To amplify Randy's recommendation to backup your storage media: Backup your backups.
July 2010, my external HDD failed.  The iMac's HDD failed 5 days later and I lost everything.
10 months later the replacement HDD failed (same manufacturer, I no longer use).
I now have an external, hot swappable HDD base with three HDDs that I change on a weekly rotation.

That's a good idea. I also had 2 hard drive failures in less than a month once. Same model, Apple.
My old external hard drive backup is 5 or 6 years old and keeps on cranking away. I back up about once a month, which is fine for what I do on the computer. WIth that amount of use, is that external HD reaching its life expectancy?

Could you tell a little about this...what HDs, what base, etc?

Howdy.

I have no first-hand information, however....

Think about the rate of evolution in SSD technology and supporting firmware, and note that the article was *published* just over a year ago, and the data for it was accumulated probably 18 months ago.

I think SSDs may appear to function just like a HD but the technology is very different.

I don't think people or even very tech savvy people are equal, yet, to understanding SSD and the differences with HD tech.

I assumed SSD, with no moving parts, would be naturally more reliable than HD but I'm beginning to think I shouldn't have made that assumption!

Installing Windows and Fusion

Posted by: "harpangel36" harpangel36@yahoo.com   harpangel36

I have a new MBP and have installed Fusion and have a couple questions before installing my Windows 7 Home premium. I only use windows for a couple of embroidery programs not available to me on the Mac. I don't need a lot of hard disk space as I really don't intend to use Windows for anything else. How can I manually allocate hard disk space in Fusion? (It seems to want to give me only 40GB of which I don't need that much). Should I choose 32 bit or 64 bit windows? Anything else I should know before installing?

Thanks, Roxanne

syncing subtitle files for movies

Posted by: "Tim O'Donoghue" tjod@drizzle.net   timodonoghue

Hi all;

I'm looking for suggestions for Mac software to run on either my 2011 Mac Mini or 2010 Macbook Pro, both running OS 10.7.2

Many movies from Netflix - both instant and DVD versions - have subtitles. I need software that will allow me to reliably sync various subtitle files (.SRT and others) that I can find on the interwebs with the actual movie - which can be direct from the DVD or a ripped version using RipIt (for DVDs that I own)

The problem is that many of the subtitle files do not take into account all the extra leaders, FBI, Interpol, and other warnings, previews, etc., and the dialogue is off by many seconds or even minutes. The software will need to allow me to specify at least two points where known dialog is taking place and be able to sync with the movie using the adjusted timings.

I've tried one called Subfix, but the files it generates don't show any dialog on the screen at all - even thought the original file showed dialog, but in the wrong places.

I'm hoping someone can suggest an app that's known to work, preferably from experience using the app. There are several listed on the Mac App store, but the reviews are enough to warn me off paying even a small price for them.

Thanks,

Tim

You might have a look at a piece of software called iSubtitle. Also if you
use VLC to watch the movies you can use the keyboard to advance or retard
the subtitles to get them into synch throughout the movie.

Magenta cast

27" iMac Quad i7 (mid-2010)
Canon i9900
D/Led most recent Canon drivers from Apple.
PS CS5

I am getting a Magenta cast since I got my iMac and upgraded to Lion.
however, switching to another drive (SL) didn't help.

I've read a lot of discussion groups. They weren't able to figure it out either.
Reading several books, including Scott Kelby.

When I print from Aperture 3, there is a slight improvement.

any suggestions, or solutions!!! would be appreciated

thanks, and Happy New Year.
