AirPlay Mirroring, iMessage reportedly headed to OS X [video]

Sent to you by Bill Boulware via Google Reader: AirPlay Mirroring,
iMessage reportedly headed to OS X [video] via BGR: The Three Biggest
Letters In Tech by Zach Epstein on 10/31/11

The eventual arrival of iMessage on OS X, in some form, is almost a
foregone conclusion at this point, but a new report claims to confirm
that Apple is indeed working on bringing it to the Mac platform
alongside AirPlay Mirroring. Citing multiple anonymous sources, 9to5
Mac says Apple is already hard at work bringing the services to OS X,
though it is apparently unclear whether or not the efforts will bear
fruit. AirPlay Mirroring will theoretically allow OS X users to mirror
their Mac display wirelessly to an Apple TV while iMessage will let
users carry on conversations from Mac computers just as they can now
with the iPhone, iPod touch or iPad. The report says Apple is also
currently debating whether or not iMessage should be integrated into
Apple's iChat app or introduced as a standalone app, and a concept
video of how the latter scenario might work follows below.

Absolutely. I just upgraded to an iPhone 4 with iOS5, and am loving it. I had a BlackBerry between my 4 and my 3G. I love my iPhones!!
I keep reading and learning about iOS5, and a few things pop up that aren't even in any books!

GM, I have an iPhone as well as my daughter and we have never had a problem with the speaker. It sounds like something maybe wrong with that phone. Unless that hasn't happened to me yet....good luck😁😁

I need to organize my photos into folders, move additional photos to existing folders, and back them up on my PC. I cannot see a way to organize them in iTunes. If this is possible in iTunes, might someone direct me to instructions on this. If there is software that supports this, or an app for the phone, I would like to know about it too.
Thank you.

I hope someone can help me. I just installed Lion OSX on my iMac and MacBook Pro and now my iPhone 4 is dead. I cannot turn it on and when I connect it to my iMac, iPhoto recognizes the phone pictures but iTunes can't find my phone in order to restore or sync it. All softwares are up to date, iPhone and Lion so I don't know why my iPhone won't turn on. Any suggestions? Please advise. Thank you in advance

Do you have the iPhone charger that plugs into the wall that you can plug in the iPhone cord? If so, plug your iPhone into that to charge it. Leave it charging for a couple of hours and then try and turn it on. If it won't turn on, my next suggestion is get an appointment at the Genius Bar..

Library WMA Audiobooks- Lost

Don't use the Overdrive App on our iDevices. Use Overdrive on the PC
to download audiobooks and then transfer to various devices. Don't
have a problem putting WMA on the Zune, just drag and drop. Same with
putting the mp3 into iTunes for later transfer.

The problem happens when I use Overdrive on the PC to Transfer WMA
files to any of my iDevices, -iPod, Phone. It looks like iTunes is
converting, but I can't seem to find the files on the iDevice or in
iTunes.

I don't really expect to see it in iTunes as think it's only used to
convert, but where are the files to play on the iDevice? Are they in a
different place on the iPod and the iPhone?

Thanks

They aren't apps.
iMessage is the Messages app.
Notifications is now pull down like in Android.
Twitter integration means you can tweet your photos and stuff right from the file itself.

For those of you who have never had a warranty issue at an Apple Store, I
thought I would share my experience. I have been to this particular Mall
based Apple store several times, I waited in line and bought my first
iPhone there, I bought a Mac Mini Server there, and I have returned an item
there. Today was the first time I have ever made a "Genius" bar
appointment. My iPad 2 (pre-ordered and delivered at launch), had a 1/4"
white spot (burnt pixels) and rapid battery drain (two separate issues). I
finally had a chance to set an appointment, drove to the mall, parked as
close as I could (very busy mall). I arrived at the Apple Store about 5
minutes after my appointment and there were at least 100 people over 12yo
and 25 under 12yo, crowded around every displayed device, by the time I
made it around the people to the "Greeter" I was 10 minutes past my
appointment and told that after 7 minutes they normally cancel them, but
they were running behind so they would fit me in. I waited at least 15
minutes, having to move back and forth because the only place to stand was
near the "Genius Bar" entrance. A "Genius" finally came over to me
(another called my name a few minutes later, not sure if they didn't mark
me off or what) and asked what the issue(s) were. I showed him and he
explained that he would have to swap out the iPad and that he would do so
as long as it was under warranty (it is) and there was no liquid damage
(there wasn't) - he used a keychain light to check the liquid sensors and
entered my Serial # into his iPhone/iPod Touch (not sure which it was since
it was in the checkout/card scanner case).

This is where it is interesting, the replacement items are not from retail
packaging, they are from unmarked brown boxes (I'm sure there is a bar code
or label that identifies the size and model). The replacement still had
iOS 4 and was not activated, he did take it out and activate it and let me
verify that it was 32GB and AT&T. I signed the "warranty replacement"
ticket on his checkout device and went to my old iPad and went to the
Settings and tapped Erase Settings & Content, entered my password and let
it erase before I left. As I was walking out, my iPhone buzzed with my
"Receipt", which is the interesting part - as a warranty replacement, a
32GB 3G iPad is worth $369.

All in all, it was a decent experience but they were busy.

When Apple deems it necessary to replace an iDevice or computer, my understanding is hat the replacement is a refurb. That's not a bad thing. In fact, I consider it a very good thing. Apple checks every component of their iDevices and computers replacing components as needed before they are called refurb. If that were true of the plants that produce Apples new products, it would take 3-4 times as long to get the new products to market. So, for as many (for instance) iPhone's that get made, my guess is that 1 in a thousand get tested. I don't know how many refurb plants Apple has but one of them is in Elk Grove, northern CA about 30 min from me.

Some upset as iCloud wipes out docs from iWork apps

Posted by: "Bill Boulware" bill.boulware@gmail.com   boulware0224

Mon Oct 31, 2011 10:32 pm (PDT)

http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/9To5Mac-MacAllDay/~3/RIgTPwMVrH0/

Sent to you by Bill Boulware via Google Reader: Some upset as iCloud
wipes out docs from iWork apps via 9to5Mac by Christian Zibreg on
10/20/11

We're receiving numerous reports from disgruntled users claiming iCloud
deleted their documents from iWork apps on their iPhones, iPod touches
and iPads after restarting devices. Worse, documents from the Pages,
Numbers and Keynote iOS apps are also wiped out from the iCloud servers
and cannot be found using the web interface. Sure enough, a bunch of
threads on Apple's Support Communities site (here and here) highlight
the issue which affects an unknown portion of users.

A forum user NickFro describes the catastrophic bug:

I can reliably reproduce the error as follows. Create a document in
Numbers on an iOS device, or upload to iCloud.com manually. Wait for
sync. Restart iOS device. Launch Numbers. The document will be deleted.
If you have iCloud.com open, the file will still appear but clicking on
it generates a "File not present on server" error. Pretty serious bug,
but I can't tell if it's in iCloud or the iWork apps. Or both.

He also offers this remedy:

Delete the iCloud account at both the main level of Settings (i.e., by
selecting iCloud) AND by deleting the account in the Mail, Calenders,
and Contacts section of Settings. Have it remove everything from your
device. Once it's done. Go to the main level, select iCloud, and
re-enable your account there and set all settings there for sync. Let
the sync happen.

If that didn't help, try the solutions described here and here.

If you backup your iOS devices with iTunes instead with iCloud, you're
in luck: Just restore to a device backup containing your files and
launch Pages, Keynote or Numbers on your device – but don't enable
iCloud in any of those apps. As you know, iTunes creates a device
backup at each sync (unless iCloud backup is enabled in iTunes or
Settings on your device). This lets you use Time Machine to go back in
time and retrieve a specific backup file containing your device's
settings, app data, documents and more. The affected users who enabled
iCloud Backup on their device (Settings > iCloud > Storage and Backup)
are in a much worse situation as any document created on their device
and synced with iCloud gets deleted from both places without a warning,
as shown in the below clip.

For some, the problem stems from migrating MobileMe accounts to the
iCloud ones so deactivating the "old" MobileMe account on every iOS
device, Mac or PC should help.

According to a forum user Felix Leiter:

As long as there is still one machine with a functioning "MobileMe" in
the System Preferences, this will erase all files on startup. I found
it out when I turned on my wife's machine, having forgotten that I had
created a temporary user account there to store some of my MobileMe
information. As soon as I switched to that user account, zap!, all
iWork files disappear. Now that all former MobileMe panels have been
deactivated, the remote reset is no longer occurring. or at least so it
seems.

For others, iWork documents are disappearing upon syncing with a
computer, too. This happens after a document has been created on an iOS
device or uploaded from the computer. Here's one possible remedy…

If you uploaded documents to iCloud using the web interface or iWork
apps on your Mac, use the Finder's Go To Folder option in the Go menu
and type in /users/USER/Library/Mobile Documents/ (replace USER with
your user name in Mac OS X). You should see com~apple~appname folders,
each containing documents from iWork apps on the Mac that have been
shared with iWork.com and accessible via the iCloud web interface. Note
the iWork suite on the Mac has not been updated with iCloud integration
for seamless syncing between mobile and desktop. If it's any help, make
sure that the latest iOS 5 version is installed on all your mobile
devices, that you run iTunes 10.5 or higher and have updated iWork apps
on your Mac and iOS devices via Mac App Store and App Store/iTunes.

Another handy tip:

Whatever you do, don't edit iWork documents simultaneously and always
close the document on one device (and let the app sync it with iCloud)
before picking it up on the other. We've seen incidents like this
happen to other online services. Each time, we're reminded that one
should never trust the cloud exclusively for one's daily productivity.
A prudent backup strategy should always involve a clever combination of
cloud syncing and backing up your devices locally, through iTunes. This
allows you to use Time Machine (you're using Time Machine, right?) to
browse a timeline of device backups should you ever need to roll back
to an earlier state.

WiFi Ghost

Wifi sync can be a bit weird if you're not expecting it.

I am reading Steve Jobs biography on my iPad 2 in iBook. I also have it on my iPhone 4. Today I read chapter 24 on my iPhone. Just a few minutes ago I opened the book on my iPad, glanced up to see the bookmark at the beginning of chapter 24 and what looked like a bunch of pages flipped over to the beginning of chapter 25. Made my heart skip a beat since I hadn't thought of the wifi sync at the moment it happened LOL

Are you able to go than Apple store and talk to a genius? There's wifi at all Apple stores, so the genius can check connectivity.

So I purchased the cheapest data plan they had. Its 14.99 for 30 days. Do they have the iPad 2 set this way, where you won't get wifi in other places and you have to purchase the data plan. And can I go into settings and turn it off? That way I won't have to use it while I'm at home.
