How can I open a zipped file with a password?

Posted by: "Jann Grimes" jannsmailinglists@yahoo.com   jannsmailinglists

Sun Nov 6, 2011 4:39 am (PST)

I download a lot of files from a web page that I like a lot. The problem is the owner makes up her zip files with a password. She gives the password, so that is not the problem. When I try to unzip them it goes through the process then says - "Unable to open "file name" to "downloads" (Error 1 Operation Not Permitted)". On my PC unarchiving the file, it asks for the password and it opens it. My MAC never asks for the password.

Since I use my MAC 99% of the time I have to save the files adding the password to the file(s) name so I know it, it is not always the same password, transfer them to a flash drive, walk upstairs, start up my PC desktop, put it on my PC and then open it, put it back onto a flash drive to put it back on my MAC so I can use it . Needless to say this is annoying and time consuming.

Thank you for the time and help.

Jann

Howdy.

If you are "unzipping" with the built in Mac utility (Decompress and
Uncompress under File menu), then you will need to key in a password if
required.

However, there are a number of other zip/unzip utilities that will ask
for a password when required and which will pop up a password dialog.

There are other utilities that go through the entire processes and seem
like they are decompressing but at the last minute do a message saying
a password is needed.

Stuffit's free Stuffit Expander will ask for a password but this
utility has changed in the most recent commercial version of Stuffit
Deluxe. I have the most recent version of Stuffit Deluxe on my Mac OS
X Lion system and I don't think it is doing well with Lion and there
are no signs that the Stuffit people are very concerned about this.

Why not try some other free or shareware decompression utilities to see
what you think?

- AJoiner
- Split & Concat
- UnRarX

Split & Concat may not do well with passwords always but often works
very well for other purposes such as splitting large files into smaller
segments or rejoining them.

I've tried UnRarX recently and rather like it but the password part is
a bit unobvious with only a small term "password" at top of window.
You click this first, key in the password, then proceed.

Help! can someone please tell me how to use grab for my screen shots. I
have brought up the app , as well as using the short cut command Z (from
pogue). I want to send a screen shot to a friend of his web page.

Thanks,

Have you considered just using one of the system shortcuts to get a screen shot, either of a selected area or the entire screen?

shift-command 3 (entire screen), or shift-command 4 (selected area)

Howdy.

Two ways to do screen captures. If you find and download a different
app then there are also other ways. But below is what comes standard
on Mac.

1. Finder built in.
Press Shift command 3 (the 3 on top row). This creates a PNG file by
default.
There are several other keyboard Finder commands for making a capture
of a menu, a timed screen, etc., you can find these keyboard commands
in the Help menu.
Remember, you need to have Finder active.

2. Grab.
This is a separate application. It's very easy.
Launch Grab.
There will be a menu for Grab.
Use the Capture menu and pick the type of screen capture:
-Selection
-Window
-Screen
-Timed screen

The timed screen means that you set things up as you want to see then
select Timed screen and it does a count down of 10 seconds which lets
you be sure that the item to be captured will be the active item, or
the cursor pointer is in the right spot, etc.

For a Selection, just choose "Selection" command and then you drag a
"marque" around the item you want captured. "Marque" is an old old
Macintosh term going back to 1984 that means to use the cursor/pointer
to drag a "box" around something. For example, if you drag a marque
around 4 or 5 icons on the Desktop they are all selected.

Grab will make the capture and you then have to save it.

By default, Grab sames in, IIRC, TIFF file format. However, there are
ways to change the file format for both Grab and the Finder built in
capture commands. OnyX can change file format and probably TinkerTool
as well and also other utilities and Terminal commands.

Thanks, Henry, and Dan,
It was driving me crazy, as I wanted to help my friend by sending him how
his web page looked on my computer. I found out how to do grab, and I did
Henry's short cut, and they both worked..but so did a wonderful addon from
Firefox, but I think that would only work for on line grabs.

Sometimes , it is just much easier to send someone a screen shot than to
try to describe a process or a problem. You know what they say about a
picture being worth a thousand words.

Thanks again to you both,

Jeannie

I'm still puzzled by some inconsistencies.
At the Genius Bar yesterday, the (quite knowledgeable, as best I could
tell) Genius told me not to do that, because there was stuff in the
System and Library that's machine-specific, so that a clone SL 10.6.8
boot volume from a Core 2 Duo MB Pro might not be able to run a Quad
Core i7 MB Pro. HOWEVER, my 10.6.8 external FW boot drive was created
from my retail SL install disk running on my Core 2 Duo machine (mid
2009, 2.8 Ghz), and it's able to boot the new quad core i7 machine into
SL (I don't know if Software Update is smart enough to configure
external drives to have "universal boot" capability, but that's one
possibility).
The Genius told me the Apple Store could neither sell me nor give me a
SL Install DVD for my new early 2011 refurb that arrived with Lion
installed and no SL install DVD. He did suggest I might be able to
obtain one from Apple. He also installed SL on my empty partition for
me. I've subsequently used Setup Assistant to transfer my "stuff" from
the old MB Pro. One surprise (again, machine-specific stuff): I needed
to reinstall VMware fusion.

Yeh me too. I'm puzzled about Apple's attitude. Perhaps with Jobs dead things will change. They could easily provide and installer, for $$ if they wished, to allow SL on new machines.

I can now run SL on Fusion, but on he MBP it is too crash prone. I am considering sending it back.

Bill, I'm sorry, but could you please repeat what method you used to get SL running on Fusion? I've seen SO many suggestions that I have lost track of them. Do you mean SL Server, or plain SL? And HOW did you finally do it?

Interesting related item. I put a Tiger install disc in my drive today. It didn't even show up under the preferences/startup disc. It was mounted, but the icons that showed up had the stop symbol through them.

My guess is that your machine, due to its later vintage, cannot boot
10.4 Tiger. It mounts because it is "a volume," just as any DVD will
mount, whether it has a system on it or not.

Oh yes, I know it's too new, but I tried it as an exercise. I had a Tiger disk from when I purchased the system for one of my older machines, years ago. I have not gone back any further.

My current iMac, 11,1, came with 10.6.4. If I go a step before that, it won't boot.

Plenty of space, but "file too big to copy": will iDefrag help?

Posted by: "jamesrob@sonic.net" jamesrob@sonic.net   jamesrob328i

Another bump in the road configuring my new MB Pro i7 Quad Core:

After bringing in all my "stuff" from the Core 2 Duo machine, one program that doesn't run correctly is Fusion 4.0.2. Their knowledge base addresses this and says the program always need to be reinstalled when moved to a different Mac.

So, I've done that. My VM was "suspended" (not shut down) when I used Setup Assistant, and VMware says that the VM should be shut down in the guest OS in order to make the VM run on a different machine, so I went back to the old machine, launched Fusion, shut down Win 7, quit from Fusion, then tried to copy the VM file from old to new Mac. The file is about 69 GBytes (the vm includes the "virtual" hard drive, of course), and there's about 170 GB free on the Lion boot partition on my new MB Pro. When I try to copy the file from one machine to the other in the Finder, a small dialog pops up saying "Preparing to Copy <filename>...", replaced after about 2 minutes of spinning pizza wheel with another dialog saying "Cannot Copy: not enough free space."

This is a brand new install of the Mac OS. I wondered if perhaps I already had fragmentation (I have no idea if Fusion "demands" that the virtual HD be contiguous), so I've purchased, downloaded, and am now running iDefrag. It's found one lonely block in the middle of my otherwise free space. Could that torpedo the whole thing? (I'm not sure what this one block is; I need to read the iDefrag documentation in more depth).

Anyone have ideas?

Thanks so much,

6b.

Use iDefrag to defragment the free space. Simpler and faster than defragmenting the whole drive.

Re: Plenty of space, but "file too big to copy": will iDefrag help?

Howdy.

Can't help with VM and Windows. Not my area of expertise.

However, if you have a VM partition on a HD with a Mac partition and if
the entire drive has only 170 GB of free space, then you are trying to
copy a 69 GB file from and to the same hard drive, so to speak, this
might be overflowing the bucket of available resources.

After all, you have to have the 69 GB file on one partition and then
you are adding a new 69 GB file to the other partition and that totals
140 GB approximately.

Fragmentation isn't the issue here although it might slow things down.

About the only thing I could suggest is to shut down the Mac and then
boot from scratch. Then attempt the file copy WITHOUT booting up
Windows and without launching any application on the Mac side. Might
free up enough resources to let the copy happen. No guarantees.

I have Mac Pro with a 2.8GHz Xeon Nehalem processor (2006). Does anyone know if 64 bit windows 7 will run on this machine under Boot Camp?

Are you sure it's a 2006? Nehalem wasn't released until 2008...

The MacPro3,1 (early 2008) included a 2.8GHz processor, based on Xeon
5400 series "Harperstown"
The MacPro5,1 (mid 2010) included a 2.8GHz Nehalem processor

That being said, I think you could make 64-bit Windows 7 work fine in
Boot Camp.

modem/router question with Magic Jack

Posted by: "Louise Stewart" veggie236@earthlink.net   pudgybulldog

I have a G-4. I want to try out Magic Jack Plus since it can be used
without plugging into the computer. For a Mac user, the computer must
be Intel to use Magic Jack and mine isn't. So, I ordered Magic Jack
Plus and started hooking it up. BUT it seems that my modem has one
Ethernet slot and I'd need two so the MJP can be plugged in, or else
I'd have to switch back and forth between having a phone or having
the Internet on my computer.

My modem says: RCA by Thomson, Digital Broadband, Model DHG-535-2. On
the back, there's a place where the computer plugs in, then two
telephone slots, one Ethernet slot, a USB slot and the slot for the
cable cord. This modem came from Comcast when I subscribed about 3-5
yrs ago.

I called Magic Jack and was told I needed a modem with two Ethernet
slots. I told them they should say that in their advertising.

So I went to Fry's Electronics yesterday. A salesman who seemed very
informed said modems don't come with two Ethernet slots, that I'd
need to buy two things he showed me: Motorola Cable Modem PLU 6726555
for $99.99 and a Netgear N300 Router PLU 6069588 for $69.99. He said
installation is a bit complicated and they can come do it for $99.99.
If all this is needed, that doesn't make Magic Jack such a good deal.
Plus, it's here on a 30-day trial to see how I like it. I already
don't like it if I have to spend all this money to know if I like it.

I plan to get a Mac MIni but other things are taking precedent right
now. The Fry's guy also said my current RCA box (installed by
Comcast) won't work when I get the Mini Mac, that I'd need these
newer contraptions.

Then, it occurred to me today that since I have a modem, why would
the Fry's guy say I need this new one? Couldn't I just get a router
and get that hooked up to my current modem? I have noooooo idea about
ANY of this, being a total non-technical sort.

Can anyone give me info on what I need to do?

Louise

Howdy.

I'm not sure I can be any help here. I tried to find tech info on the
RCA Digital Broadband device you mention but can only find it for sale
used on eBay and a few other places.

If the RCA cable modem device is like similar devices, then the Fry Guy
may have not known what he was talking about. He may also have been
trying to talk you into doing some upgrades. I have no idea.

Call ComCast and ask if they can change out your cable modem to
something more up to date with several Ethernet ports. (I have a
"cable modem" router provided by Verizon for coax cable/FiOS fiber
optic, and Internet and it includes WiFi AND 4 Ethernet ports.)

Normally, when a "cable modem" has an Ethernet port you can get a low
cost Ethernet switch with 4 ports and run an Ethernet cable from the
router/RCA device to the Ethernet switch. This arrangement the
provides 4 Ethernet ports.

If you need more than 4 ports, you can get 5 port, 8 port, 12 port, 16
port, and 24 port Ethernet Switches.

Any device plugged into an Ethernet port on the Ethernet Switch
(computer, Magic Jack) will then have access to the Internet and 4 of
them can be plugged in at the same time.

To make all this work and to be sure you can have things move data at
the fastest possible speed you need to match some speed ratings up on
each device.

1. Get an Ethernet Switch rated for the current fast speed called
Gigabit Ethernet (sometimes seen as 1000BaseT).

2. The Ethernet cables need to also be rated/designed for this faster
speed. Look for cables that are rated as Cat 5e or Cat 6. "Cat" just
means Category. 5e is fine and 6 is for long distances. You might see
cables rated at Cat 3, Cat 3e, and Cat 5 so avoid them.

3. Don't get an Ethernet Hub should you come across one. Get the
thing called a "Switch."
