Thanks, Bill.
I've checked the "Prevent iPods..." in Preferences > Devices. That
doesn't do it.
I'm not using the 3GS as a phone yet (waiting for jailbreak software
for iOS 5 to mature so as to use it on a network that is NOT att) and
when I plug the phone into the Mac I iTunes opens and complains about
the alien SIM card (from a non-ATT carrier). Nothing other than this
message is on the screen when the iPhone is plugged in, so the option
of disabling "Open iTunes when this phone ... is connected" is not
available to me.
Guess I'll just have to suffer until jailbreak time...
Thanks again,
Dave

I believe the relevant location would be iTunes > Preferences > Devices. Check the box to "Prevent iPods, iPhones and iPads from syncing automatically".

OH MY GOSH!! I sent this request for help back on October 21!!! I use Yahoo mail, and know it's famous for delayed emailings.
I kind of wondered why it never showed up, but dropped any more pursuing of the issue since I managed to get things "fixed" by doing a repair permissions maneuver again, and it seems to have worked.
The laptop is working okay right now, and is actually in Las Vegas with my hubby!
Thanks for the reply, though. If this happens again, I look into the clean install.

Siri was previously a stand-alone app that has since been removed from the
app store. It worked on 3G and above. The app has also stopped working now.

Years ago, I bought a PowerMac G5. I think it was back around the Jaguar time. I could not go backward as far as the OS goes.
I have a phone appt. with Apple tonight. I'm going to try to get an answer to this one. It appears you are right, although I haven't been able to do it on all the machines I've had.

Re: A question about copying and pasting

Howdy.
Mac OS X 10.7 Lion made changes and added to the abilities of
"Services."
In previous versions of Mac OS X, Snow Leopard, Leopard, Tiger, you
could use Automator to make several things to automate things. One was
called a Finder Plug In. So in Snow Leopard, if you make your own
Automator workflow and save it as a Finder plug in, you access that
Finder Plug in by clicking an icon and using the Contextual menu to
pick the plug in.
Lion sort of wrapped the idea of the Finder Plug into a "Service."
In a number of ways, the Service is more convenient.
Unfortunately for folks who have tried to learn and use Automator it
has changed with every major version of Mac OS X introduced since
Tiger.

Lion update for iWork?
Posted by: "DaveC" davec2468@yahoo.com davec2468
Thu Nov 3, 2011 8:35 pm (PDT)
Since updating to Lion, iWork '09 doesn't... well, work. ;-)
The versions on my Lion mac are:
- Numbers: 2.1
- Keynote: 5.1
- Pages: 4.1
They are all copyright up to and including 2011, so I'm sure Software
Update updated them recently when running under Snow Leopard.
My question is: are these versions not upgradeable under Lion? In
other words, are there newer releases that the iWork update 6 (via
Software Update) will recognize and update with Lion compatibility?
What's the minimum (oldest) version of the iWork '09 apps that is
required for upgrading to Lion-compatible?
Thanks,
Dave

I know it's not much help, but all of the programs in iWork '09 work here.
Did you do the update for iWork that came out for Lion? If not, that's more than likely the culprit, the lack of the updates that is.

I am writing a book with endnotes. I have word 2011 and the numbering

appear as standard i.e. 1,2 3. I have worked through all the menus
