Spotify CEO Daniel Ek Shows Off Voice Controlled iOS App

Posted: 04 Jan 2012 04:34 PM PST

It looks like Spotify CEO Daniel Ek is a self proclaimed “Siri-holic” after the streaming outfit’s head man waxed lyrical about his love for Apple’s digital assistant.

But that’s not all. During an interview for Forbes, Ek gave a sneak peek at a potential new feature that could be on its way to the Spotify iPhone app at some point in the future. When asked about the possibility of voice activation coming to Spotify, Ek picked up his iPhone and requested a dose of Coldplay.

Naturally the handset obliged, though God only knows why Ek wanted to hear Coldplay at all. Regardless, the news that Spotify is working on voice recognition will come as a late Christmas present for fans of the streaming music service…(...)

Verizon Sees 4.2 Million iPhone Sales For Last Quarter

Posted: 04 Jan 2012 02:22 PM PST

Verizon has reported a record-breaking number of iPhone sold during the fourth quarter of 2011:

Verizon Wireless, the largest U.S. mobile carrier, sold 4.2 million iPhones in the fourth quarter, more than doubling from the third quarter, said Fran Shammo, finance chief of the company's parent.

The iPhone sales will narrow gross margins at the wireless business by 500 to 600 basis points, Shammo, chief financial officer of Verizon Communications, said today at a Citigroup Inc. event in San Francisco. U.S. carriers sell smartphones such as the iPhone to subscribers at a loss to get them to sign up for contracts that typically run for two years.

Comparatively, carrier sold 2 million iPhones during the previous quarter.

Apple Hires Adobe Executive to Run iAds

Posted: 04 Jan 2012 12:39 PM PST

Apple reportedly hired Adobe executive Todd Teresi to run the iAds business unit, which had been ran by Eddie Cue since August, when Andy Miller stepped down to join a VC firm:

Apple has poached Adobe executive Todd Teresi to run its iAds program, Adam Satariano at Bloomberg reports.

According to LinkedIn, Teresi is a VP and GM of Media Solutions at Adobe. Prior to that he was Chief Revenue Officer at Quantcast. (Before that, he was SVP at Yahoo.)

We wish him good luck. Given the moderate success of iAds, he’ll certainly need it.

iOS 5 Glitch Exposes Photo Albums on Locked iPhones

Posted: 04 Jan 2012 12:24 PM PST

Canadian tech consultant Ade Barkah has uncovered a security bug in iOS 5 that allows for someone to bypass an iPhone’s lock screen and view the device’s photo albums, even without knowing the passcode.

In iOS 5, there is a convenient button on the lock screen, which appears by double-tapping the home button, that allows for you to launch the camera application. Normally, Apple has a restriction that prohibits you from viewing any images on your iPhone’s camera roll while the device is locked, however, during his travels from Canada to Argentina, Barkah discovered that Apple's restriction is merely based on the iPhone’s system time…(...)
