someone, it doesn't look like a quote. This makes
reading your messages hard work. All email clients do the "quote" thing by
default so I have no idea what you are doing.

If you can wait, I'll take you through the PhotoRec process tomorrow.

WeatherDock no longer works because the Weather Channel no longer allows WeatherDock free access. A visit to the author's web site explains in more detail.
