Once iDefrag finished moving fragments around on my partition, the Finder was able to copy the file from my old Mac to my new one. I don't have another explanation other than that there wasn't enough contiguous free space before defragmentation, but there was afterwards.

Activity Monitor?

For the last week or so, my iMac (circa 2007), running OS 10.6.8, has been been running excruciatingly slow when using Firefox 7.0.1. It's also slow in Safari 5.1.1. But it also just runs slowly, even when I'm not in a browser window.
I have lots of HD space and memory. I've done all the usual maintenance things, but I'm stumped.
Clicking on links results in having to wait and wait while the colored beach ball spins incessantly. Opening web pages takes 10 times longer than it should.
Even typing messages results in many many hesitations as I have to wait to move forward.
I also can often hear what I always call "grinding and churning" inside my computer - what it sounds like when something is "working."
Am running Carbonite in the background, but have very often had NO hesitation or slowness issues while it's running. I have put it on pause several times to see if that makes any difference with the slowness, and it doesn't.
I've checked my Activity Monitor, but have no idea how to "read" it. Is there some way to find out what's churning/working and thus what might be causing the slowness?
Also, are there other things that would make my usually fast computer get so bogged down that it impacts my productivity? I've checked for viruses, repaired permissions, cleared the caches, restarted, etc.

Sometimes running an outdated version of a stay-resident program will
slow things to a crawl and cause rotating beachballs. The most
common culprits are Adobe utilities.
Try this:
Uninstall the copy of Flash that you have installed with this
uninstaller:
<http://fpdownload.macromedia. com/get/flashpla yer/current/
uninstall_flash_player_osx. dmg>
or
http://is.gd/lrnKUG
Then download the latest version of Flash directly from Adobe, and
install it:
http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
If you currently have them installed, download and install the latest
versions of the following:
Adobe Air
http://get.adobe.com/air/? PID=3146232
Flip4Mac
http://dynamic.telestream. net/downloads/ download- flip4macwmv. asp
Please let us know if that helps. If it doesn't, I can tell you how
to track down the problem.

Sync the book from your iPad to you iMac with iTunes. If the book is in PDF format, then you can read it in Preview.
Other formats you will need another app to read it.
What format and where did you buy the book?

If the books are Kindle format you can download the Kindle for Mac app free from the Amazon website.
