I am not sure what OS you have but if Windows, I use a program
called Bigasoft DVD to iPhone converter. It's not free but has a
nice simple GUI and is super easy to use.

I'm not sure if it was in this group or not but someone said they rip dvd's
with handbrake, while I rip with ripit and then put it into handbrake to
encode. What I'd like to know is, all the files on a dvd are individual
.vob files. How do you get a whole disc ripped using handbrake?

The way I do to see movies on iphone is to use the App CineXplayer. It plays several formats of video without conversion...

On the DVD side, I use Fairuse to make a DivX out of it and then use CineXplayer to watch on iphone...works perfectly. It evens plays subtitles.

The good thing is that the DivX use the AVI format and is fully playable on a PC without loss, this way the same file you made out of the DVD
you can watch it on the iphone, PC and on the TV too.

If you need more help let me know

There are a lot of DVD-ripper-converter programs out there. Even the ones
that aren't free may have a trial of some sort, or you can keep an eye out
for giveawayoftheday offerings for them. I've used Cucusoft (paid s/w) and
found it easy & it does a good job.

I looked back in the message files and see that it was Roger (I think) that said he uses Handbrake to rip and encode dvds. Since dvds have all kinds of .vob files on the disc that are pieces and parts of the movie, how do I know which ones to convert and how do I get those vob's put together into one file? I normally use RipIt on my iMac but if there's a way to do it in Handbrake, eliminating the RipIt step, I might save time in the long run.

Yea it's me. But I dont understand the question. Handbrake makes a playable DVD on your Mac, iPhone or iPod Touch. It is simple and just works.

So you don't rip dvd's using Handbrake? You make dvd's using handbrake? I rip dvd's using RipIt and encode the dvdmedia file in Handbrake for my iTunes. I go on vacation and am able to add movies to my iPad so I can watch them on the plane.

Ok, so since there are many .vobs on a DVD, how do you know which ones are the right ones for the movie and how do you tell handbrake to put those specific .vobs together to make the movie? Also, does Handbrake do the rip and encoding all at once or does it rip and then you have to tell it to encode?

With RipIt, I open the app, pop in the disc, RipIt sees and mounts the disc in it's program and I click rip. When it's done, it spits out a dvdmedia file that I drag into Handbrake, click start and that's that. In the end I get a m4v ready for iTunes.

With handbrake you stick in your DVD in your drive, select the movie and it rips. I don't worry about vobs

I've never had that happen. My handbrake (right from install) always wants a source. I didn't know that there was an auto part of Handbrake.

Yes open the DVD as the source and let it rip.

Apple releases Apple Store v2.0 app featuring EasyPay and Personal P

Sent to you by Bill Boulware via Google Reader: Apple releases Apple
Store v2.0 app featuring EasyPay and Personal Pickup via 9to5Mac by
Jake Smith on 11/8/11

Apple has updated their Apple Store app to version 2.0 featuring
EasyPay and Personal Pickup. As we've already outlined, EasyPay allows
customers to purchase cheaper accessories in the Apple Store through
the app, rather than having to deal with an Apple sales rep. Store
workers we've contacted have called this "EasyTheft" because of the
perceived ease in which someone could walk out of a store with an item
without paying.

Personal Pickup allows you to request an item to be purchased at a
Retail Store through the app, and it will be ready within 12 minutes.
This will be amazing for commuter stores like the new Grand Central
location.

Finally, Track your Stuff does what you think it does from the 'more'
tab'.

On Apple Store shelves, you'll see signs like this one spotted last
week:

Another screenshot after the break:

No, they must have the #CC used online and cc's will be scanned and so on at pick up. No one can just 'walk out' with items. We require a Government issue ID and that card usually.

I haven't had a chance to use this at work, but it is handy for those who want to utilize it.

I am NOT a fan of ANY self-pay at stores. Sure it's faster for the customer BUT it eliminates paying at least 1 job. Think about it, 5 check stands open at the grocery store. Then self-check comes. That's less people in the check stand line. 1 or more check stands shutting down and 1 or more checkers having to find other things to do. Management will look at that and eliminate 1 or more checkers. That's more people out of work. Look what happened when self bagging came in. Stores that use self bagging don't hire baggers. Same with the Apple Store, I'm afraid. I'm all for more people working and less people on the dole.

Ditto. I rarely use self-pay even if all I have are a couple items. I once
was in a line several deep with just a couple items and the checker told me
the self-scanner was open. I told her I'm not the one getting paid to scan
the items. Everyone else in line agreed. If I'm going to get a big discount
for doing it myself, I'll consider it. But if it costs the same, I'll let
the workers continue working.

I'm one of the few that will pay extra for good service, even if there's a discount for self check. I'm wondering how many of those that use self check realize they are taking a job away from someone or if they just don't care. Another thought is how many self check people have jobs and don't want to loose their job. If people thought that way, they may take the time to stand in line and have the person getting paid to check them out.

I've had conversations about this with some of my real liberal friends and they say that companies aren't as cruel as I think and I'm just a conspiracy theorist. My example is my job (no names here). My job is in an industry where people call me and ask questions. My company decided that a lot of the questions could be answered by an automated system. Everyone that answered phones hated the idea but the company went with it anyway. The company said automation will help it's employees do their job more efficiently and be able to take more calls from those customers that have problems with the automated system. As it turned out, the customers that got to a live person were very angry for the automated system, we are handling less calls on a daily basis and the company is offering early retirement and buy-outs at least 2x a year because we don't have the amount of calls that warrants having as many employees as in the passed. My response is that I'm just talking about 1 company. My question then becomes how many other companies are doing the same thing?

Yes, there will always be automation, there will always be people loosing their jobs due to automation but if we, as customers, can avoid things like self-check, maybe 1 or more employees can keep their jobs a bit longer.

Not having self-check doesn't mean they'll keep that "extra" checker on. It
just means longer lines at the few checkouts that are open.

I've even been in a grocery store recently when they had *ONE* line open --
and it wasn't express, either. No self-check options.

Except in the bigger (or at least bigg-ish) suburban stores, I rarely see
FIVE lines open. OTOH maybe I'm just there at the "wrong" time, i.e. not on
weekends/after-work rush hour shopping times.

I'll use self-check if I don't have too many items, don't have something
that I know from experience is going to give me trouble or get the machinery
grousing at me, and don't want to wait behind too many other people with
overflowing carts. (especially if I have ice cream :-))

I don't often see baggers; nor am I shopping in self-bag places. The
cashiers do the bagging. No staffers outside to help load the car anymore,
either, though sometimes the staffer tasked with fetching the carts in from
the lot may stop and help someone.

That's making a couple of very big assumptions: First, that the store will
in fact hire enough cashiers and keep enough registers open to adequately
service the customers who want to use the cashier lanes; and second, that
you can GET any kind of good service in those lanes. At all the grocery
stores in my area, the one or two cashier lanes are lined up six to eight
carts deep even at off times, but they won't open another lane. Also, all
too frequently I see cashiers who must be on some kind of tranquillizers,
who take literally 20 minutes to check out a person with ten items, or stand
there chatting with the customer or another employee. Faced with either of
the above scenarios? Heck YES I will use the self checkout. I do prefer to
deal with a live human being and use a cashier lane, *all things being
equal,* but they rarely are.

Given the way trends are going, I fully expect to see stores start
implementing a service charge for using a live cashier. When that time
comes, I'll stick to self-pay. I don't feel I should have to pay extra for
employees to do their jobs.

The kind of customer service jobs cited in the example are being replaced by
automation, yes, but to an even greater degree by outsourcing. Preserving
the live phone CSR doesn't mean making or keeping jobs for Americans
anymore.

There's really nothing I can say that will change your mind or start a fight. All I can say on the subject, is that it is my belief that automation, in the long run, will replace more and more workers, making it harder and harder to find a job and more and more of our paychecks (for those that are lucky to have a job) will go towards paying the dole. It use to be that we could get mad and say "GET A JOB! but that's not so anymore. There's less and less jobs around.

I can tell you one thing, I have noticed less check stands open on busy times at my local grocery store. I asked why and was told (through gritted teeth) "if you're in a hurry, there's self-check at the right end of the row." I haven't used self-check yet.

There are a few VPN Apps in the app store and the 2 I looked at have good reviews.
They have include a bit of bandwidth to start and the prices for date or time seem
to be reasonable.

Hotspot Shield is still available but the web page with the instructions are no longer
available. This will work on iPhone, iPad and/or iPod Touch.
I did find the instructions with a USER ID and Password that work.

Turn off WiFi. Find the VPN settings in Settings -> General -> Network -> VPN
-> Add VPN Configuration.
Select the IPSec tab/pane
Description: HotspotShield
Server: 68.68.107.101
Account: n5tfrq
Password: n5tfrq
Use Certificate: OFF
Group Name: hss
Secret: hss
Save the settings and hit the "HOME" button to quit. Make sure to turn Wi-Fi back "ON".
To activate Hotspot Shield on your iPhone, the VPN setting needs to be turned on.
Settings –> VPN –> ON

If you entered your info correctly, your status will change to "Connected"
and you'll see a VPN icon appear at the top tray.
You might want to keep an eye on the VPN icon as it does seem to drop out
occasionally.

Apple allows 5 computers per account. Both computers have to be on the same account in order to use the same files downloaded from either the Mac App Store or the App Store. I don't know if both computers need an internet connection to install the apps or not. It's worth a try though.

AT&T Introduces Worldwide VoIP Calling App

Sent to you by Brent via Google Reader: AT&T Introduces Worldwide VoIP
Calling App via MacRumors: Mac News and Rumors - iOS Blog by Jordan
Golson on 11/8/11
AT&T has launched a new app to allow its customers to make inexpensive
international calls over Wi-Fi. With the AT&T Call International app,
customers can get the "lowest international calling rates" that AT&T
offers.

Calls to the UK, for example, cost $0.04/minute for calls to wireline
numbers and $0.27/minute for calls to mobile phones. Calls to China are
$0.04/minute. The price list for all countries is available here.

Pricing is competitive with other VoIP calling apps like Vonage --
though having a major name like AT&T stand behind the app may make some
users more comfortable than making calls with a lesser known name.

Within the United States, calls are placed like a normal cellular call
-- no Wi-Fi required, and a nice feature compared to making calls on
other VoIP apps -- but outside the U.S. all calls are placed only via
Wi-Fi.

The AT&T Call International app is free to download -- call charges are
applied to a credit card, not the user's AT&T phone bill, with no
monthly fee or minimum charges.

Sent to you by Bill Boulware via Google Reader: Apple seeds iOS 5.0.1
early to end users for battery life testing, releases internal memo
about battery issue via 9to5Mac by Mark Gurman on 11/8/11

Following the release of iOS 5.0.1 to developers to test the new
software against applications in addition to test for battery life and
Siri improvements, Apple is now seeding iOS 5.0.1 to certain end users
for testing. A small number of customers who have complained about
battery life issues in iOS 5 have been seeded the bug fix release
through Apple's AppleSeed program.

Apple warns program participants that their devices will not be able to
be downgraded to iOS 5.0, but they will be allowed to upgrade to the
final release of iOS 5 when it comes out in the next few weeks. The iOS
5.0.1 update also brings Siri improvements for Australian users,
multitasking gestures to the first generation iPad, and other bug fixes.

In addition, Apple Stores have received memos of how to deal with
battery life issues. Basically, stores are not to replace phones with
battery life issues and are supposed to tell customers to wait a few
weeks unit Apple releases a software fix. Basically, if your battery is
not working properly: deal with it.
