I did an erase and install of Lion yesterday for the first time since upgrading. I"ve had strange problems since going up to Lion. After the erase and install, and hand installing all of my 3rd party apps, strange things happened. Spotlight wouldn't stop indexing. I kept an eye on the process mdworker, and it consistently did nothing. That should be using 60-80% of one core while indexing is going on. The indexing would get to an estimated 4 hours left, next time I looked, it had jumped back to 10 hours, along with the status bar.
I had SIMBL failures all day, and mdworker errors, both of which prompted me to create another user account and move to that. It did not fix the indexing problem. I was going to archive and install, but held off. I ran DiskWarrior, along with a permission repair, and indexing seems normal again. mdworker is bumping up to 75% like it should. I should add that the initial repair permissions took 5 hours. Nothing else was going on.
A senior person at Apple just brushed it off and said 'do an erase and install again'. I wouldn't settle for that, neither would the initial contact person I had. He went to another senior person. He called me back and listened to my ideas. He agreed with the Diskwarrior/repair permission thing. He gave me his direct number and told me to let him know how I made out. Just got off the phone with him and told him it looked good at this point. Things seem OK. He asked me to call him back tomorrow. I will. Darned, the Canadian support group is great! I've always had good luck with them!
I am tempted to move back to 10.6 for awhile. Things don't seem too tight or stable with 10.7.2 at this point.

I turned off Spotlight from the terminal and also excluded the Lion and SL partitions in Spotlight System Preferences. After a few minutes, the HD finally quit making noise but on Activity Monitor I see the Writes at jumping around 11 Mbs and Reads generally at a low level or 0. It has been 5 minutes and still getting 11Mbs writes.

Thanks, Harry, you are one of the several great people on this list with
super advice (you know who you are).
BTW, I looked at Activity Monitor, once it finally came up when the HD was
chattering, and I didn't have any process over 7%.
I read on a newsgroup that Lion adaptation was really lagging, only about
16%. Of course, that might make sense if it was 16% of ALL Macs.
I must admit, with the reported trouble that Apple is having with iOS and
Lion, my dissatisfaction index is growing. I gave my 4S to my daughter and
she says it only last maybe four hours. She upgraded to latest version
(5.0.1 I think she said) yesterday via OTA, and she said it was down to 50%
after only two hours of virtually no use. She said it was better before
the update.
Thanks also Harry for the procedure on how to get SL on my new MBA. A
little more "involved" than it should be. I haven't tried it yet.

Forgot to mention, I did a repair permissions last night. And, it
found a ton of stuff - why is that? Don't know how long the first one
ran, but I think a long time. I started it a second time and
cancelled it after 2 hours since I needed the computer and did not
want to mess with my Win computer. That was probably a dumb move.

First of all, you're quite welcome Bob!
Yes, permission repair on the last couple of iterations of the operating system seem to find many things. 10.6 started with the ACL messages, if i've got the terminology right. It seems so long since then.
It just seems that system things are prone to causing error messages in any permission repair utility. Maybe these should be rewritten to ignore bogus messages.
I am definitely going to use some of my free disk space for Snow Leopard. I may find myself over on that system more than 10.7. I don't use most of the 'new features' of Lion anyway.
Things seem to be back on track here with my new install, well, new as of last night. I've got indexing going on as usual, with now 3 mdworker processes up and an mdworker32 going as well. That is new to me as far as the indexing process goes. When the process was crapping out on me, I only had one process going on.
Errr..frustrating.
After I'm sure I'm stable, I'll create a partition in some free space on my internal and reinstall 10.6.
Good luck. Let me know how you make out.

Return that phone at once. My 4S was getting about 8 hours before the update, up to 10 hours after it. And that is with wi-fi (among other things) running the whole time.

Robert, are you saying that you have 1 TB internal disk in your MacBook Pro? That would mean that you have removed the original probably 500 GB internal disk. Could you please confirm this?
I bought this MBP with 500 GB last year (<http://support.apple.com/ >)kb/SP581
and I would like to replace the 500 GB with a 1 TB disk. A contact person from Apple told me last week that the maximal storage this model can handle is 500 GB, the controller might not be able to support more. "Apple does not recommend more but it *might* work", he said, which I found a rather unsatisfactory answer.
What type is your internal disk exactly? How long time have you been using it and did you notice any problems with the controller? Any disk-relating irregularities?

This MBP originally came with a 250 GB drive. I upgraded first to 500
GB (Seagate from Best Buy several years ago, that drive is in a
hackintosh netbook now) and then this 1 TB (from OWC) which I have had
for over six months. Love it, no problems at all, except I am filling
it up quickly. I am certainly not an expert on Apple, but I don't
know why there would be a problem. I have another MBP with a 1 TB
spinning drive and a 256 GB SSD with no problems (SSD replaced the DVD
drive with an Optibay and SSD).

Patti,
Your "They" is the spammer claiming "they" found your post on Craig's List or that they are the creator of Craig's List. They aren't. Nor are the pornographic spam from Craig's list, or other services.
Those spam come from someone who joined apple-iphone to gather email addresses. I'm not saying that they
harvested e-ddresses in mass. It could have been just someone that lurked, and copied down the e-dresses of those that posted while the spammer was a list member. Low tech, but that would explain why only a number of the members getting targeted.
Short of total and constant moderation, which I am not suggesting, there is not way to totally stop spammers.

I found this comment on the Yahoo "Widget" website below the photo and description of the Yahoo Stock Ticker.
I have no idea whether this comment is accurate or not but it could explain the issue we and others are having.
By the way, the same thing happened to me with respect to the stock Mac "weather widget." It just went totally blank.
So I downloaded the Wunderground weather widget and it appears to be functional and acceptable. (Scroll to the end please)

Yahoo! Finance's API has stopped supporting all symbols that are not NYSE or NASDAQ symbols - that's why the widget doesn't update them. That's not only ^DJI - a huge number of symbols are no longer supported; e.g., ^HUI, symbols on foreign exchanges, etc.
Sadly,. this has made this widget pretty much useless. A pity; I rather liked it. Perhaps somebody could write a version that uses the Google financial API?

Re: Great Response from Genius Bar

Hi all,
Went to the Genius bar and they confirmed that it was dead - most
likely the graphics chip burned out and that since it was water damage
they wouldn't cover it. He also said they don't repair water damage
but just replace the unit. However they did offer to sell me a
replacement for $299 which I told them I couldn't afford right now.
( I was planning on taking it a shop called UbreakIfix which was right
next to the Apple Store in Chicago and which had good Yelp reviews to
see if they might fix.) However he (Aldo the Genius) asked me to
wait for a second and went and talked to his manager. He came back
and said they were willing to give me a 50% discount to make the total
$150. It was a pretty nice offer - not sure why they did - maybe my
profile said I was a Veteran or I have been an Apple user since late
80's. Whatever it was a relief that they did as I was hoping they
could repair for around a $100.
Back in operation now.

Where?

On a technical note, I am seeing this thread as multiple threads in Apple Mail. This is basically the only one I've seen like this in awhile.
Are people posting to multiple threads on the web site?
There should only be one thread that is being replied to, and I don't know if Apple Mail is screwing up or it's the way the thread is being handled?
