I missed much of this discussion, so am not sure if this has been answered. The books are stored in /Users/YourUsername/Music/iTunes Music/Books/. But most books you purchase on iTunes use DRM so another person cannot read them on their computer or iDevices. Public domain books may work for you.

I think Calibre is the best cross-filetype book reader, can convert from one type to another and can be used to prepare for iDevices. Great, free, opensource program.

You save your books to calibre and then loads them on your iPad, if you want too. Another way is to download one using Kindle for Mac or B&N nook for Mac, and BAM using their Bluefire reader. All of them are free. They download directly to your iPad. I love calibre so if you want to go that route let me know and I'll give you the quick version of adding books and changing formats. You'll love it once you try it. If you are looking for free books join ENT (Ereader News Today) They have 7 or 8 books a day. Yesterday they started charging for books if you didn't have a kindle. Now you have to pay anywhere from 99 cents to $3.99. www.calibre.com for the program.

The app is Live 365 Radio in the app store. It's a subscription service that I originally connected via my TiVo box.

Not sure I'd refer to Live365 Radio as a subscription app. There are
many stations that require subscriptions (VIP) and possibly cash to
listen but many stations are free and such a great break from the usual
crap programming on the radio today.

For those of you who followed my swollen battery saga, here's what was finally decided:
A second Apple Store also denied me a free replacement battery, and I fully understand their reasoning, now that I've learned a bit about battery life.
AppleCare had ended 2 months earlier; the battery had already been replaced free once, a year ago; it was the way I am using the power supplies on this MacBook. They said that the early battery failures are because I'm running on the power supplies 99% of the time, and I'm only running the battery to zero a couple of times a year. They say these 2 practices destroy batteries quickly. However, the swelling isn't dangerous. When the batteries swell up, it's because they are solidifying, which prevents leakage, or explosions!
A new battery would cost me $100+, so, because the computer is over 3 years old now, and my experience with MacBooks is they have about a 40 months life, I'm going to put that battery money towards a refurb MacBook Air, which I will run on battery most of the time, having learned my lesson. I hope this is helpful to you all.

Ken, does Apple recommend using the battery in a Mac instead of
staying plugged into popper all the time, which I tend to do? If yes,
then I need to change my style of computing, Thanks for the

Yes, very, thank you Ken. I still think the batteries should work
better, reminds me of the mega-expensive shoes by Kurt Geiger which
break so easily and if you take t hem back to the store, they say "Oh,
well, you weren't supposed to *walk* in them!"

I understood for years that the optimum use was to run them on power most of the time, and once a month run them right down and then recharge before use.

This - I believe - used to be the official Apple advice. Has it changed and when????

The technique of completely discharging a battery periodically applies
only to Nickle Cadmium batteries. There is an issue with the structure
of the Ni Cad molecules in that they loose their "memory" after a
while. Completely discharging them "resets" their capacity to hold a
charge and is needed periodically.

Modern laptop batteries are usually Lithium Ion, a whole different
chemical structure. If you discharge a Li Ion battery, all you are
doing is shortening its life by one cycle. Ideally, if you want maximum
life from a Li Ion battery, you should charge it to about 60%, remove it
from the unit, and store it in a cool place.

But in the real world, I find it best to just keep them charged up all
the time. There is a circuit inside each battery to control the current
flow, and when they get fully charged, they just don't accept any more
charge current.

So let's see...my wife's macbook is on power supply almost all the time
and battery maybe 10% of the time. The battery, when we are out of town
or on the road, lasts like it did as a new machine almost 6 years ago.
She's had NO battery issues.
My Windows laptop (7 years old) runs on power supply about the same
amount of time and when on battery power lasts a couple hours (not
nearly as long as her MAC).
I think the "genius" is giving you a line of junk.

Go into System Preferences -> Network and verify that you have a "DNS Server" set. Note that one starting with 198 are local and will not help with remote URLs. If not your ISP will have to give you the settings. DNS = Data Name Server.

Point your preferences to the new location. If iTunes does not ask if you want to move everything (I think it will), then go to File... Library... Organize... and use the Consolidate function to move everything to the new location.

Lion / Bootcamp??

Hi,

I hope someone here might have a definitive answer for me. I have yet to upgrade to Lion. One of the things holding me back is the fear that I might lose my Boot Camp partition.

I am currently running Windows XP service pack 2 on my Boot Camp partition. I only use this to play one particular game (that no longer updates), but I really do not want to lose it.

From what I have read, Windows XP is no longer supported with the version of Boot Camp that comes with Lion. Is it possible to install Lion over Snow Leopard, while leaving the current Boot Camp partition alone so it still works the way it does now?

My game works fine under this version of Windows and I don't know how well it will work with a different / newer version (I know some people had trouble when they upgraded) and I really don't want to have to buy another Windows disk.

Can anyone give me a definitive answer?

Thank you!!

Kim

Anybody using HW under Lion?

When I click with the left mouse button, I get the contextual menu that
normally (and still does) comes up when clicking the right button or
Control-click (left button).

Anybody else have this experience? I'd like to know if this is just an issue
of a Lion-incompatible app, or if there's a fix.

Thanks,

Software Sharing - 2008 Microsoft Office for Mac

We have two Macs at home on a TimeCapsule Wifi system

I bought a 2008 Microsoft for Mac and placed it on both computers thinking that I could run it on both computers. I was wrong, it could only be run on a Laptop and desktop.

I bought a second 2008 microsoft Office, deleted the version from my girlfriend's computer and loaded it on.

We STILL cannot run 2008 Word at the same time. The system thinks that we are running the SAME version of the software.

Anyone have an ideas?

I haven't tried this with Microsoft programs loaded on the Mac but the
Revo Uninstaller removes all traces of any installed program so you will
be able to install the other Office program and run it.
It's free and is the best out there.

I fell in my swimming pool a few years ago with my cell phone in my
pocket. Fortunately I had a brand new shop vac nearby and I turned it
on, opened the phone and put the vacuum hose all over any kind of
opening I could find.
Fortunately, it dried the phone out so quickly and completely that I
turned it on and it worked perfectly.
Just a suggestion
You don't need a shop vac. A regular house vacuum should work
fine...assuming it has a hose.

My wife has upgraded to Lion and in trying to get the iphone, itunes,
and the macbook to sync in the cloud, the portion that requires her to
authorize the songs on her ipod (the iphone), when asked for her
password, she gets the reply that the password is not authorized.
Isn't this supposed to be the same password she uses for everything in
the Mac?

Sounds like the password difficulty is back. I hope they get that fixed. It's been a sim for a lot of people

Your password for your Macintosh user account is not the same as an iTunes or App store password unless you deliberately assigned the identical term for the two different things.
